    Two-part episode! First, we install the pony motor (donkey start). Up next, we assemble, time and install the Eisemann RC-2H magneto. There are a few minor issues along the way. Overall, progress continues on the 1939 Cat D4 / RD4 agricultural crawler with a D4400 diesel engine. 4G9986 "Lil Lefty" has never been so much fun and fulfilling. I hope you enjoy the shop talk, banter and commentary.
    We are operators pretending to be mechanics!
    Thanks for watching!

      I really have to give it a try when we get this thing up and running. I think I will try it once cold. Then I will try it again hot. I suppose it's possible but it is going to be a workout. We will find out. 😊👍

      @@lifeafterourloss Remember the WD-9 started on gas and then was switched over to diesel... so it might not be a fair comparison.

    11:51 them specialists say always leave a piece of metal on the horseshoe magnet poles when not installed on the mag itself. Not to loose magnetism.

      That's definitely good advice. You'll see in a future video where I think that bit us. We should have charged it before I put it back on the Magneto. You definitely shed light on what I think our problem was. 👍

    I can't get over all the intricate parts you delve into that I have avoided in my 60 plus years of Caterpillar use. I have only fixed what broke and happily used what worked. I hope my old D47U never hears about you guys.

    I think it you’ll need about 5-6 guys to start it cold and even then it will be a bridge to far but I have been proven wrong and it has been a pleasant surprise so I would still be cheering for the Cleaner and remember no starting fluid that’s cheating and it can crack a ring! But sometimes you just need it!😀🇨🇦

    Somewhere in the operator's manual it says the crank is just for service. Setting the timing and such. Have you ever started a D4 with the pony without letting the pony warm it up? Mine would never start with just a few pulls on a crank.

    • @lifeafterourloss
      @lifeafterourloss  27 дней назад +3

      That's kind of what I suspected. However Dad is convinced it can be done. So obviously I have to try, 😂. I'm thinking we will try it cold and then try it warm. I don't think it's going to matter either way I doubt it will start with just the crank. 👍

      @@lifeafterourloss would be cool! I did coldstart some Lister 3 cil diesels in the past... But with compression release.... And probably a bit smaller than the d4

    • @lifeafterourloss
      @lifeafterourloss  26 дней назад +3

      @mmm365 I'm thinking Dad will have to operate the compression release if I can get some momentum going. Either way I'm very skeptical like you said that's a big engine to crank start. I will try it cold and then try it warm. Either way I'm pretty skeptical that it can be done. Sounds like a good video though!
