  • There are currently 15 of these Arrow Dynamics mine train coasters in operation, but this one was the first when it opened in 1966. It was followed by five more over the next six years, all of them opening at Six Flags parks. The one at Six Flags St. Louis (River King Mine Train) was relocated to Dollywood (Thunder Express) and then moved to Magic Springs as Big Bad John, but can you name the only one no longer in operation (even after moving to another park)?
Six Flags Over Texas is located near Dallas in Arlington, Texas.

You gotta respect the classics. This coaster played a huge role in shaping the Amusement Park industry of today.

3 lift hills is insanity. Ron Toomer was a mad man.

Me too! I was probably about 5 or 6. I remember it being MUCH more intense.

There really is no coaster sound better than Mr. Freeze

I couldn't identify most coasters by sound alone, but I can identify Mr. Freeze instantly. It SOUNDS like a cold wind. Makes me wonder if it was intentionally designed that way or just a happy accident.

I remember riding this as a kid when we visited Texas. It seemed like such an amazing ride! A real trip down memory lane for me now, so Thanks for Posting! 😃

This was my first "big kid" roller coaster. Still love it, but ugh, the jolt on that third lift hill is ridiculous! But the back is still the best on this one, especially at the end when you just watch each car in front of you vanish down the last hill before you go!

I rode this the very first time when I was 6 years old. This would have been in 1971.

This will always be my all time favorite ride at SFOT. I have ridden it hundreds of times since 1980 and it is always fun! 😄😄😄

The only Arrow mine train that no longer operates even after relocating was Excalibur from Astroworld formerly known as Dexter’s Frebish Electric Roller Ride. This operated at Astroworld from 1972 to 1998 where it was put in storage at Frontier City from 1998 to 2005 when it was finally scrapped. Apparently during demolition and when it was relocated it was damage beyond repair.

This is the second tubular steel coaster built, after The Matterhorn at Disneyland.

I like coasters like this when they live up to their theme. It’s not like Big Thunder Mountain, but it at least retains elements of an old coal miner’s town from way back when.

Timber Topper/Rock N Roller Coaster at Opryland was a mine train. I ran that for 3 years. Those old skid brakes look so familiar.

First 'coaster I ever rode, about 50 years ago. Rode it again back in Oct. when I was in Dallas on business. Still a lot of fun, but I don't recall it being as jerky as it was.

Sort of reminds me of the Trailblazer at Hersheypark. Low to the ground. Not to fast not to slow.

This is "not to fast" because it's not a roller coaster, it"s a train.
