I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
I think one of the most beneficial things for everyday enthusiast anglers from RUclips channels like yours, is that you, the pros, are always learning in real-time just like everyone else. I feel like every body of water has a learning curve specific to it, that is different than every other body of water, even one that may be a few miles away. That is inspiring in and of itself. Always enjoys your vids.
Thanks! I’m always trying to get better!
Winter gloves with flip flops. What a combination. 😂 By the way, I agree with you that the more I fish with,it the more I am starting to favor the flat worm. The glide is awesome.
its a winner!
Hey Doug I think it's small size and it's flat bottom make it glide so nice. I'm waiting for my line in the mail. I'll start throwing it here in Missouri. Hey have great fishing season this year and God bless you and your family.
how you Fish it, ITS No more a Hover Rig ....but anyways, IT is working good
I've caught a lot of bass on that bait. My hover rigs arrived a couple days ago, so can't wait to try them out together!
good luck!
Not because of the Jig Head, but it's because of your New Custom Jig Head!!!!!!!! It's one of a kind and it's like no other. You should be proud of this design, very innovated!
Thank you!
Thanks for your help 1st off but I've never caught a spotted bass anywhere but creeks and river areas. I find that small mouth or large mouth is the way to go but hey I'm a self taught catfish but crappy and walleye trained kinda guy but I have landed some trophy Worthy large mouth mainly from ponds but a lake or 2 also. Thanks for your help bro. You know your stuff
Thanks for watching
I received my hover rigs a few days ago so have been experimenting with them quite a bit this week with pretty good success. Yesterday I tried it with a Jenko Tremor Shad, which is similar to the Shad Impact you're using. I was amazed with how much darting and fluttering I get with it -- works great. Unfortunately I ran into a bay with gar in it and lost a couple of the jigs to those sharp teeth....
dang gar are good at that
🍺I’ve been informed that Berkleys Cull Shad will be available late June. It’s very durable, even if a Pike alters the “Honey comb” design that Berkley owns (patent) it runs true, with wobble and secondary head action, it will not blow out and has an amazing internal hook keeper snap as well as 2 pre drilled holes to take nail weights. Popular bait fish colors in 6” and 8”. The 6” weighs 1 ounce and the 8” weighs 2.9 ounces. 🤠
I cant wait to get my hands on them!
Great video, as always.
Going to try this at Chickahominy Reservoir.
Looks like a nice, subtle presentation with that enticing straight tail movement.
Thanks!
My hover rigs came in!!! Thank God I can put the Ned rig away! These things are amazing!! First cast caught a fish. Seemed very effective - 6 Fish in 50 minutes from the bank on a cloudy and very windy day. Casted it and let it fall to bottom, pulled it up & let it fall again… repeat. Simple. Missed 3 because I was a bit too excited when they hit it😂
Right on!
Hey Matt, I really appreciate your help with all your videos. Your secrets and tips are greatly appreciated. I just started watching your videos and you have a lot good idea and techniques. I fish Illinois ponds I plan on catching my biggest bass this spring. Your tips should help me do that. Thank you. Good luck this spring season.
thanks for the support!
Received my hover rigs yesterday. Looking forward to trying them out once the conditions improve (last weeks rains has the river around here high and muddy!!). Really enjoying the channel Matt!!
good luck!
Got my hover rig rigged up. Can’t wait to hit Lanier. thanks Matt!
Have fun!
I believe the hover rig will be great on Lanier.
Looks like a bunch of fun, I cant wait to get out and try my hover rigs that I got from you so really excited!!!
Good luck!
Just waiting on the weather to try! Rain, snow and wind are keeping me in. 50mph winds forecast again tomorrow. The smallies are thumb'n there nose at me. Grrrrrr!
50 mph holy cow!
The Shad Impact is also incredible weedless hooked, fished weightless! It's simple and super effective!
Thanks for the tip!
Thanks for the on the water video. Good to see how you fish it and where you fish it. I've had my hover rigs for awhile yet but can't get on the water
Good luck!
I just ordered some of these. I cannot wait for my hover rigs to ship. I am ready to get these things out on the water
Awesome!
My name is Bob King, ha, not Amy King, my wife as the poster. Keep playing with this bait, dialing it in. You have a winner, for sure. I made the wedge tail and others, so have a bit of experience with soft plastic designs, many I have not shown. I love to see people thinking out of the box.
awesome!
