I have a strange fascination watching these guys. If you took them out of this context, Michael seems like he'd be a cool guy to hang with, but Christian would just be a guy you'd eventually want to punch in the face. Michael is humble and seems genuinely interested in the world, but Christian presents as a guy who's half-listening to any conversation, while simultaneously trying to think of comments he can make or stories he can tell that make HIM look good. Michael could just chuck it all and go do something else creative, but Christian will always be trying to sell you something, and wishing he was rich enough to live the aspirational lifestyle he's pimping.
There's a saying in the Italian clothing industry: "the grandfather founds the firm, his sons run the firm, his grandsons destroy the firm." I read this in a book by Silvia Yanagisako, but was reminded of it repeatedly through your conversation (and the original Hodinkee video). Love this content, which is partially about watches but much more deeply about legacies, generations, wealth and even parenthood. What kind of patrimony does a rock star leave? What about a watchmaker? Brilliant stuff, some of your best convos to date
Funny how Ben was so confident the Ed Sheeran G Shock was going to sell out and a week later I'm getting emails and targeted ads with it still being available.
@@Thisthat1234I'm not surprised either. At the end of the day it's still a yellow watch. Regardless of the brand it's tied to, in this case Ed Sheeran, most people aren't going to get that just by seeing it on someone's wrist. They are just going to see a yellow watch, which is generally speaking a bit louder than most people want. It polarizing and limiting. Like I enjoy yellow, but I like yellow as an accent. I love the Black Bay Pro because of the yellow hand the dial text. But if the whole dial was yellow? Im not sure I would be as into it.
At 15:42 Christian does what he hits up Ed and John Mayer for - stops a line of dialogue and says “hey you want to hear my thought give me money and join our Patreon!” Wow talk about playing the game Christian. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🎉😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
I think you got it wrong with the Black Bay. Only Mayer had the Facebook version. Sheeran had a Black Bay with the Divide Tour album cover made for his staff for the tour. And it was one of those he saw that sold at auction.

I love hearing your take on this also, and definitely more so than from any other channel.....but...but....spanning this over 2 episodes makes the 'study aid' discussion as long as the original video 🙂
Ed repeatedly cites that his aim is to collect stories. I think that’s what getting the spiderman AP with John was about….however you’ve now got me paranoid that the whole thing was an AP psyop.
That’s why these celebrity watch episodes never interest me much. Without watching this, I assume it’s a bunch of Daytonas and APs with various “rare” dials?
Lucky enough to “only” have two Tudors in the stable (Twodors?), and I absolutely look at them differently. The bluesy Pelagos is MY watch, no two ways about it. But the Black Bay Ceramic? That’s just my watch for right now. Funny how a Pelly and a silly Speedy reduced are the only untouchable pieces in my collection, yet they’re the only pieces to have seen solid appreciation since I got them 😂 but money doesn’t make a watch yours - the memories and emotions tied to that watch do
The "this is mine now" thing is knowable to me from guitars. When I was a gigging lad, there were guitars that just *did not* go to gigs. I played them in the safety of a studio, or at home, but they didn't feel like mine, really mine, until I played them at shows. But it's a meaningful change in the relationship to take that step, and one that I didn't take flippantly.
I full-heartedly agree the topics brought up in this video are valid, especially the potential for support in independent watch brands… That being said, arguably John and Ed purchased one of a few AP models that would ostensibly support an “artist or craftsman” given the watch in question (Spider-Man AP).
I would say, if you invest in a podcast and gather so much attention. If you sell a watch without servicing. it has to be because there a history with that watch, and is better let alone than being touched. Like you wouldn't service a Paul Newman own collection watch IMO. You would let the buyer choose what to do with it
You got the black bay part wrong or it was confusing. They talked about the FB watch which they both have. However, Ed did not give a FB watch to everyone on tour. He gave a Black Bay 41 with the divide logo and engraving which someone then sold during COVID.
I completely see you point of view on the AP Spider-Man. I didn’t have that point of view when I first watched it but taking a step back it’s very obvious. Both my sister and I had similar thoughts on the moonswatch and thought it was off putting. One trip to Vegas, shortly after it’s release, we popped into the swatch store to see it and we both were holding them and had a similar conversation and said I’ll buy it if you do then bought them. I’ve maybe worn mine maybe 6 times in the past 18 months because it’s quirky and weirdand I’d rather wear my Omega moonwatch but I don’t regret it. At a different moment probably wouldn’t have bought it. John and Ed’s conversation reminded me of that moment and I’m sure a Spider-Man AP hits their bank account about as hard as a moonswatch hits mine. It’s part of the hobby IMO and they will have 10’s if not 100’s of millions to pass along to whomever so a dumb AP is really nothing to them.
