    The photography of Janet Mendelsohn
Presented in association with Flatpack Film Festival
This exhibition was on show at Ort Gallery from the 10 March - 28 April 2018. This video was created by Sofia Chen and Zoe Turner and captures the stories collected whilst the exhibition was on of local residents current and past.
In the late 1960s American filmmaker and photographer Janet Mendelsohn spent several months documenting the everyday life of Balsall Heath, as part of her studies at the University of Birmingham. These images are a vivid record of the community at a time of rapid change, and many of the streets depicted were demolished soon afterwards. The exhibition visually explores a social housing crisis, poverty, migration and the experience of childhood in the area.
Building on a brief pop-up exhibition in summer 2015, Ort Gallery now present a selection of these amazing images in the neighbourhood where they were taken. The exhibition was supported by a resource room exploring some of the stories behind the pictures, and a programme of events and screenings culminating in the 12th Flatpack Film Festival (13-22 April 2018).

Spent many a good night in Balsall Heath. Some great blues parties back in the day, Trafalgar rd and Woodstock rd. And a special mention to Daddy Stones from Stereo classic who used to play above the Caribbean food shop on Moseley rd. Good times.

I worked at James Harper stationery on the Moseley Road early Eighties. Good times, Cannon Hill pub and Calthorpe park in the evening. Don’t think it’s the same now though. Never any troubles back in the day. Cycled everywhere.

As a poverty-stricken mature student I lived in Ombersley Road Balsall Heath circa 1973 whilst attending my 3rd & final university at the Byzantine Institute. My desk was a ping-pong table, spacious & wonderful. I'm pleased to say I now own a magnificent Italian villa, the cash for which began in a bookshop started in Harborne - Blitzgeist Books & Boutique. I was outed by Mil Intel as a super-genius [IQ 250-300] & so won a maths scholarship. Last year a DNA test confirmed my unknown father was a Jewish cuckoo who visited my mother's nest in Sept 1942. She never mentioned his name, but hinted he was one of a shooting-party at Clifton Hall, Beeston, Notts. I found out my grandfather provided "ladies of the night" for kings George V & VI & placed unwanted children elsewhere. The only other thing I enjoyed in Balsall Heath was the Asian food & 9 or 10 of the best meals of my life were at Sparkbrook [= Lahore House, which we invariably called The Whore House].

Where is Balsall Heath? Is it in the Birmingham area?
