- On March 13, 2013 a conclave of cardinals chose the Argentinian Jorge Mario Bergoglio to succeed Josef Ratzinger (Benedict XVI) as pope. The new leader asked to be called Francis after the “little poor man” of Assisi. He longed, he said, for a poor Church - to serve the poor. Almost immediately the new pope set about reforming the Vatican, vowed to confront and root out child abuse in the Catholic Church, raised his voice in support of climate activists and sought dialogue with other religions. On December 17 the reformer will be 85-years-old.
DW looks back on what this pope has achieved in the last eight years: the opposition he has met with, and where he appears to have failed. We interview people close to him, his supporters and critics among the clergy, and Main Street Catholics - with their hopes and expectations of the “little poor man” in the Vatican.

I'm for equality, women's right etc. I'm female, but I only want a traditional male priest
agree. It's not about the equality of rights, but in the bible it is said that man will be the leader, either in priesthood or in family. Woman is to be respected, love and protected, and man is created to lead, to protect and to shelter. My point of view... hard to say it in English as it's not my mother language.
Well that is a requirement by the Bible and by Christ.
I commented "he disgustingly pressured the Argentinian authority to exonerate Julio Grassi from paedophilia charges." And DW removed that.
I wrote a book called the Galilea report about how Pope Francis sheltered priests who covered up abuse.
@@nataliemoon1512 can you share with us please
It may have been RUclips itself as they don’t like the word paedophile
It's not a generational problem. Its a morality and corruption problem.
It's (also) a generational problem. For example, in the french report, more than 56% of the cases were in the 1959-1969 (and the whole period was 1950-2019): since then it's diminished constantly and sharply. So, yes, this problem has clearly a generational factor to it.
Women have their say in the church-in nunneries. If they want wear pants, they should urinate standing up like the men. Jesus didn’t have women disciples.
Yes, corrupt "familyist" family members.
The church is a 'do-ing' role not an 'be-ing' identity.
I believe the corruption is of diseased "familyist" family members gaining short-term tax and insurance advantages for their families by grooming emotionally and or psychologically vulnerable family members with occult as hidden, incest connected as substitute mate, non-economic status inducements ("higher vocation" or association with "higher vocation") in consequence suffering uncontrollable "oscillation between persistent forms of regressive "familyism" [identity] on the one hand and an affirmation of radical individualism [role] on the other that, in destroying the family reverses the progress of humanisation, heedless of the long-term consequences of so doing." (from the address of Pope Francis' delegate as his President of his Council for the Family, Cardinal Vincenzo Paglia, at the UNO on the UNO designated "The International Day of the Family, 15 May 2014).
Yeah Aaron's sister was a high priestess rather a priestess... So we know priestess is a position within the church... And also there's that scripture that says it's not good for man to be alone... It also said to be of one wife and these were the church elders they were looking for to be priests... Despite what was world years ago by human making we still have scriptures to back up that it's the right of the priests to marry priestess is a position within the church in Saint Valentine would marry people all the time... Our forefathers the prophets happened to have wives... So it's only logical of the logos to be priests of one wife... There are too many factors that attribute to these debaucheries which can be thwarted through the procreative love of a priest and a woman... I remember someone saying they adversary said that the baby boomers were it's downfall and that they had children... From all this I hope that you love what he loves and hate what he hates... And I hope you find the ones you meant to be with Catholic priests
The most significant reforms occurred immediately after Vatican II, when Pope Paul VI expanded the College of Cardinals, limited papal electors to cardinals under 80 years of age, required Vatican officials to submit their resignations at 75 and began to internationalize the Curia by recruiting non-Italians.
The whole papacy is blasphemy and when the Messiah returns he's going to destroy the great whore of Babylon.
And the people left the church due to the apostasy of that council