Great take on the independents that could've been bought by Mayer/Sheeran. I got into vintage a long time ago (10 years). I saw these older watches and and couldn't resist. I still have so many. Most are not great watches but damn, so much fun. Maybe not much dollar value but insane mind value for me.
Love watching you guys! But speaking of watching, Michael’s nose rubbing is absolutely distracting. I think I heard him say it’s allergies but it also looks like a nervous tick. Have you ever noticed a UFC fight where on guy throws a huge head kick and almost instantly the other fighter throws the same kick…Christian, you’re catching Mike rubbing his nose and you’re subconsciously rubbing your nose right after in a few occasions. Try running a HEPA filter in that room until right before filming or have Mike take a Claritin. Love you guys….and Christian, love that digital memory capsule of your grandfather you filmed earlier. God bless him.
I think Christian’s dad blowing off the driveway (heard in the background) is causing Michael’s allergies to act up. But ya the Claritin, Zyrtec or some Flonase is really needed.
Partnering with Hodinkee means they sell way more units than they would via a direct collab. It wouldn’t be nearly as visible and hyped if it didn’t have that element (as an owner of a baby blue JM G Shock, that’s part of why I bought it)
Really enjoy your chats but it does grate slightly that you regularly tease content that’s behind the paywall. Appreciate that you need to make a living though. Thanks for all the effort you put into these.
And the tech is far more timeless. It doesn't need to be supported by anything. It's a clock with clock functions, maybe a few sensors, and an extremely durable case. If you're looking for a phone on the wrist, then the apple watch makes sense. I don't want that. I want a feature complete watch that I don't have to worry about ever, that I could just as easily wear in 30 years as I could tomorrow, like a mechanical watch. This is also why I don't buy their Bluetooth models or "smarter" models with health tracking stuff. Not what I'm looking for. Smart watches feel like a mini computer that's going to be in a landfill somewhere in few years. Regular gshock models feel like an actual watch that I can keep around for ages.
Someone already said it but I am going to repeat it. I own a (cheap) smartwatch. I don't hate them at all. But they are NOT watches. They are computers that eventually become obsolete and go into the trash.
@Theo and Harris-I am going to sound super ignorant and call the watch brand "that independent Japanese Watch Brand"-no originality, no hand finished calibre, why are we even comparing them to Patek Philippe? I have held even the oldest of Patek Calatravas and most of the watches form the big brands do not have finishing close to that of previous Pateks. This brand in my opinion is a hype brand, Grand Seiko, especially the new generation of Grand Seiko blows them out of water any day! How can you make an argument for them by saying the hard ware is very well finished? The hard ware is very well finished, what is that supposed to mean? How much more finishing in the hard ware can you get for say an additional $20,000 in comparison to a NEW GENEARATION automatic or Spring drive from Grand Seiko, OR an additional $10,000 for a previous genearation Patek Calatrava. This is the watch collecting elites that have pumped Kikuchi Nakagawa and even Naoya Hida. Low volume is not enough, I struggle to find the value in these, honestly.
How can you say a KIkuchi Nakagawa is better than a Patek 96? If they were both new, I bet any amount of money that the 96 will have better components where by each component has been hand finished, the case is solid golid, the beveling on a 96 would be painstakingly done especially at a time when volume was low. This is by idea, I may not have all the evidence but older watch making had more focus on finishing at Patek of before and now always followed the ethos of meticulous finishing.
I've completely lost respect for AP...that Spider man watch speaks volumes for the brand. They have lost their way. Sheeran and Mayer came across as w@#kers at the end of the video...I'm sure they both watched the end of that video and cringed. Supporting that ugly AP undermined all the credibility they generated.
I'm glad to hear someone say this. I thought I was alone in my dislike for them, they're so dull! Just two guys with too much money, no insight or anything interesting said about watches, just formulaic "I bought this really expensive watch at this point in my music career" Christian and Michael are the complete opposite. How they discuss watches is what brings me back to every video. They have natural charm and a great friendship that shines through when they discuss watches and actually have something interesting to say. An opinion!
AP is giving royal oak to everyone with followers on instagram. It became a hip thing to have, even people who don't care about watches want one now. They became Nouveau riche it new toy
I hate to say it, but John Mayer was right. Instead of a fancy Royal Oak Spider-Man watch, you do an affordable Peter Parker watch. You do the MoonSwatch, but instead, it's the APP, the Audemars Peter Parker. You make a field watch in the same vein as a G-Shock, you put Peter Parker somewhere on it, it's ceramic and plastic, maybe a sapphire crystal, you charge $400 for it. Before they jacked up their prices, Hamilton sold their field watch for $350. Totally doable. I'd even get one. Also, stop saying "I'm saving that for the Zero" all the time. It's constant. Please.
