  • The Hamilton Ontario Accordion Club featured a favorite special guest of theirs, virtuoso concert accordionist, John Lettieri on Nov. 8/18. John performed a good variety of numbers on acoustic and digital accordion. Enjoy! Check John out at www.lettierimusic.com

Some piano rolls of Joplin were found that answered your question: you swing Maple Leaf Rag and play it at an easy tempo. In Joplin's own words, notated in the music, "Not Fast!" You're playing it about twice as fast as intended. Ragtime is dance music, and it really helps to see how people dance to it.

The cadence and beauty of the piece is not appreciated due to the excessive speed of execution, many musicians believe that playing ragtime is to do it at full speed, listen to the old recordings of its author and appreciate the tempo and cadence so peculiar and beautiful that They have those compositions. I definitely don't like it, I'm also an accordionist and I don't like speed competitions.

That's way too fast and as a result not accentuated. It's that old accordion problem - demonstrating technic sacrifying the music.

I agree..... I've played the accordion off and on over 70 years....and I still recall my best instructor (a member of the US Navy band) telling me "slower is better"