Great alternate to a fluke which we throw a lot here at Toledo Bend ... now this hover is killing them here w/ the shad & bass spawn on .. even used a Ringo worm too .... my go too probably into the fall ... bet schoolers will fight each other for this and jerkbait too ... keepup great work Matt ... Capt. Kirk
Yes love hearing this!
Can't wait to try mine out on Saturday
nice!
ordered some of the hoover rig hooks 2 weeks ago and they still havnt showed up, winter is almost gone here in Michigan and looking forward to trying them
they will be shipping in the next couple days if you havent gotten them yet
I can't wait to try those hooks with the deps bullflat
Give it a try!
@Matt Stefan Fishing I hope to this weekend. I'll be sure to let you know the result. I bet it'll do good. I've had good luck with that bait on a light wire owner j hook with a 1/16 oz or 3/32 oz nail weight.
Going to try it on the caffine shad soon, hope it goes well.
good luck!
Nice rig I’m going to enjoy this for I would us a marabou along with it ,an have a great time throwing what works for me .
Right on!
That really looks wonderful
thanks!
I have my first tied on with a fluke ready to go. Tried to use it last weekend but woke up to 18" of snow.
they are calling for more snow here tonight....come on spring!
@@MattStefanFishing I'd love to see a video on what your strategy is for locating structure when on a new lake. Take Lanier for example, we hammer spots once on a brush pile that are 20' plus deep, which are hard to blindly find. Is it near impossible to find by just side scanning on practice days? Or do pros buy waypoints too?
Received my hover rigs last week and finally got out here in Michigan, and caught a 3 lber to start the season off! Thanks.
Nice!!
good stuff.👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks 👍
I only get more broke each video, but hey they catch fish 😂. Love the content keep it up!
More to come!
I can’t wait until international shipping starts up. I am going to fish the hell out of that thing. 😂
working on it!
@@MattStefanFishing I showed my nephew this and he lost his shit. He wants to try them bad. Hahaha
Super excited about it! Wanting to do an underwater video of different baits soon! Mid 40s water temp with 1-2 ft of visibility, what bait would you suggest I throw with them? I bought both sizes
i like flat sided baits for the 1/8 oz like beavers, crash craw, or bull flat and for the 3/64 almost anything works. Flat worm, shad impact, flukes, senkos, you name it and it works.
@@MattStefanFishing awesome, thanks so much!
What size jig head are you using on the 4"? I see there is a 1/0 and 3/0 hook option.
1/0 that weights 3/64 oz
I got some of these hover rigs to try out but I was curious about how you handle toothy critters like pike when it comes to finesse rigs like this?
haha not much you can do
Hey i know you build your own rods.( i do also thanks to you😅) what guides do you put on your spinning rods. My issue is getting the fg knot thru the eyes smooth. Its almost like the braid is faster than the florocarbon. Thanks for your videos. Please keep them coming!
i use the CRB LZR guides or fuji alconites
Thanks . That's what I use also.
Are they going to make heavier sizes for when fish are deeper in the winter?
yep
That'll work great up north. Will you be making an announcement when international shipping becomes an option. Good luck this wk!
yep!
what is the deepest u can comfortably fish hover rigs?
I fish them 20+ ft a lot of wind conditions allow
What braid to flouro line sizes are you using for that presentation , is that a medium action rod. Sorry if you covered this on the video I missed it if you did. thank you and good luck at the next derby!
I use a 7'3" ML fast action rod with 6-10 lb fluorocarbon leader to a 10 lb braid mainline
Always cool to see you HRing-it! What gloves are you using?
its the new fingerless striker gloves and they are amazing! here is the link! strikerbrands.com/collections/new-products/products/striker%C2%AE-wool-glove
Is it possible to improvise one of those with just a regular jig hook and a nail weight 🤔
you can try
What weight hover jig works best with the 4" tail ?
I like the 3/64 oz
Love it!! 🔥🎣💪🏻
Just ordered!!
awesome!
Does it work better rigged upside down like the thumbnail
its not upside down...thats just how it appears in the thumbnail
The core Tackle link is broken, just a heads up! Thanks for the content!
should be fixed now. thanks for pointing it out
Looks better than a gamakatsu darter head and gulp minnow
it is better!
Matt, I got to have those gloves!
