  • This film was produced by Ana Godinho De Matos, Chameleon Eye and MELA Associate as part of the Balsall Heath in Conversation artist-led digital storytelling project. Local people were asked to tell their stories about living in a diverse neighbourhood like Balsall Heath and also to imagine the Moseley Road as a new intercultural meeting place.

Spent my primary school years in Balsall Heath. Lived in a large flat above the TSB bank (not sure if still there now) on Moseley Rd. Next door to us was Stan the grocer (Balsall Heath's own Arkwright although he wasn't 'Open All Hours' - shut at 6) before he retired and his business became a Tandoori restaurant. Playing football in the garden while the fine smells of Tandoori cuisine was wafting over was a challenge. The newsagent across the road from us was a community focal point. The very friendly owners (I went to school with their son Imran) were lovely people. A shame when the husband died (mid-30s too). I went to Tindal school first before doing my last three years of Primary education up in Moseley at Park Hill. We then moved to Kings Heath before returning to Scotland when I hit adulthood. This video brought back some memories. Thank you.

We had a bed sit in 1975 , my husband and myself and there was Dennis in another bed sit and Taffy in another one and we paid £5 a week each to our Asian landlords who shared the downstairs rooms . We were all upstairs . So the landlords , who were good to us , collected £15 a week off us (a lot back then ) and 2 of them had full time jobs while one stayed home , and they were saving for a business and they’re probs millionaires today ! I often remember them
