let me explain to u the member number problem that u are facing with it not being the same in all mv
*so when exo started out they got 12 members you can see it in old video and then those 12 member got separate too two unit exo ~k which stands for exo korean then the other unit is exo -m which stands for exo mandarin(Chinese )
but then our frist member luhan (our Chinese member)got in lot of trouble with sm it is long story but the main reason is that sm entertainment doesn't treat the Chinese members and the korean members equality....and then second member kris lu left too he is also the Chinese member and one of his reason is also not treated equally with the korean members and then the 3rd member left tao (again he is a Chinese member ) and he left for the same reason equality... and all 3 of them used sm entertainmentfor this treatment but it is still going on for all those Chinese artists under sm entertainment (😭).....at this point the members got cut to 9 members !!!!
*currently they are 9 members and no unit with the problem
* and currently 3 or 2 members are not active cause of some personal problems...like family and one of them got a baby

EXO was no.1 in 2012 - 2016 without rival from the 3rd gen. Their rival was SNSD, Suju, and Bigbang. They won all of daesangs from the award show and being top 1 seller since 2012-2018. In the last 2016, BTS won Daesang and become an EXO rival. BTS popularity blooms in 2017 - 2018. And now BTS and EXO are super popular and the biggest Kpop group. Only Seventeen come close but not so close to these two groups.
EXO case same as TVXQ, They debut in 2003 without boy group (Kpop group) rival, their rival was BoA, Rain, Se7en, and another popular soloist.
That's why TVXQ starts 2nd gen (2003) and EXO starts 3rd gen (2012). 1st gen begins because of the first Kpop group with modern Kpop system debut H.O.T (1996). All of the groups from SM ent.

If their “weakest” singers were placed in another group, they would easily be lead vocalist material.
However, as you thought, they and most if not all kpop groups have particular positions for each member, ie: center, lead vocalist, main vocalist, main rapper etc.
and I’m glad you noticed but Exo respect the beat!! Their choreo from their debut to this day follows the beat (and are intricately linked to their storyline and superpowers) - Kai, is the idol of idols and is arguably the best dancer in kpop only second to maybe Shinee’s Taemin (who’s actually his close friend!)
Exo are Kings of RnB and vocals. Periodt. Exo are the nation’s boy group for a reason and I hope you can explore them fully. Their discography is the most versatile out there and one of the reasons why they won album of the year for five years in a row and would have continued had it not been for manipulation in chart award shows ...
Exo-Sc (sub unit) is a rap based duo and I suggest checking them out.
Finally, EXO-Ls are a VERY powerful fandom. Only shame is that we don’t stream and are quite lazy in that aspect hence our ‘fewer’ views, but what we lose in streaming, we make up in album sales and our voting power and expenditures - Oh Sehun Bar, let me just say, is CRAZY rich and supportive of exo!! 🔥💖

Quick history: "EXO'S NUMBER OF MEMBERS"
EXO is originally 12 members divided into 2 sub groups EXO-K (promotes in Korean) and EXO-M (promotes in Mandarin) but they can also promote together. 2 chinese members left in 2014, another chinese member in 2015, and since then the sub-groups promotion thing was stopped and they promote both in Korean and Mandarin with the remaining 9 members. However since 2017, Lay (the only Chinese member that was left in EXO) cannot promote with EXO and I think it's because of the Kpop in China issue thing, so he promotes as a solo artist in China but then was featured again on Tempo MV in 2018 but still cannot promote with them. Don't worry because Lay is still a member of EXO even he cannot promote with them. On 2019, two of the members enlisted in the military (Korean mandatory thing) so they are only 6 of them remaining by the end of 2019. This year another 1 member is about to enlist tomorrow so they'll be focusing more on the solos and sub-unit EXO-SC promotions. All this happned but yes, I am still an EXO-L ❤

EXO and BTS are two completely different bands with different history and style. EXO debuted in 2012 as a group of 12 people, but then 3 members left the group and now there are 9 of them. i love how he mentions about EXO's style of clothing a lot, their stylists and sponsors really know which clothing pieces suit them well, since EXO members are huge fashion icons too.

