- Dia de Muertos in Michoacan Mexico has been on our bucket list for years and this year 2022 it finally happened! We visited the island of Janitzio, and the cities of Patzcuaro & Morelia to experience the Dia de Muertos celebrations. Dia de Muertos in Michoacan is also known as "Noche de Muertos" o "Noche de las Ánimas" because the most sacred part of the tradition occurs during the late of night November 1st into the early morning of November 2nd.
The Purepecha community is known around the world for their Dia de Muertos celebrations in Michoacan and we are lucky to have been able to witness it. The experience came with all kinds of emotions, both happy and infuriating ones. But let's focus on the light of things... we'll talk about the bad stuff in a next video.

Amazing coverage...loved it All! The info, interviews and camera work! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Thanks so much!! means a lot coming from y'all 😊
The interview with the lady at her father’s ofrenda got me right in the feels. I lost my dad in 2020 during Covid, we didn’t even have a memorial. No chance to take some time to celebrate the time we had with him. Very well done!
It was a similar case for this woman! Her father died 2 years ago (so during the pandemic as well) and this was the first year she could put up the ofrenda for him at the cemetery rather than just at home.
My father died just before we started our journey in Mexico almost two years ago. Minimal memorial. Sorry for your loss -Jenny
@@EatBailaTravel sorry for yours as well.
One of the best videos you guys have put together!!!! Love all the colors, camera work, && the story telling ❤️❤️✨
Thank you so much!! Glad you loved it 😊
Wow, much todo!!! Haha dancing pit stop haha lol. Very cool video and good job on covering the adventure!!!! Saludos amigos. Amazing videos como siempre!!!!
when we hear the music our bodies just give in 😅😁💃🏻🕺🏽 gracias Kris ❤️❤️
This was awesome. I've never seen Michoacan like this before. Next year, that is my goal. Thank you for making this video, it was awesome.
Gracias Jose! It's a great experience but it's also got its downside. We'll be releasing a part 2 to this to talk about how to plan a visit to Michoacan during this time and avoid a negative experience. Stay tuned 🙂
Great face makeup. I really like the ceremony and traditions of Dia de Muertos, it's quite beautiful. So nice that you both want to preserve this tradition and carry it on through your family. I wish all countries did this, a very sacred time.
Thanks, Cindy! We got lucky with a great makeup artist. The thought allowing such a beautiful tradition to be lost is sad to think about.. we are honored to have this heritage and feel the responsibility of carrying it forward 🧡
Beautifully Video My Friends! You even brought Tricia to tears! 😊
aww 🥹 saludos to you and your family, Kelly!❤️
this is still a beautiful video, you guys captured the true essence of día de muertos
Thank you, Iza!
All I can say is: Que bonito video and what a beautiful reflexion at the end.....gracias!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Saludos Karen!
@@EatBailaTravel saludos!!!
Love this, thanks for sharing! My parents are from Michoacán but día de los muertos was never this big for them but it’s amazing to see how indigenous Mexicans have carried on this tradition. Beautiful ofrendas!
it's grown a lot in recent years and in Morelia being the capital city it's a bit more commercialized and as bad as that might sound, I think it's helped the holiday's growth. Our families didn't really grow up with this custom either but we've really enjoyed reconnecting with this tradition ❤️ thanks for commenting Jasmin 😊
Beautiful video! I was especially moved by Kevin's comments towards the end. Your ancestors and future generations are very fortunate that you are taking this journey (as are the rest of us who get to share and learn from it). Well done! (PS - salud!)
Thanks, Dan! Salud y saludos 😊
This is such a beautiful video, i am def doing this as tradition, its a beautiful thing to remember our loved ones
it is a beautiful tradition
Thanks for another great video! You guys have really elevated your game in terms of energy, production, and editing! Congratulations! I look forward to seeing more videos and seeing you develop as content creators.
we're always looking for ways to improve, thanks for noticing 😊🤗 and thanks so much for your continued support
Dia de Muertos in Morelia, was awesome! Our nephew owns a shop in City Center, and provided, and painted some the art. Great time...
So cool!
Great video, like always! Can’t wait for part 2!
Part 2 is up now! We look forward to hearing your thoughts there
WOW! Soooo beautiful and touching. Excellent job. Your best video so far!
Really?! that makes us so happy, thank you! Saludos glad you liked it.
