The thing about usports is that there are no divisions, meaning that there are D1 level schools and D3 level schools playing against eachother in one circuit all across Canada, making Usports very unbalanced. This is due to there being less unis in Canada.
I think the level of Usports ball is roughly around mid D1 depending on what usports teams we’re looking at. We also have to recognize that usports teams played some pretty top D1 comp this year (oregon, kentucky, unlv). And some of the teams playing this top comp lost by small margins. Im not saying we’re top D1 level but saying we absolutely can’t compete doesnt seem to pain the whole picture to me
Scholarships and facilities don't tell the whole story. USports doesn't try to compete with the NCAA. As soon as some Canadian coaches hear a Canadian player is even being looked at by the Americans they stop recruiting them. Some Canadian coaches will even badmouth a kid who's being recruited by the Americans. I've heard it with my own ears. It's disgusting and it's been like that for decades. How would you feel if you found out some coach was bad-mouthing you behind your back? Would you want to play for them? Exactly.
Also another interesting Canadian basketball fact. Canada has some very highly rated prep basketball schools. I've heard that Canada has more lax rules for "student athletes" than in the states. Both countries have protections for academic "youth sports" in terms of limits a youth has with trainers, coaches, and work out facilities per week. Apparently in Canada those restrictions are more loose. Its how we've had some Canadian talent stay in high school here and we attract international prospects as well
I don’t think anyone is arguing they can compete. Basketball is tiny in Canada. All our best athletes play hockey becusee they have a way higher probability of making money. That’s because hockey is the focus in Canada and that’s where the best players are, so the odds of you making the nhl in Canada are wayyyy higher than the odds you make the nba. It’s like playing soccer in Brazil - it’s THE SPORT. It’s the exact same thing with the nfl and mlb. Yeah you might get a few stars that come from Canada. But we’ll never produce nfl, nba and mlb players like we do NHL players. There’s just so much support for hockey in Canada and kids actually know they have a chance to make it, it feels way more attainable.

Preseason games aren’t a good measure either. Teams are working on different lineups and are playing more guys. They may not be taking it as serious.
