    Some REAL instruction on nutrition people can understand. I hope you do more of these. I myself know a good bit about all this and was on a WFPB (Whole Food Plant Based) diet before I took on meat eating again for the superior protein for Starting Strength.
    I was extremely happy with my diet, but I was also disciplined enough to know what I was doing and to cook my own food, which was really delicious every single meal.
    I cured a lot of ailments (not considered "chronic" I guess) with my diet and my doctor told me whatever I was doing, just keep doing it. One of those things was getting off my blood pressure meds for good (in my 30s). I'm now 46 and hypertension never came back.
    Thanks for being unbiased and not political or religious about the whole vegan vs meat eating thing. It doesn't help anything as you are obviously aware.

    Thank you for taking the the time to motivate us on our journey with your research. I am well into my eighth decade and, thanks to your encouragement and insight, am still lifting. The Barbell Prescription book is superb. I still coach at a local high school in San Francisco.

    Loved Dr. Sullivan's video. Salt in processed food is way on the heavy side. But don't forget that the inverse is true. If you are cooking all your own meals and avoiding restaurants, you might not be getting enough sodium and if you are never adding any. The more you sweat, the more you need, too. Sodium and potassium are used to process water in the body. Iodized table salt also has iodine which a lot of people are defiicient in.

      Maybe...but I never once saw a patient with hyponatremia that didn't have an underlying cause other than diet (dehydration, renal dz, polydypsia etc). In the West, there's no trouble getting enough Na. But you can lose electrolytes in hot weather and during exercise, no question. Electrolyte-containing rehydration solutions are good stuff in that setting.

    The DASH diet only ended up including meats because they feared few people would eat DASH if they used the superior diet: *a completely plant-based one.* This was explicitly stated by the authors. This presenter certainly should've mentioned this.

    • @HAL-dm1eh
      @HAL-dm1eh 6 лет назад +6

      Well, they're right. Many people are not going to stop. I ate plant based for a long time before I took on eating meat again for Starting Strength. I needed the superior protein for it. I could eat A LOT of beans and protein powders, but after trying everything I could I could not digest the beans or powders well (tried for over a year, with enzymes and probiotics).
      There are ideals and then what is practical. If we want to change what happens in the mainstream, we have to think in practical terms, because a majority of people are never going to live up to ideals.

      It is immoral that doctors are recommending the dash diet instead of a vegan diet. Their job is to save lives by providing the best advice; It is up to the people to decide to what extend they need to follow the advice. With dash diet recommendation many people will think that it is the end all be all diet and vegan diets are plain unnecessary; while in actuality vegan diet might help them even more.
      I can't believe you are not able to reach the protein requirements on a plant based diet. It is so easy. How much are you aiming for?

    • @sullydawg
      @sullydawg 6 лет назад +5

      Many, many people are perfectly healthy on diets that incorporate animal protein, which has always been part of human nutrition. And no, there's nothing immoral about not recommending vegan diets to all patients, and I find your assertion that doctors are ethically bereft for not following YOUR beliefs objectionable. The complexity of nutritional choices and their rationale (both scientific and value-based) were indeed addressed in the video.
      If you want to go vegan, that's great. Seriously. There are some good arguments for it. But from a health perspective it is NOT the only option, and the failure of the video to comport with your personal values and beliefs isn't the video's fault.

    • @albinjose7464
      @albinjose7464 6 лет назад

      sullydawg It's not my belief. They did not even consider a vegan diet while planning their recommendations even when they clearly knew that reduction in animal products helps in control of the disease. Why was whole food vegan diets not included in their recommendations? Because they thought it might be impractical. They are obstructing the truth and it's immoral.
      They have stated that a plant based diet is superior. Still recommends the dash diet. Even the speaker here doesn't state that fact too.

    • @sullydawg
      @sullydawg 6 лет назад +2

      Now your'e getting it. I DO, in fact, recommend the DASH diet or something similar to people with hypertension who, like most of us, have no interest in excluding animal protein from our diet. For those who wish for any reason not to eat meat or animal protein, I respect their decision and recommend the assistance of a nutritional professional to ensure that they are getting all the nutrients they need. But I explicitly RECOMMEND ANIMAL PROTEIN for those omnivorous people in their sixth decade and beyond who wish to increase their muscle mass and strength.
      And that includes MEAT.
      Let me say this again so that there is no mistake: I stand by EVERYTHING I say in the video. I recant NOTHING. I feel compelled to concede or add NOTHING.
      More to this: I recommend that hard-training masters EAT MEAT, fish, poultry, eggs and dairy. In fairly generous amounts. I recommend that as a coach, I recommend that as a physician, and it's what I do myself. And while I appreciate your concern for my ethical integrity, I find myself quite moral, thank you very much.
      Clearly this is all very much to your dismay, as you have communicated with abundant clarity. But here's the good news: YOU can eat whatever YOU want.
      See how that works?

    With all due respect, you are a little off on saturated fat.
    Saying "High fat meats are consumed by Americans in great abundance" is misleading.
    The truth is, Americans eat more carbohydrates than fat. And the fat we eat, is often sourced from some kind of vegetable oil like Soybean, Canola, Cottonseed, Corn, etc...
    Beef consumption is way down per capita only to be replaced with white meat from chicken. Chicken consumption has skyrocketed and yet society is fatter.
    50% of calories from fat is a great amount of fat for men. Eggs, a slice of bacon, 1 tbsp butter, EV olive oil, avocado, and a grass-fed burger is a great way to keep fat high, T levels up, and you won't get fat or clog arteries.
    Carbs should come from sweet potatoes and some fruit, no grains, even "wholesome" whole grains.
    Be ruthless about removing "Industrial seed oils" and you'll see a long term difference. Sadly this form of fat is so prevalent in the American diet but we continue to blame bacon, butter, and beef.
