Haha... I just happened to click on this vid just for grins, as I already own the Esee 5, but I start watching and low and behold you show the Husqvarna 13" hatchet which I also own. Guys you can't go wrong with purchasing either of these items.
I do use my Esee for more bushcraft tasks and the coating made things a bit more difficult, do to friction. I did strip my blade of it's coating using Fast Orange and gave it a unique patina using good old yellow mustard.
Really nice kit! The only thing I would add is an orange plastic bag. Good for shelter, water collection, additional signaling and other survival uses. All that with the ESEE 5 and the right knowledge coud replaces a bug out bag.
andres otoya If I had an ounce of room left inside of it I think a orange plastic bag would be great to have, no doubt. And as long as I had this knife on my hip I KNOW I can survive. It's the game changer.
Fantastic video!! Ive recently ordered an Esee 5 with the accessory pouch. I like your review on the knife but your survival kit is awesome! One of the best compact kits ive seen. Not too much, not too little. Thanks for the ideas!
Thanks a lot. I wish I had taken some videos while working with the knife but I was just excited honestly. Thank you again for the compliments on my survival kit. I put a lot of thought into it
The more I watched, the more I appreciate your candor, thought, and planning into these kits, along with the EESE all around rocking knife. Outstanding presentation. Thank You ! randall
Well Thank you. I appreciate that. This was one of my much earlier videos here on the channel. As time as past I have been able to learn from my mistakes, and create better content while communicating more clearly. Atleast thats the goal anyway, haha.
love your channel because of your reviews I've bought the Esee 5 and 3 WOTG gun belt for my wife, father and, myself. Thanks for the info
Thank you very much. That's awesome
Great man,I ordered that knife last night. I think they almost look too good, a rel work of art I have the is
As you are using this as a survival knife, what do you use to prevent rust on your 1095 blade? Or does it not bother you? Thanks.
I've had it in my truck tool box since the day that I bought it and used it in the woods several times. But not once through several years has it ever started to form any rust
Cool, thanks for the reply. I'm interested in the ESEE 6 and that's good to hear.
Got me sold on it...great video and I agree this is the ultimate survival knife. Addition of the pouch is a great touch
+The Survival Outpost thanks a lot man. I've since used a file and filed grooves into my handle to give it a more aggressive texture. The only other thing I'd like to have is an additional of a small knife for processing smaller game such as squirrels, rabbits, and fish. I shared several of your videos for discussion on a local preparedness group I manage. thanks for stopping by.
One of the best high quality kits ever Seen!
Thank you very much. I had a lot of fun creating this kit. Projects like this are just fun, sometimes costly, but fun nonetheless.
Oh very quick Responses from far USA.... Appreciated very much! Only best will do ad far as real survival is concerned!
Just One tipp, which myself helped Optimizing GEAR: change paracord 550 with tecnora! Unbelievable 950 lbs
Greetings from Germany!
I've never heard of that before. That's very interesting. That's why I love RUclips and the people that make it great. Sharing information is what it's all about. Thank you for that piece of information, and I'll try to find some of that cordage.
Good luck Buddy!
Technora Not tecnora
But: it's Really Great!
I can tell you did! Its been tough to come up with the right balance between what I want and what you really need in a kit but also be able to save the weight. I think you did it! Thanks again
Lol. Awesome! I've wanted this knife for a long time. I'll be ordering it for my son soon. What a beast of an American tool. Thanks again, brother!
Awesome video man! I have an ESEE 5 and I'm loving it as well, but the best thing about this video is your survival kit. Very well thought out for a lightweight set-up. Thanks to you, I found the perfect compact flashlight!
nicely done man. I love the 4 & 5. The 5 is in my GHB at all times. Thanks for the shout-out bro.
No Problem. I've really been meaning to pick up some handles but I keep finding other stuff to buy, haha. I love my #4 but my biggest issue with it is the finger groove cut into the blade is not deep enough when you choke up on the knife for fine work. Your at a huge risk of cutting your finger if it goes forward so me and buddy took the dremmel to it and cut it deeper and he repainted it with Duracoat. it came out really good.
