If I may add, there are different kind of ponchos or sarapes. The one on this video can be found in the native culture of Michoacan, around the town of Janitzio. Once the kids start acquiring certain responsibilities and learning some cultural habits, dances and jobs, they give them their own poncho, with a unique design. That one will be with them until it's worn out or doesn't fit anymore, which is hard because they are made very big and very sturdy. Seriously! I'm Italian, but if someone who isn't said I should be upset because other people who aren't were "appropriating my culture" by eating pasta or singing opera in the shower, I'd think they were nuts! Contrary to what the liberals try to tell you, most people are actually happy to see their respective cultures celebrated and genuinely appreciated by others. Let's face it - in a world in which so many cultures exist, it's gonna happen, and that's not a "bad" thing.

As a Mexican person. I never even knew of the concept of “cultural appropriation” until I was living in an English speaking country and at first, had a really tough time wrapping my head around it. Because to me wearing a costume or a traditional outfit of a culture other than yours, is more like a compliment and an aknowledgement than anything else.
rodrigo vargas there’s is not such thing as cultural appropriation unless someone is blatantly mocking and disrespecting someone’s culture which rarely happens. They can’t even define it themselves, I’ve even heard people say you need to be given permission by certain race to do or wear something.... so who tf is this permission giver, load of bs. Massive L
rodrigo vargas From what I can see, its hypocrisy, the intent/motivation behind using another culture, or if you portray a culture in a way that devalues and disrespects it if that makes sense. It’s complicated yes, but Poc’s cultures have been mocked throughout history and looked down upon for so long that it makes sense for poc in the west to want to protect a part of our identity when ppl nowadays suddenly want to use other ppls culture for aesthetics and are praised for it (ie kim kardasian and boxer braids or kimonos). I really don’t think it necessary to know the history behind a culture to use smt or even ask for permission (unless it’s for a project or smt) But it really all comes down to the user’s intent
Ironically, he's actually supporting Mexicans financially by purchasing products being sold by Mexicans and supporting local and independent shops. I bet he supported more Mexicans in a day than the college students do in a year.
A friend of mine is Mexican and he told me how he is annoyed how people think wearing sombrero hats is offensive. He told me there were people offended about sombreros and panchos in the Super Mario Odyssey.
Most Mexicans will not find that offensive, heck we protested to have Speedy Gonzales put back on tv because he was taken off due to people (most likely not Mexicans) finding him offensive.

So when people find our where I’m from, they’re response is always, “oh, you’re not Mexican?” It is what it is. I don’t have the mental state of a snowflake so i don’t care and I’m not offended like these Americans in this video. It’s not even about them and they’re offended. Give me a break.
I’m japanese, and one of my friends loves Chicano/Chicana culture. (It’s an ethnic identity for Mexican Americans who have a non-Anglo self-image, embracing their Mexican Native ancestry, in case you don’t know) She paints beautiful illustrations of chicanas, also she loves dressing up like a chicana and posting it on her instagram. Oneday, a girl from the US sent her a dm and insulted her drawing, also her being a fan of that culture by saying ‘it’s my culture! Not yours!!’ She was shocked and sad, she even stopped drawing for a while since then. I was also sad, because all she does is based on her respect and love for the culture. In japan we love other cultures too, my college had a huge community that was called “African culture studies”, they play African instruments after classes and seemed so fun. Also I love Native American jewelry so much, there are many ppl around me who wears those Native American jewelry, because we love the craftsmanship. We just love other cultures respectfully as much as we love our culture
That girl that sent that DM is not a true chicana. We want to spread our culture to as many people as we can. We love seeing people embrace our culture. I'm very sorry that your friend had to go through that. I really appreciate what your friend is doing and hope she is doing well!
As a member of a family of a bunch of real chicano cholos. I can safely say that the person who dm'ed your friend is more of a fake then your Japanese friend. Cause I've met dozens of Eastern Asian, islander, white, and even European/middle Eastern homegirls that dress the part because they're down for their shit. And I wish she told my homegirl Kim that. With her big old hoops and pencil eyebrows. That looks so damn good in Loks in a flannel... What was I saying? 🤣 Tell your friend to love what she loves. Sending her Chicana card in the mail. Don't trip we don't need addresses there's always a homie who knows a homie who knows their homegirl who lives right by her. LMAO.
I'm Spanish and read your comment. There are so many Japanese people fascinated by Spanish culture, food and flamenco dancing, and I ALWAYS LOVE and feel very proud that they want to learn, dress and know more about it. Don't stop it, we love it and we send you ❤❤❤