Here is the link! They are amazing! strikerbrands.com/collections/new-products/products/striker%C2%AE-wool-glove
@@MattStefanFishing Thank you! 😁
Shipping negated by military discount!
What braid to leader knot do you use? I've had bad luck with my bait casting equipment and breaking right below my knot.
i use a uni to uni knot
Nice. Matt what line are you using? Got 8 packs going out Sunday Good luck!
I was using 8 lb berkley 100% fluorocarbon leader to 10 lb Berkley x9 braid mainline
Nice bro , I like it
Thanks 🔥
Great technique! I like those gloves. Where do you get those, Matt?
The gloves are Striker
here is the link! they are awesome! strikerbrands.com/collections/new-products/products/striker%C2%AE-wool-glove
Excited to throw my hovers out tomorrow. Ice finally melted enough in my neck of the woods. Gonna try several different baits. Been having a little issue getting it to sit right using elaztech baits.
Is there any variants coming in future? Looking for similar but even more weedless, maybe even close to a Texas but with that 90 degree and internal weight.
stay tuned!
@@MattStefanFishing LOL- that almost gave me chills. Excited to see!!!
How would you fish this in current?
id let the current roll it into eddies
Have to run . ✅21
thanks!
How long of fluorocarbon leader are you using to throw the hover rig?
i have a 10 ft leader
How do.u Remove hook from the fish mouth like u did?
i just popped it out with my finger
What size line you throwin? 6 or 8?
this was 8 lb 100% berkley fluorocarbon
What size jig?
this was the 3/64 oz Core Tackle hover rig
@@MattStefanFishing thanks
How about a z-man trick shotz one bait would last all day
it works good on it!
Suggested rod and line weight? What weight was the jig head?
this was the 3/64 oz hover rig. i was fishing it on a 7'3" ML fast action spinning rod and 8 lb fluorocarbon leader to 10 lb braid mainline
@Matt Stefan Fishing thank you very much! I'll be trying this on the Spotted bass out here in California now that the sun is actually out. Would nail weights in the nose accomplish the same thing as the jighead?
@@justcallmedyno8938 yes it would but he made this rig to solve the issue of using and possibly losing nail weights and going through a ton of tackle
Well there goes another 25.00 bucks. Good luck. Tackle Warehouse is like tackle junkie addition. Lol
haha!
What rod blank are you using?
MHX NSJ-871
Ok thanks
My bait does a circle
Thanks for sharing
Didn't know you could get them without the weed guard.....
He cuts it off with side cutters/ pliers.
@joshuajadolon3591 ... just got to that part of the video... but thank you...
i just snip them off.
What size hook are you using?
this video was the 3/64 oz 1/0 hook
Ok thanks
Thumbs Up ! 👍
Thank you 👍
👍👍👍
thanks for watching!
👍👍👍👍👍
thanks for watching!
This set up is dangerous I can say from experience!
its a lot of fun!
I only have 2 hover rig jigs left out of the 3 packs I started with, lol. I've caught tons of fish on them, but because of how I fish deep back under brush and in the slop, I've lost some. I will definitely order more! I think you caught lightning in a bottle with that one.
Man the feedback has been great! we are working on a heavier flipping version to hopefully solve your issues
@@MattStefanFishing I know they weren't designed for shallow water, heavily vegetated fisheries. But they catch so many fish it's hard not to use them!
I had an idea that if you went beyond 90 degrees with the line tie to almost 120 or so that it would still have the same gliding and swirling action but the vegetation would have and easier time sliding past the line tie. Then again, that might be a terrible idea, lol. It was just a thought I had.
I was already thinking how I'd love a 5/0 I could use for magnum flukes and larger presentations. Glad to hear this news!
What is your tackle warehouse referral code?
here you go www.tacklewarehouse.com/?from=MSFG
Have you tried it with the Champ Minnow?
not yet
I have to say the hover rig is a phenomenal jighead. I’m not too surprised it can be fished like a lipless because with a flatter bodied plastic it can wiggle the right way. I have been using the staple stuff like flukes, creatures, flatworms,Ect. But my two favorites right now are zoom finesse worms and zoom little critter craw or the maxscent super trooper. If you use a zoom plastic I recommend trying to fatigue the plastic some by stretching and twisting the bait to soften the bait and break up the salt. The critter craw gives a nice subtle glide but mimics craws perfectly. The super trooper is super versatile because you can jig it or swim it back and still get action. I still think a zoom finesse or mag finesse worm is awesome because they spiral really well and they fit the bait very well too.