SONofLIBERTY totally agree. I don't use that finger at all. the edge of the blade is way too close to your finger. Great idea to deepen it. That would be a video that would get lots of views. I won't steal your idea. ;-)
Wow that's a really complete setup you have there, hard to believe all of that is just one knife.
gotta admit I really like the set up you have for this esee 5. I wasn't aware that pouch was on the esee website. regardless, you have a fine set up
thank you this is definitely one of the best Kit's I have seen .got a bunch of snow. coming this afternoon going to work on a double for my jungles
zombiehunter0000 thank you. Some people don't share your excitement for it, but I didn't show the knife in use so people flipped out. It is what it is. Some people see why I shared my ideals and that's all that matters.
Thank's for sharing this video with us. I've allready bought and used my ESEE 5, but i haven't modified my sheath like you did. The idea with the attached pouch is great, and the contents of the pouch ist perfect, i've gotten many ideas to built my own kit with this pouch.
smallmagnum awesome. That's what I like to hear. That's what I like my videos to be....create ideas with the person watching which sounds like it did just that
The memory card holder is an excellent idea. I've got a million of them lying around. Doing that today.
GREAT find on those camel tins. Absolutely superior to normal tins.
You might wanna substitute ranger band or better yet, silicone band instead of scotch tape on the memory card case. The scotch tape will deteriorate and/or become brittle over time.
8triagrammer very true. Not a bad idea. Thanks man
GREAT VIDEO. One suggestion. The memory card holder, I know it has raised parts inside. Take a Dremel tool carefully grind them flat so you can fit more shavings and they come out a little bit easier.
+Daniel Thomas Aaahhhhh what a great idea. Thank you sir. That's what I like to see on here. People helping other people. That's why I started this channel and that's what I feel that youtube is primarily designed for. I appreciate the advice.
great review... It gave me several ideas for putting together a kit of my own. one thought I would like to offer up is with regards to the Exotac Nano XL. I hear a lot of people making comments about wanting larger Strikers in the case of being caught out in the cold and the decrease in fine motor skill. As small as the striker is, I would have worried about dropping it and possibly losing it in that kind of situation. A simple fix I found is to put small key ring through the hole on the end of the striker. That way, you can slip it over your finger and it improves your grip as well as prevents you from dropping it and losing it. I'm sure somebody else probably already thought of this, but it ended up being a good idea that worked for me.
1371dragon that's actually a great idea dude. No one but you has mentioned it. Thanks for sharing
I have the izula II and I love it. I ordered the pouch too. I like the exoti
sweet kit ideas. the handcuff key is a nice touch - haha. I like what you did with the straw and iodine, that straw idea is great. A few pieces of char cloth in your tinder tin wouldn't take up much room. its nice to see a decent emergency fishing kit
Ironbar Anderson thank you sir. Just something I got on the mind and wanted to make it a reality
That my friend is an awesome setup! As a scout leader, I'm always looking for ways to "cut down" on material, and your rig does just that. Hope you don't mind if I copy it! That is if the wife comes through with my new 5 for Christmas. Anyway, great job
Jason Lowery thank you Jason. I appreciate those kind words. Share it, copy it. Whatever helps you sir in your endeavors. Wish you and yours the best of luck.
Well I pulled the trigger and ordered a rat 7 from the knife connection, they do a custom knife builder thing there and it's cool , you get the scales you like and the sheath and options that you like
i have the esee 6 im gonna make a kit like this its everything you need
Probably one of the best setups I've seen. You can get rid of that extra celox though, maybe put some folded up tin foil there. Just a suggestion. Very good job though.
Great video! I think that was a very efficient use of space available.
Paul Soderlund thank you sir
Love the knife. I did take the belt clip mount off and made a 2 piece leather D ring and snaps drop leg mount, where I can belt mount two ways
Your videos are outstanding, sir. The information you graciously provide is well thought out, educational and interesting. Two thumbs way up! 👍🏼👍🏼 Just subbed! 🇺🇸🗽🦅🇦🇹
Thats very kind of you sir. This was one of my much older videos. I have grown a lot since then, not only as a person, but as a producer of content as well. I hope you like the newer stuff, and I'll be posting some prepping stuff in the near future. Thanks for the Sub sir.
SONofLIBERTY Anytime! The first video of yours I watched was on the Glock 43, excellent as well. Looking forward to future content! 🇺🇸🗽🦅🇦🇹
I really like the snus tin setup. Nifty rig!
Thank you sir
I just bought the esee5 and the tops operator 7 today. I love the esee5.
I like the Snus tins! I thought that the Altoid tins were the only out there. Neat ideas! The ESEE 5 is a friggin' beast, ay? Ya done good! Thanks for posting Mr.
cavtj1 thanks man
Great review! Thanks! I ordered the venom green.
