  • It's time to work on the D4400 diesel engine! We remove the front timing gear cover, camshaft, decompression system and water pump. Overall, progress continues on the 1939 Cat D4 agricultural crawler. 4G9986 "Lil Lefty" has never been so much fun and fulfilling. I hope you enjoy the shop talk, banter and commentary.
    Thanks for watching!

    Your not the only one who missed the old craftsman tools. I have a ton of them but I'd like some others.

      They were such an excellent trade off for price and value. A lot of them were very innovative too. I used to love to just roam around the Sears tool department. 😏

    It’s obvious you been working on machines for a while, the explanation of the timing gears spot on.

    I am really impressed how you figured out those timing marks I would have never been able to figure that out, and because it’s so deceptive you’d think that there would be clear instructions in the manual about how to time everything because that’s such an important step!

      It was very fun to start spinning things around and see if we could figure it out. 👍

    Invest in a bottle of florescent fingernail polish for the flywheel marks.

      I will borrow some from my wife that's a great idea! Don't know if she has anything that bright though, 🤣

    I would think the accessory gear would need to be timed also for the fuel pump timing for the injectors. Good thing you walked that back.

      I agree. We didn't want to pull anything off of there until we had it figured out. 👍

      I need to work on my fuel pump and keeping everything in time or getting it timed properly is weighing heavily on my mind. You are 💯 on the manuals not always having the best instructions or references.

    If that idler gear was off then someone had been in there before and worked on it they were lucky they got it back in time with the marks off like that great video thanks for sharing
    Hope the stings heal quickly most bees and wasps and hornets will attack movement if you haven’t been stung you can stand still and usually they fly around looking for something to move but if you get stung they mark you with a pheromone that signals the rest to attack

      They're pretty much healed up. I have one on my finger that still has a partial stinger stuck in it. Tried to dig it out but it's pretty deep. Thanks for watching, hope all is well!

    I think the ASME, SAE or whatever organization is in charge of that should consider renaming fold over locks to *Squatch253 locks* 😉

    Don't forget that 7J motor has some decent internals in it too. Kinda looks like those cam lobes have some flat spots on the tips of the lobes. Not sure it's supposed to be that way or not? Probably worth pulling 7J apart and just comparing parts? Good to see some more progress!

    • @lifeafterourloss
      @lifeafterourloss  Год назад +2

      Hey Kevin, I thought that too at first, but they're supposed to be flat. They have a longer duration to keep the valves open. We are definitely going to get into the 7J engine. It's sitting in our shop. Dad is just chomping at the bit to clean it off and get started. We may have the valves redone and set it into 5T. The beauty is we can use the 7J parts to save several machines! 😊

    Copper sealing washers are available from newco in northridge ca or belmetric measure id od and thickness. One or the other should have something that is just right. Not stamped from crap and not annealed.

    From what I have learned you do wanna pay attention to the Impaler shaft that it dose not have any nicks and dings in it. Specially the surface side that rides on the bearing and packet nut. If the idler gear has no cavity style rust it is safe to reuse. Only thing make sure your pushing inside the idler gear has not egged out. I have had a few similar gears where the pushing has gone so thin it would cause additional slack in the timing gears that is unwanted. These seemed to be yellow jacket wasps. Know to be very unfriendly

    Another nice video looking forward to your next part about the fuel housing unit that is where I am at. wow those things really got you on the run. They do not give up easy, do they? I am having a problem with my dozer was just looking to see if you got to the injector unit or housing unit not sure what to call it. I watched Squatch253s repair on it very informative. But as I set, I think oh yea how does it oil again or why would the filter housing have good pressure and I'm not getting fuel out of the injector pumps maybe dirty filters. Anyway, since it would not start after 1 and 1/2 months away, I am learning about the injector housing governor unit. Waiting for rain to go away so I can work on mine probably tomorrow. oh, yea I finally got a service manual and a parts one I think I should have got an operators manual. I think it would tell me better what how to grease kind of oils in what area. I know nothing about this stuff, I thought all I needed was a grease gun, I see I need more then that just not sure what.

      We've been a little bit worried about the injectors. The good news is I did find rebuild kits in Albania, they're definitely New Old Stock made in Germany. I really lucked out to find them. Definitely going to be a whole new learning experience working on the fuel system!

    Would the timing cover be able to be removed in the crawler? I’m looking at one, the pony ran two years ago and it fires on ether I was told. However it was discovered the cam that drives the injection pump isn’t spinning. I’ve not played with one of these before so I’m trying to figure out how deep i may have to go if i get it

    • @lifeafterourloss
      @lifeafterourloss  8 месяцев назад +2

      You shouldn't have to pull the timing cover to resolve the issue. There's an inspection cover on the front of the governor where the gear is that drives the fuel pump. I think you could get access to what you need through there and by removing the fuel pumps. The fuel pumps are pretty heavy though. My guess is maybe the governor is froze up. If it's set for a long time the dry/dirty oil can make everything stick. I would start with a peek in that inspection cover and hopefully you don't have to go that deep into it. 👍

      @@lifeafterourloss Thank you! Maybe I will check it out after all. I just need a small hobby dozer to reshape my properties grade and had written this one off despite it appearing to be in decent shape. It's definitely cheap though.