I do respect DW. It is serious and tries to be impartial. But one can see it leaning towards the progressive side. They interviewed a lot of progressive voices, but we didn’t hear anyone explaining why it’s important to valorize tradition. And I think that’s important. And using terms like “old fashioned” this and that in a negative way... The Church should not be from our time, nor from the past or the future. It’s intemporal and universal. Many movements that are trending in our days may cease tomorrow. But the Church shall and will carry on.
The German progressives must not forget that in Catholic perspective, the Church is Divinely guided. In their rush to reform everything they may end forgetting God and His role. If the situation is not dealt accordingly, like Pope Francis is doing, there may be a Schism, which would be terrible. But God shall guide His Church as He has done for Ages.
"But God shall guide His Church as He has done for Ages." Indeed! That's our only hope. Viva Cristo Rey!
I agree!
Of course. Because they oppose christ and all He stands for.
The problem with many of the critics is that they want the church to be something it isn't.
It would be like me buying a red shirt and being angry that it isn't green.
It is what it is.
You're a fanatic
Exactly. These people don’t go to mass anyway and aren’t Christian. There’s millions of groups they can join leave the church alone.
Pope Francis needs A LOT OF PRAYERS!!!
As do us all.
His responsibilities are not that easy to handle. He needs our deep prayer support which he always ask for...
More than ever the church needs more prayers to be able to stand firm in this trying times.
I'm happy to know that there is a homeless shelter--originally destined to be a luxury hotel--right by the Vatican.
However, here is an important question: Why isn't there a fund dedicated to getting these individuals out of poverty and out of homelessness? Why not energy invested in mental health, addiction detox centers, employment centers, etc?
Poverty should be a circumstantial state of affairs, not a marker of lifetime identity. There is God-given dignity in work and in the ability to overcome hardship.
Poverty in lower level has been a concerned and charity of church. In indonesia, there are many training center. But erasing poverty is not the core of chriatianity. The core of christianity is being poor to be actually precise just like jesus. Jesus was once asked what was the last thing to do in order to enter heaven, he said "sell all your belongings and join me". Making people prosperous is not the core of christians teaching. But church has always been helping at least they are not hungry and lack of food.
@@kathrynseton1 yes you are right. BUT the spirit of the poverty is proven with detachment of material lavishness thats why jesus told the man who asked Him how to enter heaven is by LEAVING ALL HIS WEALTHINESS. That needs to be emphasized. It is true that it is not the SOLE way to heaven or even necessary to begin with, but this is what Jesus prefers us to do if we can.
@@kathrynseton1 again, i dont see anything of your comment against mine. Indeed christianity is about obedient to god's command, and the God commanded the man who came to Him asking how can i be saved, and the God responded by saying "SELL ALL YOUR POSSESIONS" (matt 19:21). He specifically said ALL. And He knew the rich man COULD NEVER, and never that He said this is the PRINCIPAL OF SALVATION, the principals are in the previous verse (obey all the commandments). But He implied that He prefers you without nothing than having anything. This is NOT THE SOLE PRINCIPAL, but JESUS PREFERS THIS WAY. The passage couldnt be clearer LOL.

Good piece thanks DW. Would add that the obsession with Jesus Christ we've been experiencing here in America is devoid of the Teachings of the Prince of Peace. Love of neighbors, caring for the least, love thine enemies, feed the hungry, cure the sick are nearly invisible. Pope Francis is Jesus’ ‘End Times’ sign for His Second Coming.
The reason Jesus calls our first Pope, St. Peter, ‘Satan’, is because Peter is talking and thinking like the secular world. Pope Francis talks and thinks like the secular world. Matthew 16:23 He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do.”
Jesus prophetic sign for His Second Coming, when we go into Messianic Reign on earth, is that we will see: Matthew 24: (after the gospel has been proclaimed around the world) ‘The Desolating Abomination Standing in the Holy Place’
Through locutions to St. Faustina (1930s), Jesus and the Blessed Mother, instruct us to prepare the world for Jesus' Second Coming. Hallelujah! Let Jesus Come to Rule the world, and take us into Messianic Reign, and His Kingdom Come, on free-willed earth!

If you keep silent now, you will be answering for a great number of souls on that terrible day.

“Do you need to convince the other to become Catholic? No, no, no!”
- Francis, in a video at the Shrine of St. Cajetan, Aug. 7, 2013
“The Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that all those who are outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans but also Jews or heretics or schismatics, cannot share in eternal life and will go into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels unless they are joined to the Church before the end of their lives. … and that nobody can be saved, no matter how much he has given away in alms and even if he has shed blood in the name of Christ unless he has persevered in the bosom and unity of the Catholic Church.”
- Pope Eugene IV, Council of Florence, “Cantate Domino,” 1441

