Only reason I had one raised (I let him go back into the Wild when he was able to) bc my cousin was cutting down tall trees near his moms house and he didn’t obviously know that one had a momma raccoon and babies in it so when he cut the tree and it fell it killed the momma and he was sad that it happened but he didn’t know that they were in that tree. He kept two of the babies and I had one and a friend of ours had one. We raised them and set three back into the Wild when they were ready to be on their own. The fourth one was very hell bent on staying so my aunt kept her and she was her pet.

I hope that people will learn from our experience and will try to save their own wildlife before it's too late.. otherwise you might get to a point in time where even a racoon is a rare sight.

A few years ago a buck in my area ran into a woman driving and impaled her. Then there's the ground hogs. Step in their hole and sprain your ankle. And those people driving near moose, I don't want to think of it. That black bear next door would probably take off if we ran into each other but the people out west in the USA with the grizzly bears that's scary. But, yes, you are right we should appreciate the wildlife.
I think that English people have a greater tendency to appreciate their wildlife. Around here, the word "vermin" is stamped on most of our common wildlife. However, people will likely never be able to eliminate raccoons and opossums without a campaign to do so. They have actually increased in population due to human civilization and are taking advantage of their superior ability to cope compared to their enemies, like coyotes and bobcats.
Raccoons will never be a rare sight for better or for worse. Numbers have exploded as urbanization has risen in the US and elsewhere and I doubt that will slow any time soon. I'm fairly certain that this holds true for opossums, skunks and squirrels among others. The UK seems like it just doesn't have as many mammals that are as suited for urbanization.

I was in shock , i saw a buck , pheasants, hedgehogs, foxes , all sorts of birds and badgers dead in the road . I've traveled to many states in the usa and I've never seen any of the roads I've traveled with that amount of animals ran over dead and left for roadkill.
