Mazda Miata. The BEST Little Sports Car

  • Greg Your Car Angel explains why the Mazda Miata is the best little sports car. From the early days of development when all the other manufacturers had discontinued their sports cars, including the MGB, Fiat Spider, Lotus Elan, Triumph Spitfire and the Alpha Romeo Spider. The original Miata introduced in 1990. It was a front engine, rear wheel drive. Japanese quality together with reliability and easy maintenance requirements is what separated the MX5 from all the other less reliable cars.
1994 was when the major improvements occurred including the 1.8 liter engine as well as chassis strengthening and the new limited slip differential. The dual airbags were also introduced. The pop up headlight otherwise known as the barnyard doors was borrowed from the RX-7. They were not pedestrian safe so the 2nd generation it was changed. The convertible top was easy to open and close.
The speakers in the headrest was an awesome option. a lack of a dome light made it hard to see around at night.
The 5 speed transmission was great but the automatic transmission and is not good. The models were the A package, B package and C packages.
The one weakness was the stitching on the seats. Its difficult to fix.
The 50/50 ratio of the weight distribution makes the Miata balanced through the curves.

I’ll never sell mine. Last night was beautiful here in Western Massachusetts, full moon 🌕, cool, no traffic coming home from town......cruising along in my little Miata taking it all in! Winding trough the curves in the road, that full moon lighting the way......just so sweet. No radio, no other cars, nothing but the night air and beautiful night sky and the NB.

Good review Greg, I've had my 2000 since 05 and it has been fun. The lack of power was the only problem for a few years but a turbo and exhaust, and then shocks, springs and a 1.9 FM made it a lot better. They detuned it to 14# boost for the street and still got 285 HP and 275Lb. at the rear. I have used it at the local track and it is a more capable car than I am driver. It is a handful.

Here in California silicone valley is traffic all the time the automatic was very useful than the stick shift.... I hate the Stick shift Miata. Love love love the AUTOMATIC MIATA.

    • @rblythin

Bob Hall once answered regarding the 1.6 automatics: that the transmission was sourced from the then current 929 and should stand up to an engine with twice the horsepower. Given the low displacement/torque the miata doesn't stress them much.
I agree; I had two 1.6 NA autos and currently an 01 NB auto. Zero issues with any of them. Tho the 1st gen were by Jatco & not great, they do fine in the miata, just keep up on routine fluid changes. Switching to Aisin transmissions in 1999+ was a good move by mazda for its better known reliability. I do 98% city, 2% back roads, rarely highway. City use is certainly where it shines. I lockout O/D,stomp the pedal, I don't shift into overdrive unless cruising at 80 kph/50 mph+ for extended periods. Nice to see others enjoy their autos, we're a rare group in the miata world ;)

I bought a 1991 automatic miata for $300. (Needed a battery and top & fixing).
I was really impressed that the automatic would shift like you shift a manual. Same RPM same time you would shift manually.
If you stepped on it, it would shift later at higher RPM. It was a well thought out automatic.

It was always fun to drive and you can't help but try for perfect down shifts and perfect lines just going to the store for milk. @Albanian007BK 4 года назад +1

      www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2014/12/are-hybrids-reliable-.html
"Lexus ES 300h is supposed to be 71% more reliable than the average car" By contrast, the Toyota Prius is at 46%. The only thing that's gone out in my dads Prius is the inverter pump and thats about a 500-750$ fix at your closest auto repair store if not under warranty/TSB (like the Prius is).
According to Toyota, there are examples of first generation Prius cars still on the road after 300,000 miles, but that may not be the average driver's experience. Toyota claims that the batteries are designed to last for the life of the vehicle, or approximately 125,000 miles.
I would add about 25% or 25,000 miles to that number and expect your Lexus to least 150,000 miles with little trouble as regular maintenance has been done on it. - ie Appropriate coolant levels so the pump runs cool, oil changes on time, battery has been stored in cool-ish climates most of the time.

Am I doing things right... It's got more power than the Miata but probably weighs more. I'm going to make a lot of improvements to it. I maxed it out at 245km/h on the Autobahn (stock). I debated BRZ vs. Miata. BRZ is very nice and minus the torque dip and with a hatch it would be the great for my needs. I ended up buying a new Miata and kept my old car instead of getting the BRZ. It was a mental obstacle getting over having two cars for one person, but once I came to peace with that everything fell into place. Certainly Mazda could have made it flatter in corners if they had wanted to. Their choice, right or wrong, was intentional. I remember test driving the BRZ and around corners I was impressed with how flat it cornered.

Gary - just was checking my knowledge. Just popped onto CarSales in Australia, and models before the late 2000’s certainly did have air con. First two NA’s I looked at did have factory air con. Take a look at the dash in the pics.

The car in this video is a 94 first year with the 1.8l engine. After 14 years owning miatas and working on them I can tell you is the first two years 90 and 91 that were the least reliable Miatas.
Transmissions had problems with synchros and shifter Miatas stuck in reverse in those years were very common also the early 1.6 engine had a crank and pulley problem called short nose or Weak crankshaft as well as noisy lifters all those problems went away by 1992 so from 92 to 2005 very solid and reliable Miatas so happy shopping. 👍

My little red 1990 Miata, whose name is "Gisella", is like a red flag to a bull for all these high-testosterone car guys out there, and they frequently challenge her at stop lights and elsewhere, and so far she has bested a BMW 538 (5 something) , a Maserati Volante sedan from a stop light, and has been beaten by a nose-to-tail pair of a Mustang and a Boxter on US 129 Tail of the Dragon, and just Friday a guy in a (I couldn't see it in the afternoon sun) silver Ferrari 812 stopped in an intersection right in front of me, and while I didn't know what was going on blasted away from perplexed little Gisella like a rocket. But what is coolest is all the young guys in Miatas always wave. It's kind of a club. And little girls yell to her on the street. I have to donate to all the homeless guys on the interstate exits, because my top is down, and they always compliment her. One of those guys used to drive an RX7.

The "Mazda 3" didn't exist when this Miata was made. Not sure if you're comparing S2000 to a 90's Miata or a current one. Yes, my 2017 Miata has a tuned Mazda 3 engine - and it's a lot of fun in that car. The 2019's 2.0 engine was massively overhauled and is now as rev-happy as the 1.5L version the rest of the world got back in 2016. S2000 is a great car, but different in many ways from a Miata, old or new.
