    I think you missed a bit on the last one. There is another fear that humans have from an early age--that of falling. Showing how high up you are in that way, then making you carefully navigate forward is part of the feeling, too. It primes the player to be in a spooky mood, same as the music, so the spiders seem even spookier.

    In my opinion, the scariest part of Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon was the 5th mansion's "investigation" section. I mean seriously, for all other 4 investigations where completely separate, and not really animated. It blew away expectations when you went to gather information on the king boo. I mean, it was really well done.

    I get a heart attack every time at the ghost jumpscare in luigi's mansion 3.
    You go to the balcony with some flowers, ravens and a telescope. You obviously watch through it and see a big detailed panorama with dark colours. Then, at the PERFECT timing (after 5 seconds or so), a ghost shows up blocking your sight. The developers knew exactly when to make the ghost appear and it's my scariest moment of the playthrough.

      And the King Boo jumpscare in Dark Moon!
      In this game you study these still pictures of scenarios at the mansions, however in one of them you zoom in to king boo and out of nowhere BAM! I had a friend who was playing in the bathroom while I was at his house and I heard him let out a faint noise and asked "Did King Boo trick you?" It works because they're just still pictures so you don't expect it to move, kinda like night 5 in fnaf

    The first Luigi's Mansion in its entirety was a masterclass in generating horror by keeping things unknown. Everything about the game--the setting, the camera angle, the fact that it's starring a character who is traditionally only a sidekick--they were all used to constantly make you feel like you didn't fully know what you were getting into. In my opinion, it worked fantastically.

    For me, the scariest part in the whole trilogy is when you are in the unnatural history museum in lm3 and you walk down the long corridor and after every flash of lightning the skeleton changes. This reminded me of the dinosaur from the wooded kingdom in super Mario odyssey. I hope they scare me that much in the next luigis mansion game.

    • @cassiereno114
      @cassiereno114 2 года назад +2

      I was surprised that wasn't what was going to be mentioned, it actually would've fit a lot better with the flow of the video too because the first part was about the unknown and lightning, an important core to horror movies, then sound which is another core and finally anticipation of a known threat/size.
      In the video though part 3 is just spiders which isn't as broad as the other two, also not everyone is scared of spiders, and it seems that there's less people scared of them nowadays as compared to even a few years ago in large part I think to people being introduced to them via animal lecturers and other videos(like, have you seen jumping spiders? They're too adorable to be scary). Even black widows don't scare me anymore because I see them all the time around my house and know not to mess with them and they certainly wouldn't go out of their way to try to hurt you.
      Now something like an ostrich or a honey badger is different, they have no fear and will hunt you down and mess you up just because they find your existence an annoyance to them.

      Well, there’s Mario Galaxy. Although, besides the Shiverburn thingies, there’s actually not much. Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 are really normal on someone’s first playthrough. You occasionally feel scared, but that’s usually when you might die or an enemy appears out of nowhere. There are secrets, but they aren’t too scary. We even have Beach Bowl Galaxy! A beach one! Nothing goes wrong with those! Just nice, happy music. Seriously, Beach Bowl is upbeat. It’s a beach-themed galaxy. All beach-themed galaxies are happy. You feel happy, and want to explore the ocean. The cheep-cheeps, the shells to help you swim, everything is good. That’s the beauty of beach themes. They always bring jo- Deep Dark Galaxy.
      This. This one, however. It’s very different.
      It unsettles the player with a beach. Fun, right?
      No. It’s horrifying.
      In this galaxy, you go deep in the ocean, and the environment is dark and spooky. No boos needed.
      In fact, there aren’t any undead enemies in this galaxy.
      There’s a shipwreck at the bottom. An increased feeling of dread.
      Luckily, you just fight Kamella, and there’s nothing more. Right?
      Actually, yes. That is it. That’s all this eerie galaxy has to offer.
      Well, except for....
      secrets.
      There’s Gateway Galaxy inside this one. However, there’s what looks like a cork, or stump (I can’t remember.)
      Then,
      the galaxy deflates. It shrinks, making the player feel weird and scared.
      A once comforting place, shrinking into nothing.
      And of course, out of bounds secrets.
      There are many out-of-bounds tricks in this galaxy. Clipping under a chair. A mysterious launch star that takes you to death.
      The inaccessible planets.
      The music too.
      Deep Dark Galaxy is truly scary, and the fact that it’s done with the typically happiest theme, makes it scarier.
      No ghosts or ghost houses are needed.
      In Deep Dark Galaxy,
      you fear what lurks below the surface.

    I thought the beginning of Luigi's Mansion 3, right after the hotel changes from normal to sp00ky, was quite scary too. With the empty, half-destroyed rooms, where a few hours ago you said goodnight to your brother and his girlfriend. I guess the opening section creates a false sense of security, and even though the entire game is made in such a cartoony style, it made an impression on me.

