I'm no weeb, but I'm just fascinated by the fact Microsoft embraced this kind of stuff for the Japanese market, especially during the Ballmer era of Windows. Keep up the good work!
I'm not surprised they did this as the 2010s were a time when anime as a niche was at it's peak. Giving people a reason, even a small one, to upgrade from XP and 7 was a tough sell. I can imagine some suit saying "Yeah put the anime girl on the box, they will like that." and because the idol culture is so strong in japan it made financial sense to also put on shows and try to make the tan's "anime idols". Idol culture in Japan is still wild.
From what I have heard in one of This Does Not Compute videos, Japan is much more in love with the Apple ecosystem. Adding some anime flair to Windows seems to make sense then as Microsoft speculated to get more people into their operating system, I think.
i think my favorite thing about this MJD arc is that since these are actual bits of microsoft history, he 100% has justification for showing them, weebification or not.

This is one of the things I love about Japan, they are obsessed with making anime versions of practically everything. Mascots and anime are huge over there and it makes things really interesting, a refreshing change from the lifeless marketing you typically see over here in UK/US/etc

Yes, that windows 8.1 promo DVD has way more stuff than windows 7 and windows 8 ones combined. Quite a massive collection of stuff. I bet that video gonna be at least 15 min long. I thought there was a special windows 8.1 version in it but what’s inside is far more valuable than a Japanese version of windows 8.1. It’s sad that windows 10 promotion didn’t go as extensive as windows 8.1/8/7 did.
Yes, I Have Been Buying Physical Windows Copies Cause They Have OS-Tans on them. It just is Very Cool to Collect them and I Tend to Use them too If I am Tired of My Custom Themepacks for a Change of Pace. Win 10 also had an Anime OS-Tan whose name was Touko Madobe, It didn't get the Same type of Treatment of the Previous OS-Tans, But Atleast It was There. Now I am Doubting Win 11 Will Get an OS-Tan as it has been already almost a Year and there is No OS-Tan on Site.
This series actually inspired me to get a custom Madobe Touko themepack for Windows 10 that recycles Ai's solo lines, since she was under-represented in the main Windows 8 themepack.

I had doubts considering windows tans usually gets released shortly after their windows version gets officially launched and it's been almost a year since 11 released and 11 tan isn't here yet. But also hoping there is because maybe 11 isn't that famous in the Japanese market just yet. Maybe around the next year or two?
for me it's funny how the Japanese market is so diferent and big, that even microssoft and some other big corporations produced special things for the Japanese market and these were never supossed to be seen by us

I think the dvd was made with the windows dvd maker, as someone who used it a bit as a kid it definitely feels like it is. The chapter select isn't much of a chapter select, more of a video select.
Also the thing of note is the screwed up color palette on the DVD Video (the WMV file looks fine)... That's the domain of Windows Vista's Movie Maker and DVD Maker. ALL of my movies put through both had the weird colours, and I don't know why