I think john mayer ("the watch guy") was wearing a pretty outrageous piece unique on stage an no watch nerds spotted it! Rather than worrying about his image etc as it wasnt his watch and wasn't planned out.
I honestly don’t get the hate for GP. So what if you like the AP Royal Oak. The RO is great, but that doesn’t mean they are the only brand or watch that is allowed to be cool. There are so many great brands that make so many great pieces.
In many ways I think that AP is the brand that most people think that Rolex has become. It feels all flex, hype and bling, as though they have lost sight of what actually made them good. They sell one watch in different outfits. In my opinion they symbolise everything that I am beginning to dislike about the watch industry. Current AP is overrated imo. When the hype leaves the industry their brand is going to take the biggest perception hit in comparison to their biggest competitors such as PP, VC & AL&S.
I think this is true, but there can be more than one brand doing it. AP and Rolex do it in slightly different price and volume brackets, but they feel similarly "icky" to me, like their customers, marketing, and business decisions keep me from being interested even if there was a watch I wanted from them. There just happens to not be a watch I want from either, but if there was one, I wouldn't buy it. I'll buy what makes me happy, but buying what feels to me like a symbol of values I don't agree with won't make me happy, even if the watch is cool.
I think you guys missed what Mayer was saying about the watch being "his." I understood it to mean that he buys some high-end pieces (obviously) but likely keeps them in a vault with pieces that seldom see a wrist. And then at some point, he resigns himself that the watch is "his" in that he's okay removing it from an investment category or simply a valuable asset class to something he will wear in daily rotation without any real concern or paranoia about what happens. E.g. swirls, dings, wear marks, etc.
...TCG as lead investor, and other investors including French luxury giant LVMH's LVMH Luxury Ventures subsidiary, True Ventures, Grammy-award winning musician John Mayer and six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady....
I personally like Ben's interviews alot more because he wasnt just asking questions the whole time. John just keeps up these questions that are stupid to be honest. "Would you give away ur entire collection just for this one watch?" "Fuck no John. Would you?" Ben actually helps the guest go through all the watches on the table makes makes the Interview more comfortable to watch. John and Ed just didn't feel that comfortable. Idk why. I just prefer Ben's style rather than John's celebrity name being in the title of the video.
I know Ben is kinda douchey or some word along those lines. But idk I just like him more than john talking watches. Now I would love to watch John talking about guitars or pedals that interest him. But idk about watches.
While you make some good points, its more about clout now than anything else. Ben has single handedly proven that he cannot keep HODINKEE afloat. Someone like John Mayer, with the celebrity persona (interview style aside) can. That's all I am getting at. @@LikeigiveAFaboutU
@@SuperWhofan1 yeah I'm not saying that. I agree of course. But he needs to get some training. Hell I interviewed a munch of bands for a thing I tried to start. I honestly was bad at interviewing but it went okay enough that other people told me it is alright to post them. But I need to watch a couple videos on it too. John as well can learn a tad bit from Ben
I'm convinced Christian is wearing a brown + green combination just to drive comment engagement. There's no way he doesn't realize how much of a bait that is.
LOL if there is a waiting list that you can skip with a link then there is no waiting list. Who wants to invest in a company that lies to you right off the bat?
François-Henry Bennahmias certainly multiplied sales but I didn't like its design language. I cry after the designs from Madam Jaqueline Dimier, looking at the 15000ST 33mm on my wrist. Same as with the (vintage) AP Starweel (25720B), which is so charming, and their current Starweel model.
A lot of people think of free fallin’ , wait til tomorrow, XO, bold as love, as Mayer songs because of how transformative he was when he basically rewrote the sheet music.
Not gonna lie, I’m getting disappointed and disinterested when every time an interesting point is happening in the conversation on the topic at hand and then it’s becomes and ad for the Zero. I love T&H and the Iron snail and have loved it for years, since the beginning actually, it just sucks for the audience who isn’t apart of the paywall can’t be involved. No hate for either of you lovely gentleman just my opinion and I appreciate you both immensely.
When money isn’t an option that is a normal day. You live and make brash decisions if you can afford it. But the JM/ES video I thought it felt genuine. Good vids though guys.
Personally I just don't get it. Sorry to be that hater but I find John and Ed really quite dull. Ed is just rich and has no taste especially considering money is not a barrier, but it's nice he buys what he likes. John comes across as conceited in the video. Also then every watch outlet covers their conversation. Hodinkee seems obsessed with them and every social media platform talks about the video for weeks. I can't be the only one who really doesn't care about what they think? I love hearing people sharing their opinions on watches but really I'm struggling to decide which is worse, their music or their conversations about watches 😂
I think it's interesting to hear from major collectors, but agree, they themselves aren't very interesting. A good example of more compelling content is Teddy Baldassarre interviewing a stunt man with his dozen watches. So much more relatable, and filled with more real life than multi-millionaires texting the CEO of various watch companies to get an inside line on some 1 of 3 release.