Me, as a mexican, was watching the begining of the video and asking to myself: "why are they offended by that?" Honestly, I find it hilarious. Then he went with mexicans and I understood it wasn't just me. Guys, we don't care if you use a mostacho or a sombrero. We are more than happy to share our traditions to the world, and you are more than welcome to come to México any time you want and learn about our beautiful culture, and so we can learn about yours.
I understand what you mean and I also will agree that I love when people learn our culture but the problem is that not all Hispanic people are going to agree with you and we have to respect those opinions as well. We don’t know if he studies our culture. Him also asking only 5 Hispanics if they found his outfit offensive is not speaking of the majority of Hispanics. That is why sometimes I feel like this guy really didn’t show the other side of opinion from other Hispanics. If he really wanted this to be an educational video he would have spoken to other Hispanics that did found this outfit offensive.

How did they come to the conclusion that he wasn’t Mexican just by looking at him? Aren’t they also stereotyping by assuming he’s not Mexican because he doesn’t look like what they think a Mexican should look like (brown skin etc)?
Its not a stereotype here. That’s the funny thing. We eat tacos like everyday, wear sombreros and drink Tequila. The people who said that’s offensive are the really one who don’t understand the culture.
The concept of cultural appropriation is technically racist in of itself. It enforces the idea that people can't adopt or appreciate certain parts of cultures from different groups because of an inherent "ownership" of said cultures from those same groups that others cannot possess because of their inherent differences. It creates unnecessary racial tension and barriers between groups and only serves to drive people apart rather than bring together.
J.D. Hague wonder how many of those jackholes claim offense because of cultural appreciation, but have Asian or Indian iconography tattooed on their arms, chests, ass, or as tramp stamps?
I grew up with the notion that if you wore it for the reason of appreciating a cultue even if it was a costume event. That said, i do think learning about the meaning and history of the outfit would truly show an appreciation and understanding of the culture albiet a brief one. Humans also learn new things visually and a person seeing themselves as that outfit is expressing curiosity about that culture. There are those who wear to it to enforce stereotypes and mock the culture and that is why the term was coined, but it's a stifling overreaction that blocks the idea that the culture can only be appricited from a distance, and it blocks the community itself by not allowing people to wear it as he illustrated in segment.
I agree.....The problem is that I guarantee you he didnt mention that he was conservative trump supporter....and he didnt bother to tell them how really felt about Mexicans...so in that sense, it wasn't appreciation of culture whatsoever.
Also it’s to be stated that it takes a lot offend a Mexican because we often joke at our own expense. Hell our nicknames our parents give us at a young age are insults essentially lol because we don’t take ourselves seriously. I love our culture because it’s so inclusive we celebrate 🎉 those who wish to party with us!
The girl that removed the mustache is a representative of the most privileged and safe group in America. And Ik I rant quite a bit on cultural appropriation but I really wish more people just realized how hypocritical claiming cultural appropriation really is. I mean these sjws say their anti racist and totally want everyone to segregate themselves. In that case, maybe pizza should only be served to Italians, Mexican food to Mexicans, and sushi only to the Japanese . Not just the US. There was a popular debate several years ago and western west Africans were offended African Americans were wearing dashikis and face paint to be hipster. Lots of west africans online said they can't do that stuff without knowing the history behind it.
The reason we get upset when white people wear corn rows or box braids, dreads, etc., is because they are praised and told that’s it’s fashion. They even renamed corn rows to boxer braids 💀 When we wear our OWN hairstyles, we’re told that our hair is unprofessional, unkempt, and dirty. Since the 1900s, black people have been forced to straighten their hair and style it like white people-and now we’re finally loving our hair for what it is...but we can’t even do that without getting backlash while white people wear the styles that they’re hair cannot endure. I hope this helps
@@rebecca7133 why do the majority of black female youtubers say when they wear braids and their natural hair they get the most compliments from white people? Me included. Even when white people call box braids what they are black people complain. In 2020 no one is being called ghetto for wearing their natural hair or braids. Yeah but I wouldn’t say that’s our culture, that’s more like an indigenous people thing. Mexico is considered a western country with values and traditions. rodrigo vargas there’s is not such thing as cultural appropriation unless someone is blatantly mocking and disrespecting someone’s culture which rarely happens.

She was shocked and sad, she even stopped drawing for a while since then.