This was amazing. Thank you for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it!
Incredibly touching! love you guys.
Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
Love what your doing !! Keep it going !! New sub here
Thank you Christopher and thanks for following! You got some catching up to do. Feel free to share with others ! Saludos!
🎉outstanding job! Thank you for sharing this beautiful experience. I’m definitely putting this on a must see experience.
it's a very special thing to witness! Please be on the lookout for our part 2 for our tips and advice for planning a visit to Michoacan for Día de Muertos. We're gonna be talking about some of the not so good things we experienced and how others can avoid a bad experience.
We watched on our tv when it was released but had to come back and comment. It's beautiful to see people sharing something so personal and the displays for their loved ones. Not sure if we would travel during Dia de Muertos because we spend it at home putting up our ofrenda. It is nice to see how the motherland, where these traditions originate, share this special celebration for outsiders to see. Just wish people could remember to be respectful, especially the circumstances.
Jenny, loving the flower 🌼 crown! You both looked great with the makeup done. You guys did a great job. Can we get some carnitas content soon?
thanks guys, we appreciate you coming back to comment 🙏🏽😊❤️ I know what you mean about preferring to stay home to care for your own ofrenda, we definitely felt that while we were at the cemeteries watching everyone else be with their loved ones... we felt a bit of a void and longing to be doing that ourselves that very moment.
Thanks! 😊 and yes absolutely! We already started filming (and enjoying 😋) carnitas content. Will have that up soon!🤗 saludos amigos
Beautiful. Great video. It must be nice to visit during that time off year.
Thank you! it has to be the best time visit a lot of the decorations are still up! ❤️ 💀
First! Great video! So good that traditions are being preserved. Maybe places like Janitzio will decide to place a limit on the number of visitors to ensure the spirit is preserved.
We also thought that and then we kept hearing how tough the lack of income from tourism affected the island and neighboring communities who typically benefit. This was the first time since the pandemic since it opened and I think the most visitors they’ve ever had at once. They were overwhelmed but it’s also not the first time they experience large crowds so I’m hoping the local leadership can help prevent that for future years
Minute 1:26, nice aerial shot of Beautiful Morelia, you guys must’ve been at the Terrace restaurant above the Spanish consul 👍✌️
Yes we were! El Campanario 🙂
Awesome video my friends thanks for sharing your time with us 2 Canadians 🇨🇦 living in Mexico Yucatan Peninsula ✌️🐶🥰
Thank you for watching and commenting! Where do you guys live in Yucatan? Do you have a RUclips channel as well?
@@EatBailaTravel we are in Chicxulub for now
Plan on moving around Mexico maybe Xalapa Veracruz in April
Yes we have a channel 😊🙏 Gracias 🥰🐶👫
2 Gringos On The Gulf
Jenny and Kevin ... I brought a photo of my mother there in Patzcuaro and Janizio ... and that's how I personalized my el dia de los muertos experience there in 1994. Her soul was blessed by a shaman and for the first time I was at peace over my mother's passing. I had arrived days ahead of time and watched the preparations of the graveyards and met many locals ... one woman, Ediograthia invited me to her family home for the dinner.... I will always remember her and her family, (She was preparing her husband's grave.....) During the daytime of the day of the dead I went to the cemetery and in my pack I had long, long strips of lollipops and I went and sat against the wall and passed the strips of lollipops to the persons on either side of me and within a minute to my right were all the cherry lollipops being enjoyed and to my left was all the grape lollipops... It is one of my most memorable times.... later in my travels I saw the Rolling Stones twice! At the Autodromo... one last thing ... in the evenings leading up to day of the dead I would help visitors bargain with the vendors selling candy skulls and clay statues all around the zocalo in Patzcuro... visitors realized what I was doing and asked me to help them ... I helped many many people, and everyone was happy ... at the end of that night the vendors surprised me by each presenting me with gifts and thanks ... Skull statues... skull vases... candies ... ... viva Mexico !
I also visited Tzintzuntzan...
Commenting for the algorithm 😄
Thank you so much it does help so much!
Dang! This one was super cool! That make up was awesome!
Also, very beautiful ending by Kevin. Your videos just keep getting better through quality of video and also meaningfulness.
Thank you so much Cynthia, we truly appreciate the love! Saludos to baby Emily!
