Hurricane Douglas is getting very close. It will either hit us or pass very close to Maui. After I finish finalizing this video, I've got to head out to the store to get water and food for two weeks. These hurricanes usually dissipate when coming from the direction it's coming from however, it's always good to be prepared.
Also, I've been a bit out-of-it in the previous few videos. I've been quite stressed out and under meds from the operation I recently had but I THINK I'm normal now. Whatever that is :p

@@worltrader5948 This Seiko 5 in the video reports +8 per day so far. The 4R36 movement's rating is the manufacturer rated acceptable daily variance. Like any automatic watch, environmental variables affect accuracy. You're not familiar with the automatic watch world, huh? The point is, we like wearing tiny machines with gears and springs that's inside shiny bits. If I need to wear something super accurate, all i'd need to do is wear my 15 dollar Casio which is tremendously more accurate than any Rolex lol.
They call the SKX007 Black Boy and 009 Navy Boy so I’m assuming this is the Solid Boy due to the solid bezel.

I just bought one and I love it!!! It's smart looking, has a nice weight to it, looks more expensive than it is! Fits my small wrist perfectly! I got mine for $225.00. your videos are entertaining and different. Throughly enjoyable!!!

I almost bought the gray model. But your video showed me the splendor of the blue dial. Just bought it now. Thanks for the look -- and for a funny puppet show. :-) (The SRPE53 is now available on amazon for $180.)
It almost gives the look of a BB 36/41 with the dial. Without a dive bezel the look is different. Straps will definitely give it a better look and feel on the wrist. I like the look of the watch, and drilled lugs are awesome. 👍
I'm guessing "Solid Boy" means solid, non-rotating bezel.

Solid Boi... They had me at the name!
Your title intrigued me, "Whats up with this new Seiko watch". In the UK What's up means what's wrong. "What's up with you" is confrontational and suggests you are not at all happy with something. That said I am a big fan of Seiko watches, especially the Seiko 5s. I had one for ten years and it has never let me down. This version looks good and I like it.
Same thing in America if you say it in a condescending tone. But otherwise it just means what’s going on as in “hey what’s up”

I like them well enough to pick one up down the road and I’m a sucker for a good blue. Won’t be the J model though; too spendy. Good luck with hurricane. Be safe.

I just got the 53 and it looks fantastic. The only issue I found with it is the gap between the crown and the case seems too wide. All of the pictures and videos I've seen of the watch it appears that there is really no gap so I assume mine has a quality control issue. Anyone else have this issue?
I just bought it. It is nice. Simple but elegant. Just one thing. It’s small it looks on my 18cm wrist like a toy.
don't care about the bracelet BUT the new Seiko bracelets from the 5s are actually great and comfy and don't plick your hairs , only sucky thing is the 5kx one would've been amazing if it tapered more but at least it has the same end links style , would rather wear then the strap codes extended links garbage making the watch length way too long and uncomfy

I think the "v" shape bracelet phenomenon is due to the clasp underneath which runs along and abruptly stops. Appreciate the content. Good stuff. New subscriber

Thank you! The first reviewer to say it, same dial, same hands as the 5KX in a smaller case...Easy, almost lazy! Why not show some creativity. If I did by one or two 5KXs, why would I want one of these???? Oh yeah...they removed the dive-style bezel! Yawwwwwwn. Big fan of you and the boyz!
It’s got a little bit of everything for everybody and it succeeds in that sense, but I can see where more experienced hobbyists might have complaints.
Very pretty looking watch. Not a spec monster but it’s got charm. The anthracite dial version calling to me but I’m trying my hardest not to spend more money on watches lol. Already bought like 5 watches this year, yikes!

the hand size has been decreased on this model in line with the decrease of case dimensions from the "5kx" models released last year. Style is the same, but I think these 2020 "solid boy" models have a thinner handset. I'm no expert on these, but have seen this stated in other reviews. Thanks for a great review. Love these new ones, especially the black with the gilt hands and markers
Yeah hands are thinner than the 5kx. The dial is also slightly bigger than the old model since the bezel takes up less real estate.
I got this for work. Paid $160 after shipping and tax. Japanese version. Honestly I think it’s fantastic for the value. I think the specs are more than appropriate. I have watches that cost over a grand that have a 38 hour power reserve for example. Overall aesthetic of the watch are enjoyable to my eyes. No screw down crown is a bummer but I am not swimming at my work place.
Where did you get it for that price? And how do you assure it is the Japanese version? Recently picked up the gray version through Macys for $170
@@jasonle2289 eBay, it was a store display model. Made in Japan is listed at the bottom of the dial. $170 is still a good price.

Curt, I think you'd be liking this watch a lot more if you'd paid less for it. It's still new and buzzy, so the price is still at MSRP, but that'll be going down before you know it. Thanks for the review. The videography really shows off that dial!