Being-offended-appropriation
We're Americans. EVERY culture is our culture.
It's not even a stereotype, it's just a historic outfit
The concept of cultural appropriation is technically racist in of itself. It enforces the idea that people can't adopt or appreciate certain parts of cultures from different groups because of an inherent "ownership" of said cultures from those same groups that others cannot possess because of their inherent differences. It creates unnecessary racial tension and barriers between groups and only serves to drive people apart rather than bring together.
Wise words good sir/madam. Very well said!.
nonsense look up the definition of racism. Racism has an intent.
Such nonsense. Wearing clothing from another cultural isn't appropriation, it's cultural appreciation!

The reason we get upset when white people wear corn rows or box braids, dreads, etc., is because they are praised and told that’s it’s fashion. @@nomarl4395 the same thing about rightwingers
An actual example of cultural appropriation was when Disney tried to have the rights for the name "day of the Dead" in Mexico in order to sell Coco merchandise, obviously they didn't got shit, meanwhile a dude cosplaying Mexico is not even a bad thing.
Real Mexican here, I’m not offended, I love it when people celebrate my culture, what does offend me is the word “Latinx” which I bet all them college students use.
Oh my goodness same! I’m not Mexican, soy Cubano, and it’s cultural appropriation when these students want to have communism in America. Also, I hate “Latinx”, it’s actually really offensive to hispanic/LATINOS.
THANK YOU, If they start calling me that I would be ashamed.
Why is it offensive? It's supposed to be a more inclusive term for people that don't identify as male or female.
Jacky Star Females are included in “Latinos” which is supposed to be masculine. Likewise we have “You guys” to refer to people in general.
@@greenie7603 That there is the problem.
HOW DARE HE NOT HAVE A TEQUILA BOTTLE IN HIS HAND
and maybe a taco?
Greg Hinson or a kilo of cocaine
Nah man casadeas are the best
Dangit now I want a taco.
Offensive to borrachos worldwide
we mexicans love people paying attention to our culture so it doesn’t offend us
Eso es verdad
Simon ese
Yeah but I wouldn’t say that’s our culture, that’s more like an indigenous people thing. Mexico is considered a western country with values and traditions. Only a small minority of the indigenous people dress like that. A small percentage of people who dress that way is not representative of an entire country.
Blurry_BanditØ but that is what makes out country unique
Yea me and like 5 other friend wore this outfit for Halloween playing Mexican music, we were all Mexican but u know u can’t really tell, well anyways there’s a lot of Mexicans in the area and everyone was complimenting/taking pictures with us
Yep my Chinese wife wants me wearing Chinese outfits during Chinese New Year. This is expected and appreciated and yes the Chinese sold me the outfits. Cha Ching!
0:45 _"Do you find my outfit offensive?"_
_"Yes", "Yah"_
_"Why?"_
**crickets**
Everyone here is offended and none of them know why, but they can't stop being offended, it's like an addiction.
NPC
Their social media circles inform them what to be offended by. To be as inclusive as they believe they are being, they should include these minorities into their social media circles so they can truly understand what to be offended by.
Its mind control by the communist professors.
That last "Mexican" spoke English without a trace of an accent and was dressed like any American student. I suspect he was born in the USA to Mexican parents and is repeating the typical second-generation immigrant experience. BTW, you don't have to be Jewish to enjoy Levy's Real Jewish Rye, or gefilte fish or matza.
desertkitsune - if you asked them if Stalin was bad they’d say yes, and if you asked them why there’d be *crickets* too. Kids just believe what they are taught and never care to understand anything deeper. It’s especially bad when the things they are taught are also completely wrong - like the existence and evils of cultural appropriation. Their quick response was the same as stating that pi is 3.14 - they believe it’s true with all their heart but don’t know much beyond that.
I’m a Mexican American and I don’t even know the history of what he is wearing and why
Guess I can’t wear them too
I'm a Mexican from Mexico, and I don't even know.
@@Yha1000itz calmado gringo

Literally no one but gringo costumes for halloween wear that shit. No mexican people wear this dude. No one, ergo stereotype.
The outfit is warm and the hat covers the sun. Certain parts of mexico can be cold while the sun is out and it bothers your eyes. Thats literally the purpose of it. Im hispanic btw
"You don't understand what it means to wear these things."
I'm Mexican and can tell you it doesn't mean anything. It's just a pancho.
R u mexican we? Es ponchoo sarape no mames
Jajaja, no mamen banda, eso es un jorongo, o gavan, el poncho es peruano, y el sarape se usa diferente, pero si se parece al jorongo
💀
Wearing those things mean two things, he is cold and he wants to keep the sun out of his face, plain and simple.
There are many outfits and accessories in mexico that do have deep cultural significance, however the attire used in the video does not hold any sort of cultural significance.
The only purpose they have are keeping warm and keeping the sun out of your face
If you want to know which outfits do in fact have cultural significance, you can take a look at all of the traditionl wear the different ethnic groups use.