The Pope should include in clumping down the Bishops in the Philippine who involved themselves in politics! They are losing a lot of members due to their political involvement . thank you
Amen! The Pope sure could do it for the Catholics but bear in mind that other religious leaders are active in politics too. It's ultimately in the people/believers' power to separate religion from politics. I mean you probably wont go to hell if you walk out from the mass when the priest starts talking about politics.
The priest are speaking out because there are things happening in the society that is not right.
I hope you understand why the clergy are voicing out because it is their duty as pastors and shepherds. You cannot just tell them to shut up if they know there is something wrong happening in the society.
I am from Philippines and I know you know what I am talking about.
If you have a discerning heart, no person, bishop or not, tell you who you should vote for. They may have their preference, but at the end of the day, you have the freedom to choose whoever you like and you cannot be penalized for it. If you have this freedom, you should also recognize that others have it too.
The church needs steady and calm. I pray for a faithful pope next to unite the fractions Francis has split and divided.
Whatta rich pope 🤑
If he cared about the poor , the church would give billions to fight poverty instead greed is apparently no sin here.
That is your Government obligation. You are paying your TAXES to your country not the Vatican 😊

@@doriannamjesnik3007 well read the news , they keep much of the donations , these are not selfless men who live poverty, they live in luxury for our donations. Here from news article : " As little as 10% of donations by Roman Catholics that are specifically advertised as helping the poor and suffering actually go toward charitable work, The Wall Street Journal reports.
About two-thirds of the rest of the $55 million in annual donations for Pope Francis’ charitable appeal, known as Peter’s Pence, is used to fill the Vatican’s administrative budget deficit, the report says.
The Holy See’s deficit in 2018 doubled to more than $76 million on a budget of around $333 million."

Am a Catholic but skeptical of the directions the pope is taking especially not standing for truth
by truth you mean your human (T)traditions, right?
God bless the Holy Father
A Liberal Catholic... That's an oxymoron. I must add that this kind of religious relativism is only in Europe or North America where its pressured to do so. In Africa and African Catholic mission schools the Church is still pretty much the same as it was in the 1950s.
Like always. Everyone talks about the Pope and leaves out Jesus. This is the essence of the Catholic Church.
Matthew 23:9-11 KJV
And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.
This is a typical secular documentary . DW is trying to explain something it doesn't even understand. There's absolutely no attempt to explain why the Church believes what it does. Instead there are numerous vague notions of "reform" mentioned. The Church cannot reform God's teaching, if you want it to then you cn simply leave.
We aren't looking for modernization. The only hope this church has of surviving is returning to tradition
It’s never gonna happen. The constant itch of reforming has plagued the Roman Catholic church for many decades, if not centuries, especially after Vatican II
Retvrn bros are delusional
I wrote a book on how Pope Francis protected priests who covered up sexual abuse. It's called the Galilea Report
Jesus was very progressive, yet he did not have women as apostles. It's therefore not the Pope who refuses to ordain women. The stand with which Christ stood for women shows that refusing to have women apostles was not just an issue of culture.
Are you sure he had no female disciples or apostles? Just like many/most Muslims will not agree there is a gay Imam, even if there is....
Even if there were, the society on mass would not have recognized them for their worth. Just like there have been a few female popes for very short periods of time. Erasing parts of history did not make them not happen.
Mary Magdalene was an apostle. I think that they were written out of the gospels. There were many female leaders in the early church.
@@joanlynch5271 it's good you say "I think ...". That says you are also aware that that is your opinion and not the fact. Second, writing women out of the gospels portrays the Evangelists as dishonest. If that was the case they would not have reported incidents in which Jesus sides with women.
@@joanlynch5271 In many of the Gnostic Gospels, Christ had women Apostles.

“It’s an insult to the holy name and a disgrace to the Christian faith. In certain parts of the Christian world, followers of Islam are allowed to meet in their temples or mosques in which, the Saracens need to adore the infildel Mahomet and they loudly invoke and extol his name at certain hours from a high place. This brings disrepute on our faith and gives grave scandal to the faithful. These practices cannot be tolerated without displeasing the Divine Majesty we enjoin on Catholic princes, one and all. In 2018, Francis gave Dutch pro-abortion activist Lilianne Ploumen the medal of honor in honor of St. Gregory the Great.
Ploumen started the organization “She Decides” to counter Donald Trump’s executive order that stopped U.S. Funds form being used for abortion outside the U.S.
Ploumen to the Financial Times: “America’s regressive policies on abortion are a calamity for girls’ and women’s rights that the rest of the world must counter.”
Within six months, more than $300 million was collected for “She Decides.”

I appreciate this effort. Its a good unbiased look at the actions of Francis thus far. I am of the camp that wants more reform sooner, though I respect the work that has been done thus far. The poor and the planet should be the Church's first concern and Francis has rejuvenated faith in those communities. Though i want more action, it's clear that Francis has a golden heart. I pray that all of these movements goes as well as he seems to believe they will. In the meantime we must continue to push for justice and righteousness. God bless all my brothers and sisters.