What up Curt! Feels like it's been a long time bro! So I agree with you and Uncle Jimmy that there's something to plain and benign about this watch to justify its price. I'd get an Orient Mako II with a blue dial for half the cost of this if I was in the market, but you're right I'm just into weirder stuff watch wise lately. It's a great solid starter though and will probably shine on some more interesting straps, if it was around $200.
Hope the surgery you had was nothing serious, and better to go thru it now than when the world was opened back up fully. At least you're not missing out on much, like the rest of us.
The local bar is open again and yeah I've been hanging there on their patio a few times a week, but I am avoiding visiting my folks because it's probably not the smartest thing to do. The clasp is too short, that's why it does that weird thing with it not sitting comfortably. It's a typical Sucky Seiko™ feature and it on my Samurai bracelet too.
How do you think this one stacks up w the SNKE51 that you reviewed a while back? (Keep in mind the ~$100 difference) Thanks!
I do like the uncluttered look of this one, as well as its blue dial. Remarkable how one's tastes evolve. A few years ago I was heavily in divers and chrono territory, and now I find myself looking at Aquaterras and the sort. Almost pulled the trigger on a TISSOT GENTLEMAN POWERMATIC 80 SILICIUM yesterday, also with a blue dial. The Seiko made me think of it immediately; the Solid Boy has good looks but its specs are a bit disappointing for the price... or are they?
You should pull the trigger! I'm getting +8 seconds/day with this Seiko. Not too bad. I had a 65 dollar Seiko 5 that was +2! I got lucky. I've also had one that was -20. hah! Seiko pumps these out without regulating them it seems. Thankfully, it can be done relatively easily. It just takes patience, a bit of knowledge and good practices. I think that this watch is a bit too expensive for what you're getting but it IS nice!
@@minitwatch Seiko surely doesn't regulate them but mine (Sary055, Samurai, Turtle and a few other NH35) are all performing quite well. And never any problems with them either, unlike 2 ETA's I have (solved now tho). But you know, being European and all, still prefer the Swiss, for a few euros more. I really like that Tissot ;-)
@@johandebondt5749 Lol. Two of my Steinharts with ETA movements had to be sent back because they just BROKE. But, once they were fixed (I didn't opt for replacement), they run perfectly. I like swiss too! They just seem...smoother to my eyes. Even compared to Asian 28,800 movements.
@@minitwatch In my case, it was a Khaki King and my CombatSub Goldeneye... once you have them fixed, they run better than ever indeed ;-)

I'm with you on the new logo. Not awful, but when I look at the 5kx's they just look cheap and aesthetically don't look like they have much quality to them. When I look at the old skx I would get excited and want one right away, but the new ones just look like the somewhat similar very cheap editions of the skx that Seiko would make that you would see on like page 8 of Amazon when you searched for a 007J1 if that makes sense?! Also, stay safe with that storm!!

Hi there, quick comment: the minute hand is not identical. Very close, but not identical. The bezelless version has a slightly slimmer minute hand.

You can slightly try bending the fold over to the contour of your wrist to fix the weird angle mentioned.

As Seiko continues to attempt to adjust their pricing, this piece really finds itself in no man's land... It feels like the Seiko's I want to buy right now are $500-$600 bucks.... And at that price point, you are right there with some Swiss experiences, where there are no compromises....
But, I have to disagree with Uncle Jimmy. It's not "garbage"..... I'm not sure what this watch wants to be.... It evokes diver feelings, but is definitely not a diver.... If it was a dress watch, I feel like I want something more than plain round circles for markers.... I don't know... Is this the modern Seiko impression of a "sports" watch??? Am I supposed to wear this when I go to Thailand, and I don't wanna wear the Omega, so I wear this thing, because I don't care what happens to it???? I don't know....

Pretty watch and nice review! Regarding the buckle situation you mentioned at around 10:15, you may want to try to change the orientation of the buckle, ie swap the bracelet/ rotate the buckle so that the Seiko wording is upside down. This helps on my SKX

Very nice watch . I know the design is textbook Seiko , but why fix it if it’s not broken . This watch looks like a dive watch with a plain bezel . Maybe they put a bezel and call it another diver model .

Hi, I own the green SRPD61 and love the green dial but I have a small wrist and would much prefer these new 40mm cases but unfortunately they didn;t offer that same dial on these SRPEs. So I was thinking if I could fit the SRPD dial on this new 40mm cases. Do you know if the dials are interchangeable? I know you mention that they are the same but I was wondering if you meant design wise only or if the dimensions are also exactly the same.

Have you seen the new Seiko Divers? They are pretty interesting. I got the SBDC101, its much close to an actual 62MAS then the SBDC051 was. They also just released a 6105 inspired watch too.

i dont understand why their best watches are so rare and then discontinued, and their more popular ones are mediocre -ish.. Perhaps its out perception. The more rare, the more we lust for it, i dont know

I love your reviews, they're very entertaining.
This watch is nice but I wish they'd drop the SKX face & hands, they seem to be overkill with the SKX thing, even the case is very much SKX without the diver bezel. Seiko need to concentrate on originality rather than trying to cash in on it's popular past product; or just update the SKX, as they probably should have done instead of releasing the inferior 5kx (lower case lettering intended!). I've lost a lot of interest in Seiko of late & now buying alternatives. I don't care much for their regurgitated watches, give me originality! My final thoughts; Seiko make a good watch but now seem to be lacking in ideas, originality (mentioned previously) & price increases for much less for your money. Will they do the same to the Turtle, Samurai etc? Turn these great watches into downgraded Seiko 5s? You're losing it Seiko! I think watch enthusiasts will probably move on & find better for about the same price.
I feel like they got new leadership that's only focusing on profits and not on the craft itself. They're playing the safe game these days however, I'll bet they come out with different models using this case. Thank you, Gary!

got the blue version, it does feel like a 38mm similar to my vintage TAG professional, the bracelet it's actually very nice and comfortable kina like a mate color. no solid end links tho.