As a Mexican that shit is pure drip
Lo único que me ofende es que su pinche sombrero está al revés.

Is wearing a thrasher hoodie when you don’t skate cultural appropriation 🤔
wearing jeans is cultural appropriation because these people are not farmers/miners/lumberjacks
Hahaha
Lou Ma La Bann hahahaha
It's pozer
The answer is yes by the way
This was the same thing that happened to the white girl who wore an asian style dress to her prom. Someone commented to her "My culture isn't your prom dress". This person was of course some easily offended person who was born in America. They asked Chinese people the same question and they loved that this person in America was wearing a Chinese inspired dress. Who doesn't want their culture shared around the world. He was making light of it in this video but most people do it because of an appreciation of the culture, not to mock it. We should share all of our cultures with everyone, food, clothing, rituals, celebrations. We can only be enriched by it. Lets keep sharing!
EXACTLY! :D
Ramon Lopez that girl looked stunning in that dress, gald she called bs on people who were outraged and didn't delete the picture
Ramon Lopez what's ironic is the dress wasn't even Chinese, it was Manchurian but China liked it and adopted it
And it’s only if a white Person wears someone else’s culture, if a Mexican wore a Chinese dress no one would care, but just because she’s white.
馬行空 Manchuria is part of China (even Beijing located in Manchuria historically). So it become chinese culture.. especially when many chinese used that kind of dress for more than 200 years..just like japanese says ramen is japan food. Have you seen vietnam traditional dress? It almost same like the chinese one but they says that is their own traditional dress. Many culture come from copying each other..
I am not from china myself, That comment above is just seeing it from general view. I know that chinese have diverse culture, south and north china has different langugage, food and cloth. It just people from western view that see it as “chinese”
Its not cultural appropriation, its cultural APPRECIATION
I'm Mexican and our job had a taco party, and I suggest we all wear sombreros! And one of our coworkers was like "no! It's racist and bah bah." And even I WASN'T allowed to wear one! Like wtf!!!!
Joeyblondewolf2 You are such a disappointment to your race!! Don't you know white people know what's best for you! ;)
That old cartoon Speedy Gonzalez is no more because of stereotypes... as well as his cousin Slowpoke Rodriguez.

How dare she rip off the mustache? These college kids are so entitled to think they can touch another's face without permission.

One I agree and two, THAT MUSTACHE WAS THE BEST PART! As a Mexican, it was my favorite!
They think they're entitled to touch another's face as long as someone's opinion doesn't agree with theirs.
I’ve seen Mexicans look like Will. Notice how the college students are just assuming his ethnicity 😵
They’d be embarrassed if he was an actual Mexican 😂😂 an SJW told me “Why are you speaking Spanish? Your not Hispanic.. Mexicans are chill. Even with violent backstory and their country currently torn apart by cartels, they still have the optimism, respect.we should be like them. because some of my people are just ashamed of the fact they're russians, and try their best to assimilate into EU,USA,Japan,Korea,Canada.

It’s not cultural appropriation. It’s cultural appreciation
No it isn’t dude.

Believe it or not, but in México, you wear a sombrero if you want to protect yourself from the sun. But for some reason, in the US, its appropriation?
no lie, when the Olvera street folks gave their approval it warmed my heart..
My friends and I wore this exact outfit once in Mexico City on a random day, not a single Mexican was offended. In fact many people wanted to take a picture with us and we made some new friends that day.
The one and only
We had a blast, beautiful city! And we did try out some regional tequila varieties ;-)
"Cultural appropriation" is not a thing in Mexico just so you know.
It's not a thing anywhere else beside USA to be honest , maybe some liberals in Sweden
Well, it’s is a thing in private universities in Mexico
@@mingfei1622 Maybe in some public universities in Central Mexico, the rich liberal college boy/girl is an American thing, the rich in Mexico are normally rightwing/conservative.
Cosme Fulanito i they used to be, at least their parents and grandparents are but consider that their children are bombarded with all this leftist propaganda
Very true I asked my Mexican dad who lives in Mexico if he gets offended by let’s say something that libs do and he doesn’t care lol
People don't realize that the whole cowboy culture in the us was adopted from the mexicans. So in a way it has become a cultural aspect that both mexican and americans can share.
