Two-part episode! First, we install the pony motor (donkey start). Up next, we assemble, time and install the Eisemann RC-2H magneto. There are a few minor issues along the way. Overall, progress continues on the 1939 Cat D4 / RD4 agricultural crawler with a D4400 diesel engine. 4G9986 "Lil Lefty" has never been so much fun and fulfilling. I hope you enjoy the shop talk, banter and commentary.
We are operators pretending to be mechanics!
Thanks for watching!

The cleaner is sure good at making those plaquards shine! Very interesting video guys. Thanks
Quality build. My 7u,s are envious.
As always still fun to watch you two fix this old doxer.
It's good to seeing it getting closer to running.
Can’t wait to see her hummin like a singer sewing machine. 👍🏻
Greg - The Gasket Master. Awesome project guys.
My dad used to hand crank his WD-9, i remember it being a workout.
I really have to give it a try when we get this thing up and running. I think I will try it once cold. Then I will try it again hot. I suppose it's possible but it is going to be a workout. We will find out. 😊👍
@@lifeafterourloss Remember the WD-9 started on gas and then was switched over to diesel... so it might not be a fair comparison.
@@raincoast9010 That's true, I imagine it would start a bit easier. I'm looking forward to giving it a try though. I better work on my cardio between now and then, 🤣.
@@lifeafterourloss Maybe start out with something light, take the cat for a walk... ha ha ha.
😂🤣😂
11:51 them specialists say always leave a piece of metal on the horseshoe magnet poles when not installed on the mag itself. Not to loose magnetism.
That's definitely good advice. You'll see in a future video where I think that bit us. We should have charged it before I put it back on the Magneto. You definitely shed light on what I think our problem was. 👍
I can't get over all the intricate parts you delve into that I have avoided in my 60 plus years of Caterpillar use. I have only fixed what broke and happily used what worked. I hope my old D47U never hears about you guys.
😂 We do have quite a punch list of future projects. I think you're 7U should be safe for now. 😊
Wonderful job with assembling the machine. Magnetos are tricky sometimes :D ask me how I know.
I did not know that the cam has two marks. Maybe one day I'll get my pony running.
I think it you’ll need about 5-6 guys to start it cold and even then it will be a bridge to far but I have been proven wrong and it has been a pleasant surprise so I would still be cheering for the Cleaner and remember no starting fluid that’s cheating and it can crack a ring! But sometimes you just need it!😀🇨🇦
I agree with you! Maybe I need to set up an Olympic Style D4 crank relay team. 😂 I just have to give it a try though.
@@lifeafterourloss Ya great idea and make sure you stalk up the Pepsi machine 😂😂😀🇨🇦
The front cylinder on the pony is number 1
Mitch from @beginlivinglikeaboss says the same thing number 1 closest to the front(radiator)
Yep, I got that mixed up. 👍
It was at this point 😂
😂, I had to slip that one in there it's just too funny! Thanks Tom! We hit over 5000 subscribers tonight. 😊
OMG 😱 THE PAINT IS ALL WRONG. 😮
It is too nice of a job. 🙄
LOL😂
🤫 shhh (comment generator)
I’m out in the yard reverse engineering a 1970’s scissor lift. 😅
Somewhere in the operator's manual it says the crank is just for service. Setting the timing and such. Have you ever started a D4 with the pony without letting the pony warm it up? Mine would never start with just a few pulls on a crank.
That's kind of what I suspected. However Dad is convinced it can be done. So obviously I have to try, 😂. I'm thinking we will try it cold and then try it warm. I don't think it's going to matter either way I doubt it will start with just the crank. 👍
@@lifeafterourloss careful with that, care your arm and elbow ... First try with compression release...
Its for rotation for valve adjustment and stuff i think
@mmm365 I think so too. I still want to give it a try though. 😊
@@lifeafterourloss would be cool! I did coldstart some Lister 3 cil diesels in the past... But with compression release.... And probably a bit smaller than the d4
@mmm365 I'm thinking Dad will have to operate the compression release if I can get some momentum going. Either way I'm very skeptical like you said that's a big engine to crank start. I will try it cold and then try it warm. Either way I'm pretty skeptical that it can be done. Sounds like a good video though!