In EXO discographies, you'll see a lot of red colors especially red cube. Actually that's Red Force (the antagonist character)
So this is the simple explanation to understand every EXO mvs, this is not in order or full storyline, just a simple explanation of their mvs
- many people said that EXO lost their super power so they fight Red Force without super power, together (Love Me Right mv)
- you'll see EXO trying to runaway and caught by someone because they're in weak conditions (Monster & Lotto mvs, patchcode teaser)
- Red Force caught the members and did an experiment on them (Lucky One mv)
- once they got their super power back they couldn't control its (Kokobop mv) and overused its (overdose mv) make them turn into wolf (Wolf and Growl mvs).
- Because of the experiment that have been done on them, Red Force create their clone, X-EXO or we could say the alter ego of EXO (obsession mv) so they have to fight their alter ego.
Even though MAMA is their debut song but we believe MAMA mv is the ending of EXO storyline because they fight Red Force with their full super power (Power mv too)
The full story is much more complex like how baekhyun become double agent, Lay hiding somewhere and may rescue EXO members one day, the parallel universe, bla... bla... and you need to spent a lot of time just to understand them and that's what we do since the past 9 years since EXO first pre-debut teaser released on 2011. The story is still on going and I think it will end once EXO contract with SM ent. end.
Because of their concept, every single date of EXO's MV releases are on the date of past or future solar eclipse (you can check it by yourself) and you'll see solar eclipse in some of their mvs and teasers.
The official colors of EXO fandom is cosmic latte, the colors of the universe and the other name of EXO-L (EXO fandom) is "Star". So every single of us are stars in cosmic latte.
btw EXO is Lee Soo Man (SM ent. founder and director) long plan project, some fans discovered "EXO" name at SM ent. building on 2006 and fans found an evidence that LSM had been planning EXO since 1976.

Yixing (stage name - Lay) (the only Chinese member, 3 others who left were from China too) now promoting as a solo artist in China and America so EXO performing as 8 people. BUT now only 6 are active because D.O (Kyungsoo) and Xiumin (Minseok) in the military (Korean guys must go to the military until 28 years). They had a comeback as 6 people in 2019. Even from their debut time to current mv their mvs have correlated story. May b their mvs doesn’t contain extra colors. But they are kinda classy without unnecessary jumping and dancing. They are known as king of kpop. For their voice, visuals and dance skill. Just their agency is not intrested to promote them to the out side of asia. If they did promote them well exo could dominate all over the world. Without having the Power of promotion still they are dominating for all most 9years.. They started out with 12 when they debuted now they have nine official members three of which are in the military currently and one who is promoting separate from the group in China at the moment. They only ever use backup dancers on stages and at concerts and you can tell that they're back of dancers because they're wearing completely different outfits, usually all black and they don't stand out where as the members of EXO stand out a lot compared to their backup dancers. But they don't use them very often. But yes, they debuted with 12 people who could sing and dance... and act for that matter.

10. They saved the 12 year drought in Korea and became a million seller as rookies.
11. They always perform last in any shows as they were the most awaited group to perform, not until they stopped attending because as what i said in number 5, they got mistreated and even THAT award show's staffs injured some of their fans by not letting them in to support EXO
12. they hold the fastest selling concert tickets which sold out within 0.2 seconds in their third tour and also won best concert award in their second tour.
13. Their last comeback title track, obsession, released in nov 2019, ranked number 1 as the best song in 2019 picked by billboard, where billboard said that even after 7 years, EXO still proves that the crown of kpop is safe in their hands.

The first one that you liked is kai. He's a vocalist/rapper. Earlier days he would rap more but since exo developed into a more vocal focused group, even rappers sing in songs. We really cant box out the members into dance or vocal or rap because exo members do all those. In rapping tho, its mostly chanyeol and sehun but in some cases other members rap too.
I know someone probably explained it already in the comments but originally exo are 12. 6 members form exok and 6 members form exom. Exok sings in korean and exom sings in mandarin. They sing the same songs and sometimes promote separately sometimes together. In 2014, 2 members of exo m left the group. And in 2015 1 member of exom again left thw group. It is a fight against mistreatment of the company and not with the members. Exok and exom then combined into just exo.
In 2017 political issues with china started and the 1 last chinese member of exo cant participate in the comeback that time. Thats why there are 8 members in kokobop and loveshot. In 2019 2 members of the group enlisted for the mandatory military service of korean men. So in the recent comeback in nov 2019, there are only 6 members. Lay the chinese member still cant participate in the group activities to this date. In the following years. All of them would serve in the military, so we are expecting more solos (there are 4 soloist in exo: lay chen baekhyun suho), baekhyun will have a comeback this may. And units: there are 2 exo units: exo-cbx (chen baekhyun xiumin) and exo-sc (sehun chanyeol)

EXO are known as Vocal Kings.. they all can Sing and the main vocalists are some of the best in the industry. you should watch their live performances which are way better than the MVs. their discography is topnotch. most of their bside songs are RnBs but they have songs of diff genre.