I wouldn't say I care what they think, but I'm curious about completely "other" perspectives compared to my own. Then I'm curious what kinds of unusual things might get said that channels like this might then interpret. Same sort of goes for this channel. Their opinions are closer to mine, but still pretty far. Most of the watches they express interest in, I'm not into. There are points here and there, though, that I do appreciate their thoughts on. I just like watches and hearing people's takes if they're presented in a way that feels like expression of taste and interest rather than hatred. Anyone out to tear stuff down is just annoying to listen to.
Funny how conversation about self awarnes about moment when they talk about the Patek 5208 that is apsulute top of Patek. Conversation about it not being spotted os about this that public observes hipe not what aficionados would appreciate

We can edit on Christian. He is a walk green screen
Another great episode brought to us by Theodore "Beaver" Cleaver and Eddie Haskell ♡
Which Fleece Jacket is Christian wearing in the watch strap commercial?
Am I the only one that hears a leaf blower in the background?
😂😂
What watch is Christian wearing here?
Unimatic. Looks like the UNIMATIC UC4 CLASSIC WATCH
Not me on my casio, wishing i would wake up with what Mayer says is just a drunk decision
Christian went quick for the line 😂😂
nothing watch related, but I love the Vest you are wearing Christian.
Is it “paddock” or
“Pa-tech”?
The Cartier coke kings !
I honestly don’t get the hate for GP. So what if you like the AP Royal Oak. The RO is great, but that doesn’t mean they are the only brand or watch that is allowed to be cool. There are so many great brands that make so many great pieces.
What do you guys think of the TT daytona white dial? Do you think it's something that could be timeless?
Nice Unimatic
I'll buy what makes me happy, but buying what feels to me like a symbol of values I don't agree with won't make me happy, even if the watch is cool.
nah.... I will not be "going over to the zero" at what seemed like it'd be the most exciting part of the video. good luck guys. closed at 15:58
I think maybe he said he would regret waking up next to Girard Perregaux himself.
Would love to hear your thoughts about TG Monaco.
Can you also cover the Only Watch controversy, thanks!
Come on guys that "insane" Japanese watch is pretty much the same as Seikos first watch. The Laurel. Looks like a straight copy.
John Mayer is invested in DEEEEZ NUTZZZ!
Quality episode
I would never fault someone for saving tens of thousands of dollars on a bloody watch. The GP looks good.
To AP credit, The spider man watch is a concept...which are super fugly watches to begin with. Putting spider man on it does make sense in some way.
What is Christian wearing?
Michael acting shocked that J.M. is an investor in Hodinkee. They mentioned it in part 1.
Terrible acting.
...TCG as lead investor, and other investors including French luxury giant LVMH's LVMH Luxury Ventures subsidiary, True Ventures, Grammy-award winning musician John Mayer and six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady....
3 plugs in 12 minutes this feels like a PGA tour broadcast
HODINKEE is dying. John is the only one that can save it. Ben Clymer is just a joke and so uncharismatic for the most part.
I personally like Ben's interviews alot more because he wasnt just asking questions the whole time. John just keeps up these questions that are stupid to be honest. "Would you give away ur entire collection just for this one watch?" "Fuck no John. Would you?"
Ben actually helps the guest go through all the watches on the table makes makes the Interview more comfortable to watch.
Ben can’t save Hodinkee by just posting 1 interview. It’s dying
I prefer this to his cringy 1/2 unbuttoned dress shirt
Theo and Harris or Wally (from the “Beav”) and Spanky?
LOL if there is a waiting list that you can skip with a link then there is no waiting list. Who wants to invest in a company that lies to you right off the bat?
François-Henry Bennahmias certainly multiplied sales but I didn't like its design language. I cry after the designs from Madam Jaqueline Dimier, looking at the 15000ST 33mm on my wrist. Same as with the (vintage) AP Starweel (25720B), which is so charming, and their current Starweel model.
$30,000 for a basic 3 handler? Not a chance.
5711?
Did Christian just claim Bold as Love is a John Mayer song? Oh Christian, you need to listen to some more Jimi Hendrix.
Agree 💯
The Dink have milked that TW piece until it has curdled.
All I hear is the leaf blower in the background and it’s driving me insane.
Can John save Hodinkee? Lol cmon Mike that was headline news
Nothing like the coochie watch!! 😂😂😂😂
Hendrix baby
Funny how conversation about self awarnes about moment when they talk about the Patek 5208 that is apsulute top of Patek. Conversation about it not being spotted os about this that public observes hipe not what aficionados would appreciate
