I always have one pair of trainers and they usually live one year (I wear them from April do November). I always thought it’s my fault, I walk funnily or sth. And then I realised that most people on social media who recommend shoes or clothes have 20 pairs of sneakers or jeans (I have 2-3 pairs of jeans) so their opinion about how durable the garment is is useless to me 😂
Yeah, this is so true! I'm totally a 1-2 pairs of shoes a year type of gal. I've gotten lucky and found a few pairs that have actually lasted years of heavy use, but that's the exception to the rule!
I'm currently on study abroad and my top tips are: - Don't think you're gonna be a whole new person. If you are not a gym girlie, don't bring gym shoes. If you are not a going out type of girl, don't bring heels. Pack for the person you are, not the person you wan't to be. - Consider the weather more carefully. I brought 5 T-shirts for autumn/winter in England and 3 jumpers. Just no. - If you have enough time beforehand, track the clothing you wear on a regular basis and then use this for packing. You'll know much better what you are usually wearing. - Try and wear your clothes strategically. I first wear all my light underwear and then my dark ones, because it's easier to get enough for a load of washing this way.
This is such great advice!! Especially “pack for the person you are, not the person you want to be”, oooft I really felt that haha. Will definitely bear in mind these tips even just packing for a few weeks away going forward :)
Oh hey, I can actually contribute to this discussion! I have moved abroad to an internship for a year where I move between 2 very remote Islands and mainland every 2-4 weeks. The 2 islands don't have laundry facilities and have pretty tough terrain so my wardrobe goes through a lot and is quite different but I made some similar mistakes and some different ones: 1. For this length of time expect things to break. I have broken 5 pairs of shoes, 3 pairs of trousers, 2 t-shirts and all of my underwear (bar 2 😅). It doesn't help that my laundry washer is mental and beats the living hell out of many of these items but it does happen, especially when you're using a few items more often. In hindsight this is great as I am replacing these items with better alternatives and will still have room for gifts when I return! 2. Learn to use a needle and thread. I will never be a good sewer but I work outdoors and frankly the few coworkers and animals I work with really don't care if the thread around my crotch is a different colour, why are they looking there so intently anyway?! 3. Clothing, whether you're a wonderful creative (ie Lucy) or not, can really make a difference to your happiness. On the bad days here, changing into clean socks, into your favourite jumper or doing your hair different (like accessorising I suspect) really becomes a treat. When I return from the more remote locations, I have ended up wearing my 2 dresses as they're easy to wear and I feel cute af in them. it really does make a difference to my wardrobe 💁 4. Depending what your plans are, take note of what locals are wearing. I have definitely noticed that it's much more comfortable in this climate to wear what they are wearing and can last longer. It's what a lot of my replacement pieces will be. Of course, consider cultural appropriation and practicality 🙃 5. Have some both good and bad quality items. The good quality items are great comfort and good to grab and go but it's heart wrenching when they break. Conversely it's a nice surprise when bad quality items last longer than expected but you don't feel too down when they go. You start to learn which items aren't worth investing in for you (whites Tees aren't the way) and ones that you know you'll keep. 6. Lucy eluded to it but really think about the ratio of work/lifestyle/occasion clothes you are taking. It's easier said that don't if you don't entirely know on your plans but if you know you'll be in a hot country, don't back 7 jumpers like me 😂 conversely, be open to how you might change over that time period, I've never been a swimmer but actually I've actually just invested in a good quality swimsuit which makes me feel fab and is flattering ✨ If you've made it this far, congratulations 😂👏
I go away a lot for work, usually not for as long as your trip has been, but I'm pretty good at living out of a bag now! Biggest tips are comfy clothing always, a great pair of slip on shoes, birks/crocs etc and ALWAYS black trousers xxx
I traveled to Peru for 6 weeks with just a carry-on suitcase and a backpack. I would highly recommend bringing hair accessories that excite you. I couldn't always update my outfits with clothes, but if I had a bandana or a scrunchie that changed up my look. Also, I brought a janky super thin cashmere sweater that I would layer and it was amazing at keeping me warm but because it was not super fancy or pretty I could take it hiking or anywhere that I just needed a bit more warmth. Lastly, I had a really thin down-jacket that I could fold into itself and this was super helpful when I was really cold. Oh! And my best purchase was a waterproof phone case for filming underwater activities.
I travel long term and live abroad for months at a time, so I'm used to packing light and living out of a suitcase! Very much a 'capsule wardrobe' kind of deal. I make sure *almost* everything goes together and never bring anything that only goes with one or two other things. Lots of pants, socks and bras. Currently I pretty much wear everything over 2/3 weeks, then I wash it all and repeat. I don't get bored too quick because I can mix and match everything. Then every 3 months or so I re-evaluate, take some things out and replace things I haven't worn to much. I like living this way!