Excellent BUG Out prep... for bag. Picking up a 5 today...
Rockd awesome. Thanks for stopping by the channel.
Excellent setup! Thanks for sharing!
Great idea with the iodine! I did the same(improvised packaging)with a thicker walled drinking straw cut into four pieces: Two containing Potassium permanganate(KMn04) and two containing Glycerin(99.5% anhydrous). Great video BTW! New subscriber here!
Awesome man and thanks for subbing. This was an OLD video so if you get a chance check out some of my newer stuff. Thanks again and welcome aboard
Great review Sir. Your kit covers almost everything you will need in wilderness and will keep you surviving. You gave us a great package of real necessary items that you can really use in the field. Wonderful ideas Sir.Thank you. Ronnie, Manila,Philippines.
Hey thanks for the great review and Awesome tips. Especially for the tip about the magnesium chips in a memory card holder!! That's genius! LOL!! I'm already on it. Two thumbs up!!
Awesome. I'm glad other people found that useful. I was hoping others would find it beneficial
cool video, i'm looking to pick up an ESEE 5 & ESEE EB3 camp lore as my two survival knifes because this world is getting crazy.
Haunter absolutely. Couldn’t agree more. Stay safe out there
mag in the memory card container was a good one ngl
My computer is driving me crazy, I am going to order the exotac striker, I like it. I ordered the pouch with the knife, some really good ideas, subbed. Thanks. I was wondering how I was going to attack my kit but I did not want to junk up that beauty of a knife.
I didn't want to add too much to it either but for me I think I found a good balance. Everything I need is right there. Your going to love them both I promise. And you'll have many years of service from them as well. Thanks again for your Sub. Lots of things in the fire right now so stay tuned.
Say Heah, The way you have the sheath set up is very similar how I have my Fox Parang Bush craft Jungle Knife. It comes with a Survival Tin that attaches to the sheath and look's just like your sheath set up with your Esse e 5. I got it specifically to use as a One Tool Carry. But some habit's are hard to break. So I carry my Cold Steel Master Hunter in 3V when I go with my Fox Parang. Thanx for sharing and a good review. Thanx You.,,.
Thanks for posting! I've got some really ideas thanks to you!
Christopher Paul that's what RUclips is supposed to be about. I am glad that I was able to help spark some ideas for you. If you happen to do a review come back and post your link and I'll check out your review
I got a chuckle at that handcuff key 🔑 ... for when someone cuffs you but leaves you armed with a bad@$$ knife. 😄
Chaplain Dave Sparks I know right?.....I figured if I had to start carrying a blade set up like this on a regular basis, having an extra discreet handcuff key that you could hide on the body very easily could come in handy.
A bobbypin is more discrete and 100% just as effective as a handcuff key.
Or you come across someone else in hand cuffs not just for your self. I'm pretty sure if your cuffed all your gear has a good chance or being tossed. Lol
Nice little set up! I have one of those after market survival pouches attacked to my ESEE-6; they're great, aren't they? I attached a Bic lighter where your Suunto compass was. The signal mirror and the mini fishing kit was a nice touch. Thanks for the ideas.
Glad it was beneficial to you. Thank you for your feedback. That's what this community is all about. Sharing knowledge.
That's one sweet set up your rocking on the esee 5 bro really liking the way you got the sheath pouch set up is it the actual esee 5 sheath pouch you got attached there ? Love my esee 4 and my izula ll great knives, but that esee 5 looks fantastic getting me wanting one buddy
Yes sir. I got the pouch from an ESEE dealer in Tennessee. I love my ESEE 4 as well but my 5 is my go to survival knife without a doubt
Awesome set up!!
love your setup particularly the idea of packing iodine tablets down a straw. two thumbs up
Thank you very much
toss some mini very small gold hooks because many times you can catch live bait with just a tiny bare gold hook. and they need to be gold.
Great additional kit with the knife. Odd placement of the first aid supplies. If I was cut and bleeding enough to require a hemostatic agent, I would have that closer to the top of the box. You won’t need the fishing stuff in a quick emergency, but you will need the bleed control and having to dig down can waste precious time.
You can tape a canvas or sailing needle to the back of the sheath
That’s a good idea
AWESOME REVIEW, AND THAT SHEATH WOW
Great review! I have this knife as well and I think its one of the best survvial knives on the market. The only thing I dislike about it is the fact it does not have a 90 degree spine for striking that firesteel.I wish ESEE would start to add that feature to their knives, and maybe use a ceramic coating for their blades instead of powder.
