The 1st of September 2009 was a a truly historic day for Ennis and indeed for Co. Clare as sporting legend Muhammad Ali paid a visit to the town in the south west of Ireland to visit his ancestral home.
It was an emotional day for the thousands that turned out in the hope of getting a glimpse of one of the worlds greatest sporting heros.

I visited Ireland, as a black woman, muslim and wearing headscarf I was a bit worried visiting rural areas of Ireland, everybody was really friendly to me and smiling and welcoming I was overwhelmed by their kindness, I visited Belfast and lived there for sometime I was dearly welcomed, I made friends for life. I love my Irish people
You will always be welcomed to our beautiful land...Indeed the first Muslim to be elected to Dáil Eireann was from County Clare.
Never judge a book by its cover as the saying goes. You open it to what is inside. I am Irish, Catholic. My girlfriend is Thai and Buddhist. But we are humans. I never judge people on their skin colour , religion or gender.
The IRA trained and gave weapons to the PLO. as well as Nelson Mandelas group SACP. The Irish will always help the underdog,
and the IRA is proudly affiliated with Antifa.
But you are one of us no matter where you come from,
I met Muhammad Ali on that day in Ennis and i skook his hand that moment will stay with me for the rest of my life

E Gleeson Met too, I shook hands with the champ in 1988 when he visited my home city Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. I still cherish that moment and proud of it. He's really the Greatest Boxer Ever with Intellects and Quick-Wittedness.
not sure though if he is really from Irish roots but if that's so then no wonder his Irish & Black genes for sure contributed in his endeavors. Bless you Ali.

Many signs read: "No Blacks OR Irish" Irish men MARRIED Free Black Women thus the African Americans with names like: McMillian, McBride, McDougle, McNabb, etc. Many people do not know the horrible way the Irish were treated. They have lived peaceably with Blacks since the founding of America.

+Anthony Freeman yes you are right! history does not reveal the true horror the Irish experienced for centuries under British rule and the slave trade! the Irish were cheaper than the African slaves thus the British just brought a number of blacks and cross bred them with Irish females and that provided a constant crop of generations of slave's... so basically generations of children were born into and died in servitude! then of course there is the matter of genocide during the GREAT famine!

Clare is an interesting place-Daniel O'Connell from Kerry and Dev from Brooklyn both were elected by Claremen as MPs/TDs. Then,I think a South African of Indian ancestry was the first non-Caucasian elected to the irish parliament.
It suggests a fine tolerant generous people. Something indeed to be proud of in a world of intolerance.