I've packed for 2-3 months many, many times (to be in 1-2 places, not to backpack or whatnot), and the thing I think people don't realize is that you have to pack a little bit like you're moving. You don't need as many outfits as you think, but you WILL WANT little creature comforts from around your house, and it's worth it to get creative to bring them. Slippers are a big one - but if for you it's your weird little coffee pot, bring the coffee pot!! For me it's nail polish; I'll bring 8-10 bottles of nail polish just because I have a collection for a reason! Maybe it's a couple of beloved/re-readable books, maybe it's maintenance items that you use every couple of weeks (shoe polish? a de-piller? idk), maybe it's your stuffed animal. But the trick is to imagine what you miss about home when you're on holiday and IF POSSIBLE, bring it. It will save you so much homesickness in the long run.
One thing that I am so glad I did was only bring things which I know I wear or, give the pieces away which I didn’t wear, a few things I brought I told myself if I don’t wear it now I never will. I wish I had this video at the beginning of my 4 months of travelling
Lucy!! I feel like you're killing with the thumbnails recently!! It's also just super satisfying to me that this video and the elf bar video (which I really enjoyed btw, pls keep on making more of this kind of content) have like a similar 〜vibe〜 if you get what I mean - especially with the pink! 🥰
I once went on a 5 day family holiday, and packed my bag with almost entirely socks. Everyone made fun of me... until it rained and everyone's socks got soaked! Suddenly everyone wanted to borrow a pair from me! You can never have too many pairs of socks!
I have been a subscriber since the very start it feels like, always loved your videos, and your persona. I dont know what it is but in this video you just seem SO HAPPY and it makes me so happy! Just a really lovely vibe.
I'm just about to go travelling the world for 5 months and my wardrobe is stressing meeee. Especially because I will be in quite a few climates! But I think this video has given me some great ideas, thank you!!
The overwearing point is so true. For heavy-use items I tend to have 2 pairs (2 pairs of runners, 2 pairs of rain jackets etc). That way they all last longer.
Great tips 🙌 I went travelling for a year and the clothes that needed ironing were the worst thing I packed. The best thing was some cultlery (with a sharp knife) and a Tupperware box 🍎🍉🍊🍍🍏
As someone who lived out of a suitcase from May until August this year, I agree with the black trousers haha - I needed other things. And also, did not need to pack 2 fancy outfits - could have just reused…
I did that for 2 years a while back. Definitely tiring for you and your clothes in the long run. On the good side, it made me appreciate having a stable home and closet so much more (also very grateful I could always stay in a comfortable house or room while moving around, can't imagine what it's like when there is not this kind of security). To add some tips to yours: thermal tops, socks and leggings are a lifesaver and they take no room at all. My slippers were also my beach shoes. I did wear a lots of black but also had some pops of color like a red shirt (still use that one a lot). Got a few pieces from Decathlon (jacket, shoes and fleece), perfect since I lived in the countryside for a fair bit, and they lasted a long time.
Shoes last about 1000km before wearing out (if used for general life). Sounds a lot... But a 20-minute walk to/from work/school will get to that in a year.
I am in the same situation. Currently between homes while I move. The transition period is going to be 1-2 months and I look at my closet and none of it makes sense 😅 I brought soo many weird things that don’t go together which is ironic since most of my closet goes well together! I wish I thought it through thoroughly for sure 😊
Actually it is very important for foot health to not wear the same shoe every day! Different shoes make your feet in the best case use all or at least most of your muscles, whearas just one pair of shoes will make your feet use only the same few muscles while neglecting the others. Ofcourse your feet won‘t have huge problems if they are generally healthy but if you know that you have for example flatfeet you should switch your shoes often. And also wear different types of shoes, one with soft soles, one with sturdy soles. A good addition to the NBs would be vans or adidas supercourt.
Thank you for sharing, Lucy. This is very convenient for me rn since I'm planning travelling around Europe soon. This helped me so much. Love your videos 😍
I’ve been traveling with the same suitcase since mid August, so it’s been 3.5 months? And will keep traveling for two weeks more… I did most of what you regret not doing! Haha
can really relate!! i am studying abroad for one semester and i packed too few clothes… i really didn’t realize how much wearing the same clothes over and over and ‚boring outfits‘ would impact me! and it’s so annoying because now i want to buy new clothes but i have so many at home

Ooh that really resonates with me!
omg! i’ve always blamed myself- thought i walked funny too but turns out i just have 1 pair of shoes for a year!

Lucy can you give us an hair tutorial? I just love the simple way you wear your hair in the first clip!

Not relevant but your hair looks amazing!
Thank god for this, I've moved to Paris and am so shit at packing when I go back home xx
The sexy knickers hanging there for the family to see had me giggling :D