I totally agree with the 90 degree spine. You can see in the video where I scraped the coating off thinking I was going to get a strike only to be shut down. I called and talked to one of the creators/owners and he told me when I asked why he didn't add it, he said "I get a lot of that from customers, but I designed the blade to withstand the heat created by the fire steel, so you have a much longer striking surface." But for me I feel safer with the blade away from my digits while striking a magnesium rod. Thanks for your time watching this video. Tube on.
+SONofLIBERTY Hi. I have an Esee 6 and I removed the coating and filled it down to where it was a 90 degree edge and it works great. I think I am going to get a Laser Strike and will probably do the same on it. They are great knives. Thanks for a good review and some good ideas for my kit. I also have that same pouch. Thanks and God Bless
+Jim Wilson Thanks for the kind words Jim and not throwing me under the bus for not chopping down an Oak tree with it, hahaha. Some people are touchy about that on youtube. Im glad you were able to get some ideas from the pouch (one of the main reasons I made this review). I wish I had a way to show you on here what I did to my handle with a file, but no pics can be uploaded into replies....HOWEVER I uploaded a picture to insta gram if you have it. you can see it by finding me SON_0F_LIBERTY007 (the ****0F**** is a zero (0) not a (O). Take care and Merry Christmas
That's a well thought out kit. I'm getting a esse 5 soon and your kit would be sweet on my new knife and sheath. Thanks for the great review.👍 Do you prefer the clip on the back of the sheath or would you prefer a dangler type belt hanger? Thanks,
I inherited a esse5 from my oldest son what a impressive knife batoning doesn’t matter look at the knife great video Oooh my knife is orange in color lucky for me when I set it down crazy old man in the woods
I had that same knife for awhile. I love the color.
awesome idea with the Magnesium shavings
Thank you very much.
got alot of solid ideas for my knife from this video, appreciate it.
BugoutBuds thanks man. If your on IG look me up. The_sonofliberty
I own this this knife as well as, bk, ontario, falkniven, coldsteel, but my hands down fav and best in my opinion is this Benchmade Sibert bushcrafter. Best design and materials to make a comfortable and fail proof knife. Ppl complain abt its sheath but who cares the knife is amazing.
Real nice kit man! One of the best i’ve seen!
MrSrtman18 thanks man
This... is.. excellent.. bravo ma'man
Thank you so much. Hope to have you back in the future.
Really nice
Excellent video my friend,im buying the Esee 5 knife but the handle looks too small.Would you recommend it.I have very big hands triple X gloves, yes my wife loves me every day and twice a day on the weekend. She will be buying my next knife as a gift. Now OK every time you said OK in this vid I took a swig of coffee OK,its 4 AM here and I have sleep but all I want to do is watch more of your Vids.Stay safe, just subbed.🤓😉
Well developed and thought out kit.. Have you taken it out and practiced with It yet?
Oh yes. I even done some work with it before this video. But the coating protecting it so well which is why the marks were barely visibly.
This sold me on everything.
Love the magnesium idea, and really thinking hard about this knife. Its certainly one of the best on the market. Pouch is a great edition. Subbed
Nice setup bro!! I like it.
Thanks man
Outstanding Great set up....
I will try to file the spine of the rat 7 if i have to, i feel it is important to be able to strike a ferro rod and get sparks .i ordered a rat 7 from the knife builder off the knife connection.