Mooie traditie, mooie versieringen, prachtig

I was in Morelia late October to the 3rd of November! I am bummed I missed you two 😢
Oh no! We would have loved to meet! We are still here in Morelia
Excellent video. I'm Polish American, my wife Mexican American.,(We both Love Chicago by the way". There are many similarities between Polish and Mexican Culture when it comes to honoring deceased ancestors. Check out any All Souls Day videos from Poland. Thank so much, enjoy your videos.
I've heard briefly about the Polish traditions thanks for bringing that up! Aw, a Mexican-American and Polish-American ❤️ is there anything more Chicagoan? 😊
This was real, raw and informative. Thank you for sharing this trip. Find all the colours and arts all very psychedelic. Will you also cover the monarch butterfly migration? Going with my partner to CDMX for the first time in late November but we aren't able to fit an outing to Cerro Pelon in our plans. Hoping to live vicariously through this channel for everything that we miss haha!
Thanks, Aj! We are really hoping we can visit a monarch sanctuary, if all works out, hopefully this upcoming weekend and then a video by the following week. I (Jenny) have been fatigued the last few days with a bad fibromyalgia episode (chronic illness that I usually stay on top of but not always..) so here's to hoping I feel well enough this week! 🤞🏽
Cerro Pelon sounds amazing though (just looked it up, didn't even know about) the beauty of Mexico is there's SO MUCH to explore! Thanks so much for joining us on this journey. Chatting with you via comments has been really motivating today! Appreciate you!
@@EatBailaTravel Hey thanks theres really no rush, you should put your health first. Get well and do what you have to do to explore that beauty in top form! I don't know much about it but the b&b in cerro pelon says the butterfly season begins after the third week in nov in their area, lasting up to Feb. The B&B was started by a PhD Anthropologist and her husband Joel (whose father was a state ranger for Cerro Pelon) in 2014 and has grown rapidly. She has a 40 min talk on the operations uploaded on youtube - "The Plight of the Monarch at the Cerro Pelon Sanctuary” - Presented by Ellen Sharp. It also gave insights into the social dynamics of the small 300 pop town.
The talk mentioned the first monarchs were seen around nov 23rd last year so going so soon may be a bit too early.
@@buttlesschap very cool! I’ll have to check out that video
We’re in Michoacan for one more weeks so I’m hoping we’ll be able to visit the big monarch reserve near Angangueo 🦋
Hi
You both awesome. This video is hilarious. But I am getting bore in Queretaro 😂.
Hi! 😊 How long have you been in Querétaro?
@@EatBailaTravel it’s almost 2 weeks.
Suggest some places to visit solo
@@ManjitSingh-mj6tn Have you been to Peña de Bernal? The climb up the monolith is a fun adventure even solo! We have a video on it.
Wait! What happened after it was all over?! Jenny did NOT look happy, at all! Can't wait for part two!!!!
let's just say.. it wasn't good. Part 2 coming soon!
Hi! Do you have the contact of Ruta de las Animas tour? Thanks for this videoooo
I'm from Pátzcuaro and now live in California. It's messed up that it's a tourist attraction to watch people partake in such intimate family rituals.
It really is.. We’re actually going to discuss this for this year’s video. We won’t be visiting any cemeteries for tourism but we’ll be talking about the impact of tourism on this tradition. Let us know if you have any particular suggestions as we write up our thoughts in preparation for it 🙂 one approach we’ll be talking about is the impact of the movie Coco

hello, What is the safest way to get from Morelia to Patzcuaro?
We took a bus and felt perfectly safe!
Did u party on the island 😊 I was there 2019 it was lit Banda playing all night
We did not get to because of our tour! Next time for sure it looked so fun!
At 9:18, just when you were preaching patience, the lady behind you looked like she had 0 patience left 🤷🏻♂️
After that, a lot went downhill. It was chaotic and unfortunate.
@@EatBailaTravelto tell your truth I think this holiday has been too popular with tourists and feel bad for the native people trying to reach out to their diseased relatives in peace. I felt the same at ztinztunztan with too many of us visitors intruding on their personal space ☹️
Damn you are chula
oh your last name is Quiroga! Do you have any ties to Quiroga, Michoacan??
No, but I have heard about it and want to go. My last name and family originated from Spain. I love watching your show you two do a awesome job.