  • @Lizuma
    @Lizuma 4 года назад +4

    I love how creepy the first game is, and Dark Moon is also really creepy at times and is my favorite! In fact, it scares me more than the original did...still creeps me out in some places! That part with the strange music was definitely creepy, but when I first played Dark Moon the creepiness really started to pick up after the first mansion! Random unexplained things moving in the dark (being made even creepier when you realize there is no ghost playing around), really ominous atmospheres and sounds, unexplainable events and occurances (take the Secret Mine for example when that certain strange figure flies across the scenery, and you must wonder if something's about to happen...) and even completely unexpected jumpscares where the game makes sure you are least expecting it did a good job in creeping me out and even startling me in Dark Moon! Overall, it was a fun experience, one of the best experiences with a game I ever had. And its length matched my pace at playing games! Anyone who has played the entire game, Dark Moon, past the first mansion would definitely have to admit Dark Moon had its really dark, creepy moments. But when everyone stops at the first mansion and basically judge the book by its cover, they claim the game isnt scary and never give it a chance to really see what it has to offer. Of course that, along with the huge amount of adventure it contains and the SUSPENSE...it makes Dark Moon my favorite Luigi's Mansion. Even after Luigi's Mansion 3. Especially after Luigi's Mansion 3, actually. 3 kind of disappointed me, though the beginning was REALLY good I must admit. So good, I'm willing to replay the beginning again. But just the beginning. I'm surprised you couldn't find anything creepier to mention than a mere spider room. Really? Thats all you could find? When I went into a room full of spiders, I didnt have a problem flashing them and just being on my way, simple. The tiny little pests arent what make a Luigi's Mansion game scary. I thought you were going to mention that really ominous beginning I enjoyed, just as ominous as Dark Moon can get later on! (I can even make a whole list of the really creepy parts of Dark Moon. As you might expect, most arent a part of the first mansion...but past the first mansion, things do get good if thats what someones looking for).

    • @t00nedd00d
      @t00nedd00d 2 года назад

      Dark Moon's ghost themes are the scariest imo
      Some of them are like the original; kinda unsettling when you first hear it, but nothing scary
      But others are less cartoony and genuinely frightening, and it made me tense up
      Even with those themes though, there's still other tracks that are so ominous and if you were to show someone who've never played the game without telling them where it came from, they wouldn't be able to tell you
      The garage and antechamber are some of the creepiest tracks I've ever heard (there's more but I forget the names)
      There's something about them that gives me unease when playing; a sudden sense of tension which isn't as straightforward as the other moments in the game, jumpscares are a good example of that
      Jumpscares have a source of the scariness but those tracks don't have a clear source; we have no clear idea what's making those noises other than just speculating
      Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is underrated and holds a lot of creepiness, glad to see someone agrees

    Luigi's Mansion is pretty unique game imo, and does a good job of putting Luigi in the spotlight.
    I feel Luigi's Mansion is the most creepy one, Dark Moon was a bit more cartoonish, buy is respectable and does a great job at certain parts, and 3 did a good job of returning to the first one, while keeping the cartoonish look from Dark Moon.

    Luigi's Mansion 1 and 3 are such excellent games. In some ways, I truly believe 1 is the best - so atmospheric, such minimal music, ghosts quietly humming the main tune when the lights are off, out of site but ever present. And once the lights turned on, they STAYED on, giving you permanent safe rooms.
    3 is probably the "best" game, as it has a good mixture of creepy and kooky. And King Boo looks freaking sweet, definitely Nintendo's scariest villain. Bowser is big and intimidating, classic great bad guy. King Boo, however, is truly terrifying, exuding and aura of evil, the likes of which Bowser just doesn't come close to.
    2 fell short, in my opinion. Good game, but inferior to 1 and 3.

    about the pupil experiment:
    pupils get bigger if you love something or feel comfortable
    pupils get smaller if you're tense and worked up
    that's why (for example) in anime, when a character goes full psycho, their pupils get unrealistically small (because that happens irl too)
    also, when you're high, (high, not stoned) your pupils get big af too

    Another lesser example of the music, not as scary or anything, but the dark moon boss where the leadup was climbing up stairs. the music was simplistic, consisting of a single rising and dropping melody, but as you went up the stairs, it got more intense, and one mistake sent you back to the bottom. Youre 90% of the way up, and SHINK, you slide all the way back to the bottom. It wasnt scary, but it was intense, man. Also that boss at the top was the objectively lamest in the series.

    • @PrincessCarmel
      @PrincessCarmel 4 года назад +1

      The best example of the more intenser (?) music though, isnt jaws, or anything else in movies or even a horror game. it is 100% sonic drowning music. Just thinking about it sends shivers down my spine. It starts off rather quiet, getting faster, faster, more instruments, faster, quicker still, more instruments getting louder as youre frantically trying to resurface, faster, youre getting so close, you can see it, just gotta get to the spring, and finishing the tune buildup reminiscent of a day in the life by the beatles, it stops and you immediately die. the end.

    I actually wished they kept Luigi's mansion a bit more jumpy and scary. The first game scares me even now when I'm much older. And even when I was younger and watched my Brother play Dark Moon, the game wasn't AT ALL scary to me.. And that makes me a bit disappointed since the point of Luigi's Mansion was to make you feel on edge and constantly fearful. The next two Luigi's Mansion games weren't really like that. I was just sad that unique little feeling that made the whole game so special was taken away..

    Also but the player's choice version of this game in Europe was released in late 2003, and the version you actually have in your hands in the video, is the version released after mid 2005 !
    4:40 that's not 12 years later !!!
    Luigi's mansion 2 was released in march 2013 worldwide, and Luigi's mansion 1 (as i said previously) was released in late 2001 in USA and japan, and in march 2002 in Europe...
    So 11 years later !