Say Heah, Oh, Yeah, My 5" Blades. Starting with my Busse Combat INFIMandu which I have (2), then my Ratmandu, my Rodent 5, my Adventure Sworn Guide in 3V, my Battle Horse modified Attitude, my almost 5" W. C. Paul'ies Pride, then my O. K. C. Ranger Afghan in the 5160 and my Becker BK-2.. I might of missed a couple. And not in specific order.. Thanx You for sharing. Dilly Dilly.,,.p
Say Heah, I'm proud of being an American. All my friends that have Essee's luv them. But I don't understand why the Essee 5 is thicker than the Essee 6, So I went with my Swamp Rat's, I got the Ratmandu and I had my Rodent 6 Modified, I had the top guard taken off and tge blade thinned down, Their Custom Shop did an Outstanding job, Infact it looks like a Ratmandu on steroids. I luv both of them. But I have to confess, I have Tec-Lok's, But I never thought to set one up as a Scout Carry, I finally found out I could a couple of days ago. I always wished that Swamp Rat and Busse made Sheath's, a small price to pay for what you get for the price. Once I made my sheath a scout carry, I bought some Victorinox PIPhone Pouches, Dual Pouches as well as Single Pouch, I bought them cheap at a discount store, So I took the strap which is a good nylon and connected the Dual Pouch right under the Kydex Sheath, I put my Brass Silva Huntsman Compass which is a small compass, My Grizzly Magnesium Rod, My Start my Fire Ferro Rod, First Aide, and a Almond Tin and I still have alot of room, and it's not really that big, But roomy. I'm just stoking I learned that. Yeah, Infact I went on a hike for a Afternoon Delight which I had a cup of coffee on the open fire and a baked potato beats Mc Dee's scenery any day. I also brought my G. B. Small Forest Axe and I carried it Baldric Carry with a makeshift paracord sling and it worked fine plus I had cordage if I needed more, I also took just a Haversack which I have the 5C's, But I just had to try out my new found Scout Carry, But I also have a Dangler Carry, I actually like to carry my knives lower. So I have a option. But I'm so glad the the handle is a very comfortable handle on my Ratmandu and tgere is nothing I want to change on it, On my Swamp Rat's I went with the Micarta and my Busse's I went with G-10. But seriously all of a sudden my Sheath has a nice Pouch and it doesn't look shabby but looks real nice. Thank You for sharing, Because that's how I get my idea's.
Great review! The only complaint is calling it a weapon at the beginning of the video. I believe you should be promoting the mindset that knives are tools and not weapons.
I couldnt agree more. this was one of my MUCH OLDER videos. Terrible honestly in my opinion. Ive came a LOOOONNG way since then. Hopefully my newer videos show that. I'm sorry about the late reply, RUclips doesn't notify me of all comments although I have to set to do so.
A knife is a tool and weapon. Call it what it is. A knife is an excellent weapon if forced into close combat, and are trained in its use. Nothing wrong at all with calling it a weapon.
I will never understand why someone would take there survival knife or for that matter any knife and beat it through a piece of wood! You’re taking a chance of breaking the only tool you have to survive with! I have hunted all over this country and served all over the world. No where could I not find firewood on the ground to start a fire, even in wet conditions you can find dry wood!
Its a tool , and you're not going to break an Esee easily. Even if you did it has an unconditional, transferable, lifetime warranty. I have lived in the woods for extended periods (Year or more) and I go camping for weeks at a time still and there are many times when its just easier to break out my Esee or tops or OKC or one of my many other knives to split small to medium size "logs" into smaller kinling rather than having to carry an Axe or Hatchet. And when its rating or wet, yes you can find dry wood, if you split it to get to the inside, hence batoning.;'''''''
If you buy a knife as tough as an Esee or something comparable that has been tested with hard use over many decades , the chances of it breaking are almost zero. I dont recall anyone saying that this knife would be the Only Survival knife or tool that they would have. I dont leave my home without one of my knives on my belt, a folder in my pocket and another fix blade on my go bag (which goes everywhere I go all the time). so, I have no reason to worry about one knife being my only survival tool.... The main survival tool anyone needs is knowledge, but if you don't understand why anyone would "baton" wood, then no matter where you've hunted or served you've obviously not been in a situation where it would be easier to "baton" wood with a knife rather than use an axe. Just because you don't understand it doesn't make it wrong.
There is no way that an Esse 5 will ever be damaged by batoning.
Batoning is definitely silly, but you're also not going to break this knife.
I recently bought this knife and made the mistake of not checking out the box it came in, just the knife, when I told the salesman I would take it he grabbed the knife and put it in the box closet it up and put it in a bag and took my money, 150 dollars, when I opened the box later and took out the knife there was no sheath for the knife, I took it back to the store and asked about the sheath and was told that model did not come with a sheath and he would be happy to sell me one for an extra 50 bucks, I declined it and said that I would make my own sheath, I called the people at ESEE and was told that model did come with a sheath and was being ripped off by the store where I bought the knife and they offered to send me a sheath but I declined saying that it wasn't their fault and that I would make one for the knife myself. I would say to everyone out there to not make the mistake I made, to always check out everything that you buy and make sure that everything is there that is supposed to be there, there are to many people that are trying to rip you off today and the only way to stop them is to check out what you buy and report them to the right people when they try to get over on you
Very good video man!
