    In a worm bin if you freeze your food inputs before you add them the fruit flies and fungus gnats can't survive the freeze. Add more dry bedding when you add food to absorb and balance moisture and c:n ratio.

    Hi Jeremy, any chance you can make an update video to the “Intro to Vermicompost” episode you made last July setting up the Urban worm bin? I’m contemplating setting up my own Urban Worm bin as I continue down this rabbit hole that is sustainable no-till gardening, and it would be awesome to see an update on your bin several months later. Any tips on harvesting and maintenance efforts would be insightful also. Appreciate all the support you provide us Newbies in Virginia as we are coming up on our 1-year anniversary of legalization in July. I think the reason the roots die when you start with an air stone, and then it fails is because the roots become dependent on it, because the colony of roots is much larger and supported by the extra oxygen when that extra oxygen source is cut out a portion dies off. Just a theory or bro science haha but makes sense😊

    Jeremy - Thanks for all the content and transparency. I've been following your series since the beginning and you helped me transition 100% away from salts. I've tried organics in the past and failed numerous times. You taught me indoor organic gardening and I've been hearing raving reviews from my first organic harvest (Blue Dream). Thank you for all that you do for the community. Question: Can you talk about how to deal with overwatering and how to deal with pythium if you get it in a living soil container. This has happened both in Earthboxes and larger fabric containers. I know you'll say prevention is #1, but what happens if you do get it? I've transitioned almost 100% to 3.0 soil, but if overwatered on smaller plants, it almost immediately gets rot. If there's still a living plant in the soil, is there a good way to recover and get rid of pythium? The best thing I've been able to do so far is to let the pot completely dry out between every watering which allows the root system to develop, but I find the pot to still be sensitive to overwatering even after this happens. Does pythium remain in the soil even if you let it dry out several times, to the point of mild wilting? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Just an idea, but bubblers in the form of little air pump tubes in the bottoms of earth box resivours and have the pump tubed up higher than the resivour so it doesn’t backflow. When you said intense results I was intrigued! Hopefully it doesn’t effect microbes with too much oxygen and losing some of those more anaerobic leaning facultative microbes

    Plant success organic mycorrhizae 3/1/2, and happy frog bulb food 3/8/8 are both good amendments for a living soil/super soil mix. Also, chitin from insect frass, shrimp and crab meals, etc and diatomaceous earth mixed into soil ( use very little) also helps with fungus gnats. Neem meal does too I just don't like the smell lol

    FAQ QUESTION, If I use living soil in four 20 gallon fabric pots for one or two cycles and then upgrade to a 4x4 raised bed, how do I reuse the 80 gallons of soil from the four 20 gallon pots if I won't be using those pots anymore. I plan to get either two take and bake kits or the coots mix for the 4x4, so I won't necessarily need the soil from the 20 gallon pots. Can I mix the four 20 gallon soils together and then get a soil test and amend it and reuse it over time for seedlings and transplants? How do you reuse no-till soil when not using that pot size anymore but still want to reuse the soil? Sorry if that's a dumb question but I'm brand new to no-till living soil. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it.

    What's the soil depth limit for homemade wicking beds (like Earthboxes)/ How far up will the water rise from the wicking action?

    • @comfortablynumb9342
      @comfortablynumb9342 2 года назад

      @MD Buds I have homemade wicking beds with a mix of sphagnum moss, lava rocks for aeration, and organic amendments. I cut the tote lids to fit 3" above the bottom for the reservoirs. I cut the corners of the lids off and put landscape fabric on top of the lids and dipping into the corners so the soil doesn't fall in the water. So my soil is probably 15 inches deep but I don't have a layer of scoria. My boxes are deeper than the Patio Pickers boxes I bought. And they seem to work. Or do you think I'll have problems?

    • @comfortablynumb9342
      @comfortablynumb9342 2 года назад

      @MD Buds thank you for the help! I think my homemade wicking beds are about as deep as they can be, about like you said. So far they're great. It's good to know that bigger won't help. Walmart has a nice looking 4' long wicking bed but it's too deep. I guess it would be fine if you didn't put too much soil in them. I thought about getting one or two for mom's veggies. We're using kid's pools and fabric pots to bottom water outside and it works with 5 gallon pots. Oil pans from the dollar store work too.

    Sometimes companies put Styrofoam prills in potting soil and it looks like perlite but its not. The Styrofoam floats but perlite does not. Especially if you put perlite in soil its not going to float because it gets dirty very fast and that makes it heavy. If you see floating white prills in some potting soil its probably a cheap styrofoam filler. Not real perlite. Its a cheaper additive they just add it to trick you and make you think its got perlite in it. Perlite is really good but Syrofoam is not good in soil.

    after I spray neem, I run hot water through my sprayer, including the nozzle. This pushes out any residual neem that may stick around after I'm done spraying. I've done this for years and have never had a clog.

      Fuck neem man if you have spider mites invert plants in wash basin and spray luke warm water to underside of plant, I have always had success doing such. However best thing is just keeping everything sterile and never reuse dirty pots and avoid using any supplies or equipment you use outside

      @@bigrob6076 I actually just use neem to deter grasshoppers outside. I have one pot that's had the same soil in it for literal decades, since the 80s, never had a problem there. This guy was saying he had a problem with neem clogging up his sprayer, and I suggested flushing with hot water immediately after use to prevent it in the future.

    Anyway you would be willing to do a controlled test on toxicity and deficiencies and what they look like and how to fix them using your products..and would be the best way to make a tea for different stages of your plants what ingredients to use in veg and bloom that won't burn the plants

    Soil testing at 7.4 pH. How do I lower. Should I start pretreatment and pH the water. Out of the tap it's around 7.4. can I make my soil process this down to the ideal soil pH? Lime or any other additive? Experiencing very slow growth. I don't have the cash for your amazing products right now.

    I’ve been experimenting with different cover crop mixes, what’s your opinion on using something like a daikon radish sprouting seed and mulching it relatively fast or culling it back to prevent it from fruiting? They seem to sprout quickly in comparison to others I have used and have large deep penetrating tap roots to help break up the soil. What’s the thought behind the specific seeds that you have chosen to use in the bas cover crop? Thanks

    Where can i go to ask you questions lol I really want to know what I'm growing in ? I'm growing in royal gold tupur, wormcasting, perlite and Dr earth dry amendments. 2 tbsps per gal in 5 gal fabric pots. Ph at 6.4 and watering with liquid seaweed and molasses every 2 weeks. Is this considered a living soil ?
    And should I keep ph-ing or should I stop as I see some people don't ph in living soil ? Any advice would help thank you in advance

    When topping with amendments how do you find ratio of your end topping. Like if I used a 12-0-0 for nitrogen then another amendment is 0-12-0 and a 0-0-24. In equal parts does that make a 4-4-8 in theory?
