      Put a keyway in the shaft and hub. Have the set screw hold the key not the axel. You are putting torque into the weakest part. If you grounded the axel already it can still be done

    I'll note, train guys are some of the nicest people you'll meet. It's a hobby that's allowed me a lot of opportunity from the people I meet. Of note on wheels, I've avoided set screws. The wheels on my equipment are pressed onto the axles, then have weld behind that. Even at 7.5in gauge (Half the size of this), I've seen wheels wander. A belt and braces approach may help.

    • @zerumsum1640

      Or, alternatively, he could drill a few holes along the seam between the axel and hub, tap them, and put bolts in there. If you do it right it could work, but that's kinda tricky to do with a hand drill. What may be better is to grind a few 'flats' on the axel and key the hub so that the hub is taking the torque on the faces, not the set screw. combine this with a bolt in the end of the axel, some washers (and some loctite), and you can set the depth of where the hub sits on the axel with where the flats end using the shoulder that that'd make.

    • @MrRailroadrunner
      @MrRailroadrunner 2 года назад

      @@zerumsum1640 I reccomend against this. Even with Loctite, I've seen screws on equipment like this back out. Heck, I've had it happen to me.

      @@MrRailroadrunner I mean, with a lock nut (not nylok, just a thinner nut) on a bolt in the middle of the shaft you can get it pretty dam secure. plus, threading direction can help with that. grinders have to deal with this issue and the solution there is make the thread so that the spinning shaft tightens it.

    Have I ever mentioned that set screws are evil? Well they are. Cross-drill the hub and shaft for a roll-pin, tapered pin, or bolt and it'll never come loose in the field. (making a clamp hub is better, but much harder to do without a welder or machine tools)
    Fyi, using brake drums is brilliant. Amazing that they work so well. Should be a lot cheaper to get them finish machined as well.

    A set screw is not going to be permanant enough. Based on my experiece with live steam models, even with the screw in a hole, it will still come loose. You're going to need something more permanant, like a pin, a rivet or welding. Glue is an option, but would probably not be enough on it's own.

    Cross drilling for a pin is likely the better option, but if you grind an aggressive enough flat (like diameter/4) it should be fine with a set-screw and some loctite. I’d drill and tap a circular keyway into the shaft and drum you’d take care of the torque without having to worry about a pin shearing off, and maybe also add a pin to prevent it sliding down the shaft.

    Do you want this to fall off the the track?

  • @echohammer
    @echohammer 3 месяца назад +1

    Dude! Yes! I was trying to build a portable rail cart a couple years ago that could easily be carried, disassembled and fit in the back seat of my car. I managed to build a working prototype but it wouldnt have lasted long term Im sure. The wheels were one of the biggest issues. I wish I had known that Cavalier brake drums would be a good fit! Wouldve saved sooo much time. The other big issue was real tracks have a variance in distance between rails. Especially in abandoned tracks, where I had measured over 3" in variance in some places. So I had to concoct an expandable drive axle. It was rickety af and noisy but it worked. Watching this made me want to finish it...if I ever get the time. Pretty cool man. 👍

    This thing is awesome! It would be awesome if you could create a tutorial of how you made this, because I found abandoned tracks and I always wanted to build a train contraption but never really knew how. This is the first good video I found of somebody making this!

    This is really really awesome, you've given us some very valuable information here and I hope to make use of it with my own railroad someday!

    Do those brake drums have a conical taper to them? That's how actual trains stay on the track. You don't want the flange scraping the rails, that's a last resort really. It might be worth machining a slight taper if there's enough material there. Maybe take some measurements of the wheels that are meant to go on that track. Anyway, cool project! Hope everything works out. Stay safe out there.

    Fun fact: Minecarts exist in real life, and they are used to transport supplies out of mines, by being filled with ore and taken to the surface for refining.