Great info! thanks for sharing!
I do this with 6th sense juggle
interesting
Great video buddy
thanks!
Waiting for my hover rigs in the mail. I’m looking forward to trying the Jackall ishad 3.8 on them.
yours will be shipping monday or tuesday!
2:16 Hank Hill
haha
What state you in?
this video was at clarks hill lake on SC/GA border
Kool am in south Jersey
That's the exact bait I had in mind. Got my hooks today!
Nice!
🍺👍.
thanks!
Hey Matt. Love the content thanks for sharing your knowledge, I have a question. Why don’t you use the hover rig on creature baits? It’s well suited for them - just about any creature bait, even a lot of stick baits with or without curly tails or paddle tails, it’d really bring the life to a creature bait- darting around the bottom- but all I see is straight tail fluke style baits. Is there a reason
I do and it does work well with some
I'm fired up to get my hands on the Hover rig. It looks like this is a slow, finesse type presentation and would not replace your standard swimbait jighead. It's best used when you need to slow down and fish finesse, correct?
Agreed
That lake looks similar to Lake Martin in Alabama which is loaded with Spotted Bass. Good luck this year! Love the Cover Shot rig!
awesome!
Matt I fished the Hoover rig this week on the Kankakee River which I’m sure you remember and I had two 40 fish days in a row ! I rigged it with the Strike King Baby Z too bait. Unbelievable rig Thank You 👍
Those are killer days on the kankakee!
Made that many years ago. Do not stop in your quest, as there is more to the design. It is a fish slayer.
Awesome!
I’m going to use it for the first time tomorrow in a tournament Saturday and Sunday nice video mat good luck in your tournament have a blessed day
Good luck!
Yeah, 50mph ! We had it Wednesday now Friday!! Waiting on it to take the green house down.
dang thats nuts!
I received your hover jigs and I have the Keitech Shad, and Yamamoto has a Shad shape floating worm in 2 sizes that I have tried and like , I wonder how many folks have jumped on this technique, mainly because I think it’s a great tool and it’s a bit faster than a jig or texas rig. Glad to see fish will hit it on the retrieve almost like a swimbait 🤷🏻♂️😜🍀🎣🍀
lots of positive feedback coming in from viewers
Just received my hover rigs. I'm here in Florida and can't wait to get out and try them out. I'm going to use them with the Yama D Shad and Zoom super fluke.
Right on!
I gotta ask, are you catching up on the orders for these? Seeing this video is getting me antsy to try out this technique.
yep if you havent received them yet, then your order will be shipping monday or tuesday. Then we will be caught up and shipping out on a daily basis with lots of inventory on hand
Great video, Matt! Which of the 2 jig sizes were you using with the Keitech?
3/64 oz with the 1/0 hook on a 4" shad impact
Good video and info on the Hover Rig Matt.
Thanks 👍
Thank you for showing us how to rig that, I have never seen someone pull the head over the tip of the weight like you did!
good luck!
Just got my hover rig jig heads yesterday! Can’t wait to try them
Out!
Have fun!
Im finding you need to be a line watcher with the hoover rig . Thanks Matt
it helps!
My Hover rigs are on the way, got the email notification yesterday. Can’t wait to try it 😊
Hope you enjoy it!
I live in Florida, most of the lakes I fish don’t have the vertical depth to hover rig . I was wondering Matt if you could put the hover rig on a bobber and twitch it like a bobber and Fly rig ! Allot of lakes are 10 ft deep with 5 ft of hydrilla. Thinking of having it float a foot above the the grass or hydrilla!
i think that would work great but i also love fishing it on the bank in shallow water
@@MattStefanFishing How do you hover a bait in shallow water ?
when will it be available to ship to canada
working on it!
Matt, this method is amazing. I tied a hook keeper onto my hooks. This method is so productive! The first fish I caught using it was a 21-inch spotted bass. The soft plastic was a Berkley Power stinger.
Yes! great to hear and several others have said the power stinger is great on it!
@@MattStefanFishing 1 bait lasted the entire day. Most if not all of my catches we're deeper in the the bass's mouth. This method really reminds me of the imotion method, but you can do this all the time. I-motion baits are only really to be used when it is calmer.
Good luck in the tournament 👍
Thanks!
That bait might slay on a drop shot!
yep!
