    At 9:20 this is a irl phenomenon called ‘hunting oscillation’. And in reference with your case. The flanges of the brake drums are hitting the track at higher speeds making the ride quality seem more unstable. The best way to eliminate this is to change the wheel profile of the brake drum to be more conical in nature while tuning the flange-track gap on your set. At high speeds the hunting oscillations become too much for the train and the constant bouncing of the flanges causes sufficient friction in balance with the torque of the motor which gives you this top speed of 26mph. There are some cases where hunting oscillation can derail the train as the repeated bouncing can simply throw your wheels of the track. This also happens with regular trains passenger, freight, tankers, etc.
    Upvote to get @Joel Creates to see this to possibly help his design :)
    More information can be found here (there are 2 useful gifs at the start to demonstrate the effect): en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hunting_oscillation

  • @quinnobi42
    @quinnobi42 3 года назад +638

    the back-and forth bouncing at higher speeds is caused by the angle of the train wheels. The angle is necessary to go around corners properly, but the greater the angle, the more it tends to oscillate at higher speeds. A flatter wheel is better at higher speeds, but can't turn as sharp of a corner.

    • @trainzguy2472

I think it really encapsulates the melancholy of Minecraft, and the fact you kept going and had this experience actually mirrors how building your first track in game can really make you feel like you're finally mastering this world, finally *living* in it instead of just surviving - and from the sounds of how this project went, I would say you went through those very same experiences in the real world. This is actually a pretty simple project. It's mostly structural stuff, the mechanics are as simple as a scooter motor and chain drive to one of the axles, and then a tilt hinge for the non-powered axle so that it won't derail if the track twists. As for wiring, it's just a battery, a motor, an off-the-shelf motor controller and an off-the-shelf servo-tester.

    The wobble is a classic railroad problem. Go look at how regular rail wheelsets are built the solution to your problem is specifically in the tapper on the wheel. The geometry of the wheel helps prevent derailing and controls the speed wobble.

    • @hauntedshadowslegacy2826
      @hauntedshadowslegacy2826 2 года назад +3

      I don't know much about trains/railroads, but I do know rollercoasters. My guess is that the wobble problem stems from the articulating nature of the wheels (so it can go around corners). Am I off? Close enough?

    • @williamhuang8309
      @williamhuang8309 Год назад +5

      @@hauntedshadowslegacy2826 What's most likely happening here is hunting oscillation. Since in a curve, the turning radii of the inner and outer tracks are different, the distance the wheels travel is different. But since the wheels are on the same axle, this would be a problem. Therefore, engineers made the profile of the wheel not flat, but rather with a taper. This meant that the train shifting to the side would account for the difference in radius. This also had the added benefit of stabilising the train since the flanges help keep it centred. However, it seems like the brake drums don't have tapers, so the self-correcting effect is not present. The rails could also be slightly wobbly, and in the video they are quite wobbly. Also the minecart doesn't have suspension which means all the bumps are transmitted into the box...
      From my observations, it also seems like the flanges on the brake drums are tiny, which likely makes it easier for the train to derail. Therefore welding a ring onto the drum to increase the flange would help reduce the number of derailments.
      The minecart only has 2 axles, so it is functionally similar to a singular bogie. Normal trains tend to have two bogies supporting a long carriage. However, it is quite rare to have steerable bogies- vast majority of trains have the axles fixed to the bogie (albeit with some suspension)

I'm sure they'd be more than happy to have you back for open days and such, more fun for you and a little something different for the visitors. Little America seems like a lovely railroad with some lovely locomotives, but it's something I'd be unlikely to stumble across as a UK railfan.

      Not enough of a market to mass-produce them, but maybe build to order? It would be an affordable entry point into backyard railroading, problem is most people don't really have the space for an estate railway like that and there's very few existing 16" gauge lines that are open to people running their own equipment - first off, 16" gauge isn't even a recognized standard, the closest standardized gauge is 15" gauge, and second, most minimum gauge railways won't be willing to let some random person show up with a home-built contraption to run on their line due to safety, liability and the fact that it holds up normal operations.

    fun minecart fact: when it first released it was actually operated by filling it with items and pushing the cart, there was no functionality to ride the thing it was just a very expensive item transport. it would leave a tilled dirt texture and i think until 1.15 or 1.20 it was never changed and you could see the dirt under the flooring with the frontface camera, just one of the many old and weird features in minecraft that have been around since indev and infdev.
    The furnace hopper was also operated by coal for some reason and they never changed it, there is also a command block cart.

    For me? About once a month. There's a miniature railroad club about an hour away from my house. They've got about 1.6 miles of 7.5" gauge track and people bring their own equipment to run there, including actual miniature steam locomotives.

    • @Astrochorius

    • @VestedUTuber
      @VestedUTuber 3 года назад +4

      @@Astrochorius
      They're definitely not toys, but they're nowhere near typical narrow gauge in size either. They're big enough to be ridden while still small enough to be transported in the back of a van or pickup, and they're primarily working scale models of full-size equipment. Standard gauge equipment running on 7.5 inch gauge is a bit bigger than 1/8th scale, while narrow-gauge equipment on 7.5 inch gauge can be as big as 1/4th scale. They're generally powered by small electric vehicle motors running on batteries, gas engines running though either an electric or hydraulic transmission, or live steam running on coal, oil, propane or wood.
      Narrow Gauge is a category, generally ranging from 24 inches to a meter. Anything below 24 inches but above 12 inches is considered "minimum gauge", while anything 12 inches or smaller but still big enough to be ridden is "miniature", with gauges ranging from 3.75 inches to 12 inches with 7.5 inches being the most common.

      Go check out the geometry of actual train wheelsets. His issue lies in the shape of his wheels and how they contact the rail. The wobble like that is a classic railroad problem that got solved with the special geometry of the wheels themselves in the early days if railroading.
