I think that the major problem of this album is the production that has made all the album sounding boring. Listening to this live version it's definetly more enjoyable. But I still prefer a dramatic turns of events.
I went to it live. I would definitely go again. Waaaay underrated, it takes many, many "listens" to sink in. I really wish this would be on Blu-ray. It's so beautiful! Sometimes I think that, like a lot of the composers who are no longer with us, it's going to take that long for them to get the full value and attention they deserve. My recommendation: Take the time to listen to this, it may take months, but after a while, it just clicks. Unfortunately, a lot of the public and media express themselves through hasty opinions. And this a great example of what can be missed by taking this approach. Thank you for posting this!

The Astonishing must be the most underrated album of DT. Hopefully it have its glory before humanity falls into a distopyan society where music is prohibited.

This was a really cool concert! I went not know anything about the Astonishing... really cool experience. The sound system was incredible! When the Nomacs horn blew, you could really feel it.
If Labrie still had the same voice he had in the early 90’s then I guarantee you they would have made a live Astonishing dvd. As sad as it is to say, I don’t think that they want his current live vocal ability to be professionally recorded for everyone to see 😬

I actually think that they do have footage but have not released it. Apparently Labrie said they had to record it because they'd probably never come back to it due to the nature of the album. But it was probably not worth having it edited professionally and then distributed (although digital distribution would've been cheap). We'll probably never see that footage though
It would probably cost too much to have to re record all of James' Vocals or auto tune a good chunk. Same thing happened with the 2017 Budokan DVD we never got

Contrary to what most people think LaBrie sounds amazing here. Yeah, a few setbacks here and there, but overall it's a pretty solid performance. In addition, have in mind that we're dealing with low quality fan recordings which don''t do much justice to his voice.

But i've lost hope for that when i realized its been almost five years now, so we can at least all keep this unofficial version to get the vibe of the show!
I didn't like the album when it was released or rather it didn't meet my expectation of a Dream Theater album. However, a couple of weeks ago I listened to the album again and was surprised by how much I liked it compared to my initial reaction. I've listened to it many times since then and now I appreciate it even more.

I don't know why he tries to add all the high notes that aren't even on the album. If he would chill out and just sing the lower parts, everything would be fine. Singer for Fates Warning does that for their old songs and it sounds great.

I don't get all the hate for LaBrie in the comments. Sure, these performances aren't perfect and there are a few really rough moments, but he's not as offensive as I was bracing for. And as for it being a hindrance to a live DVD... they've left much worse unedited on professional releases, so...
LaBrie hits the lower notes beutifully. cant he just realise that he cant hit as high notes anymore and stick to lower ones. it would make the experience of seing them better and would probably be healthier for his voice
I enjoyed this movie, because i do identify with the main character, but not with the movie's intended conclusion. Excellent video.... besides the mispronunciation bit.
This is the only DT album I've ever listened to. And if it weren't for my ears being wiiiiide open to the unorthodox and the abnormal, i probably wouldn't care for this album the way I do. It's absolutely an acquired taste. But i'm thankfull to have acquired it. Is all of DT's album work as Broadway/Musical-like as this? Im hoping so, cause it suits the band's name.
if you're looking for that "opera rock", symphonic metal style I definitely suggest to check out Scenes From a Memory (their first concept album), the song Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and the Octavarium album (which feature a real orchestra on 3 tracks). I'm sure you're gonna love them!

Agree, took me about 6 or 7 listens to begin to like it. From there I realized how good it is (helps once you know the story, which takes time)
It took me 4.5 years for it to sink it

Saw this concert live in Baltimore. In THAT performance, LaBrie nailed EVERYTHING! IT was the beginning of the tour. Very grateful!

It's a mystery to me why they don't write new music 1 or 2 keys lower in order for LaBrie to be able to hit the notes live.

Because they are a band that haven't progressed since the early 2000s when he was still able to hit those notes.
