Wow, this is amazing. Big fan of David Choe and to find out his knowledge of GI Joe is a pleasant surprise. It's something I grew up with and have a lot of love for, specifically the Larry Hama comics.

I was eleven in 87 and I was all in on G.I.Joe, still am. I loved Chuckles as a kid, he is one of my favorite characters. I hated where the toy line and comic went in the later years, into space, mohawk Zartan, Eco Force. But in the years since, while collecting the toys I've found a fondness in the absurdity of it all.

All the love and respect in the world to Dave. He fits in perfectly here.

I love the story about him convincing a friend to trade him that figure and then having the parents intervene. The “bad trade” is such a rite of passage for kids. Shamefully, I borrowed a HISS driver from a friend and traded it to another friend for Wild Weasel. I was awful. My older brother was always trying to get me to trade my Cerberus comics for his Concrete. Never happened…

I hated Chuckles as much as anybody when I was a kid. But the G.I. Joe Cobra mini series from 2009 (with Chaykin covers) stars him and it’s great imo

In Todd's The Devil's in the Details book, he shows a splash page that was rejected for this issue because it doesn't look enough like an airport and notes how much work can be put into a page that never sees the light of day.

Larry Hama is the freakin man! Some of his stories I have read in interviews about his times in NY are just amazing.
Also feel David saying he was trying to hang on to those 🥷 days and being kinda ashamed/being too old/ and doing stuff I wasn’t too proud of, lol

I know what they mean though, considering the now long and proud history of Larry Hama, you became the guy that got fired by him lol
Reminds me of that reality show about the upcoming screenwriters being critiqued by Matt Damon and Wes Craven and Matt was saying you've got the Master of Horror telling you your script sucks lol

Great video awesome to see David Choe and Peter Chung in the span of a month. Get Jim Lee and you will have all 3 of the most influential Korean American artists!

The 1989 group of joes were pretty cool. Slaughter's Marauders in classic camou.

I totally relate to this episode. I was in my late teens when this ish came out. I HATED this generation of GI Joe but still bought the figures because I was a dedicated (but discouraged) fan. And when I heard fairly recently the McFarlane did an issue of GI Joe I had to go back and see it and INSTANTLY remembered this issue because it had the characters that made me cringe. I finally stopped buying GI Joes in the mid 90s.

Not comic related but since you brought it up. i went to action park with friends, they all went on the Alpine Slide except for me. They all ended up at the medic with road rash and skin hanging off.

Right about then was when I gave up reading GI Joe. I went to Hulk because I was curious after reading some of the Mantlo/Buscema run. I started right at the McFarlane/David run. Todd McFarlane was way too much of my childhood. [Edit to say: oh, apparently those were Mike Mignola issues which got me into the Hulk before the McFarlane run. One of my absolute favorite artists NOW.]