Thank you
Amazing review, like it. Great ideas. Thanks :-)
Thank you. I think my set up is a little different than most people's. Glad you liked it
If you want a high viz bobber for fishing at night , then you should buy those mini glow sticks ….they are one inch long and you can tie them on your fishing line , you get a pack of 100 for like 10$ or so.
Nobody was ever saved by fishing with some line while wandering in the woods. Not once in all of human history.
Awesome video. Gave me great ideas!
That’s one of my older videos but I really had fun making this little kit.
The mirror needs the star aiming reticle
It's got a clear hole in the center for aiming
Thank you for sharing some good tips
You’re most welcome. This was a very, very old video. I’m going to try to get back into more preparedness type of videos but check out some of my newer content. I would like to say that I have came leaps and bounds since this stuff was recorded LOL
@@SONofLIBERTY definitely subscribed and follow :D.
great vid man where can I get one of those handcuff keys
Mark sandoval click on the down arrow button under the video or see more tab. You'll see a whole list of links, and the first one is to the handcuff key.
Good planning.
Hello there, thank you for your review. Sorry for my English, Im Scandinavian. A question for you. I Have the ESEE 6, but I find the linen micarta not to my liking. I much prefer the grip on my Bk16, which is canvas i believe, the same as ESEE 5. I know the ESEE 5 handles fit the 6, but it would look strange with the ESEE logo on both the blade and the handle. You owning the 5, do you believe it would be possible to grind down the ESEE logo on your handle? Or is it painted on deep? Best regards, Dag U.
***** Sorry for the late response and your English is better than some people here in the States. I do believe that you could grind/sand the logo off if you wanted too. I would still suggest checking out HarleyWood23 channel and he has a video specific to the ESEE aftermarket handles. you may be able to find something more fitting to your exact liking without a logo at all on it.
SONofLIBERTY
Awsome, thank you so much for you help.
I bet you could just fit a mini bic lighter in one of those snuff cans or even in the sheath.
Only thing is that, I would have rather got off some paint from the pommel's edges to use as a striker and preserve the whole coating on the blade. Good video anyway 👍
Nice video. Cool knife. Never heard of Esee. I'm a Gerber knife fan. Doesn't help when you live a mile away from Bass Pro Shops so I buy what they sell. lol
That was a very good video and extremely helpful . You should make a kit like these and sale them . I'd buy 2 lol
THANKZ
Thank you very much
pretty good vid Sir
Hello. I have the ESEE 6, and I do not like the handle. Its abit too smooth for my liking, the handle on the 5 seems more rough. And as far as i can see both handles have the same shape, do you think the handles on the 5 would fit the 6?
I don't think so but I could be wrong.i would do a google search for aftermarket handles for the ESEE 6 and you'll be surprised at what you find.
SONofLIBERTY
Thanks mate :)
+Dag Ut The 5 and 6 scales are interchangeable. The 6 scales are linen micarta, the 5 scales are canvas.
I noticed you removed the coating off the spine. I'm assuming that's for striking a ferro rod. How did you do that? Also, is it effective?
Frank Leone DONT DO IT...hahaha it failed. I was really frustrated because I really wanted it to work and so I called the company. I did end up talking to one of the creators of the knife. And he said the reason it didn't work is because it did not have a true 90° edge. He said that the knives were built well enough to use the actual cutting blade to strike the Ferro rod but I've always believed that it would dull the knife and you always want to keep a good edge. I actually took one ESEE knife and used it to shave off the protective coating
SONofLIBERTY wow! Thanks for that. Have you tried using the actual cutting edge on the ferro rod? If so, did that work? I'm sure if they said it was designed to use the cutting edge for everything including striking a ferro rod it won't do any harm.
Frank Leone they did, and it does work great. My ONLY concern is a safety issue using the blade in that direction and pulling something small with the other hand. Especially if your dexterity is shot from cold, hungry, etc and you're being forced into building a fire for survival
+Frank Leone
You can use a medium sized diamond file to remove the coating and get a nice 90° spine on it. You'll have to file pecisely to get an exact and sharp 90° edge, but it works. If you don't have much practise in filing, i recommend to "exercise" on an old, cheap knife first.
I hope, you understand my poor english, it's not my native language, sorry.
Great Advise!
Will the scent of tobacco effect the fishing items?
You know that's a question I haven't gotten yet, but I believe that it may but I washed them really good with warm soap water and let them soak. One thing I would do is roll them in a little dirt before using to cover up my scent.
Awesome little kit! Great video. Thanks.
what is the overall length of the knife while in the sheath setup? I know the OAL of the bare knife is 11" but the complete setup?
I keep trying to think of a survival situation where I would need a handcuff key. I'm thinking if I get cuffed they are probably going to take my gear too. Is there some other use for a handcuff key?
EmpireFoodie I have two belts that have hidden pouches inside them. My thought would be to take the key and slip it into one of the pouches depending on the belt I'm wearing.
Great review Sir You have a new Subscriber !
Derek Stynes thank you sir. Make sure to check out some of my reviews. This was an old one
I can't find the signal mirror that you have in this video. Does anyone know what brand it is?
codetwohigh look up Glass Signal Mirror on Amazon
Where to get that green pouch that's on your sheave ?
It's from ESEE as well
very well done
Just Joe thank you
I will replace fire starter with sharpening stone, the fire starter can be made easily but if you have dull knife it will be no fun.
Say Heah S o L, Yeah, I see lot of good reviews, on Forums and RUclips on Essee Kmives, and I understand that a good tempering makes a 1095 high carbon steel a very good edge retention blade, I know that as a matter of fact, My friends that own them..I alway's keep saying, "One of these days' But it always seems like I get distracted some way or another, I do have a few 1/4" thick, 5" blades though, I have the Famous BK-2, The O.K.C. Ranger Afghan and the T.F.I. and the Gen2 SP-47. ALL have served me well and still do. But in the 5" lenght, I sometimes find that a robust 5", 1/4" thick blade is tough enough to baton with, and at that thickness they do spit good, especially if they are in the Saber Grind, which most of mine are. But, the only complaint is, I sometimes wish they would be a little longer, Of I'm batoning, Yeah I sometime feel I run out of some realestate I wish I had, I'm not a pilot where a customary 5" blade in action is used mostly. I'm a guy that relaxes using a knife in the bush. But I understand that things can happen unexpectedly so I'm lrepared, and I agree with Hoarce Kephart, He mentioned in one of his books is to "Get the best gear you can afford, because you never know that one of these days it could save your life" Well something like that. and I agree. But since I find 5" blade lenghts a little short in times, I tend to go a little longer, Another thing I noticed, a thinner Saber Grind splits wood pretty good too, For instance, I like my BK-10 works for me almost as good as my BK-2, Infact one of my ALL time Fav's is my RatManDu and I even have two in the INFI Steel, One I use, the other one is a Safe Queen, anyhow it's one of my Fav's, But then also I love my Rodent 5 which is just a little longer and it too is becoming one of my Fav's, I also have a Modde Rodent 6 which I had the blade thinned down and the top gaurd taken off and now it look's like a beefy RatManDu on steriods, I love that knife and it's one of the smaller ALL time Fav's survival knives that I own. Because I like for personal reasons longer and larger knives for my survival knife. Infact one of my Fav's set is my Rodent 7 and my Rodent 4 to me it's one of my ALL time Fav's combos in that price range, In the INFI Steel I love my INFIManDu and my Nuclear Meltdown Fussion Steel Heart or my Anneversary Straight Handle Battle Mistress LE and my other INFIManDu, this set is not used, But the A.S.H.B.M. LE seen a little action, but it's back to immaculate condition, mint. and my Son of Badger and my Sarge 7 is way, way up there too as my Lite INFI Combos, , Sorry about this long post to make a loint, But Yeah, in a 5" blade, I prefer a thinner blade, it's short enough to keep the blade strong over longer blade, Although my BK-9 at 3/16th's (.188") is a pretty good chopper and baton's like there's no mannyanna, that's why I took a liking to my BK-10, same thickness and grind and lighter. So Yeah, Rowan has a excellent tempering process and does a great job on the 1095 high carbon steel, But if I go with a hatchet and especially a saw, then my Belt Knife will be thinner and I will use that knife for what a knife is intended for, But knowing what I know, and if I was a pilot, I still would go for my BK-10 more so than my BK-2, But as far as chopping, I agree with you a 5", 1/4" thick blade will out chop a 5", 3/16th's thick blade, , , By the way, One of my new Trio I'm checking out is my new Hultafors Bruks 17" Agdor range Hatchet and my Wooden Handle Fiskar Folding Saw and my Rodent 5. The Trio is showing to be a promising set. Sorry about my dissertation, , ,
