Couple of things. Jonathan Smiths style of football fits the BIG 10 brand. Tough , hard nosed, physical. Given what the Michigan State football went through. This gives the program the clean slate they very much needed. And he will be given ample time to make this into a winner.
This is a very well researched and articulate presentation of Michigan States hiring of Jonathan Smith. Clearly, Michigan State needs him to take the coordinators he had with him at Oregon State. A physical style of football and player development similar to Mark Dantonios great tenure with the Spartans. Where Dantonio finally started to fade was when the offensive line play slipped badly. That one decaying aspect kept them from winning many close games at the end of his career. The offensive line coach at Oregon State is one of the finest in the country. As is their defensive coordinator. These are the building blocks of success at the highest level. Complementary football in every phase of the game. I dont know if Smith can recruit at an elite level at Michigan State. He might not have to. Can you develop players to PLAY at an elite level? That is the true key to sustained success. If Smith could provide winning football at Oregon State, what can he do with the Spartans? That is a tantalizing prospect indeed.
Hey Max! Beaver fan here. Can you tell me one QB that JS (a former QB himself here at OSU) has developed himself? Nope. Because he has not! If it weren't for Coach M (O Line) and the late change to DC Trent Bray, Smith would have been maybe 6-6 or 7-5. He will struggle at MSU for a few reasons; 1) talent in the conference is much better and more teams, 2) In every loss this season, Smith had some crazy ass calls that contributed mightily the losses (fake punts, Fake FG having the kicker trying to run the ball in from beyond the 20yd line with 3 seconds, etc, etc) He gambles way too much, 3) Smith had a tendency to get away from what were the team's strengths (running the football)-not sure if he was doing that just to slight us (considering the last 2 games, something was very off- now we know what it was This brings me to my last point- Smith called Oregon State his "Dream Job", when he was hired in '18. He bolted (almost literally in the middle of the night). Don't blame re-alignment or anything else. The way he left(his alma mater and his "dream job"), you think he has loyalty to you? MSU?! Get real! Fuck Smith! Go Beavs!
If he wanted to win a championship at a P5 school, he had to jump NOW. Teams that move down conferences or subdivisions tend to do as well as they did at the higher divisions, meaning that Oregon State likely would have just been an 8 win kind of team in the Mountain West and that’s not good enough to land a job at, say, Michigan State.
I don't get ppl saying this is a great hire. This could EASILY go south quickly. And we will see in the coming months if that's the case, if Jon Smith continues to recruit like a Mid-Major, bringing in weak 3-star recruits for MSU's 2024 class. If his MSU class is all kids from California. It will not bode well for Mr Smith. The guy has had abysmal recruit classes and most of his kids are from California. That doesn't translate very well to MSU at all. He's already trying to head off any potential criticism by saying "it takes time to become successful". As if MSU is Oregon State circa 2017. MSU had a very good recruiting class in 2022. We're not that desperate...and we have two 4-star QBs from the West Coast. If Trent Bray doesn't come, that could be a huge blow if he's responsible for the only two respectable seasons under Jon Smith. If you track OSU's rise, it coincides with Bray's promotion to DC. Realize also, Smith has 2 good seasons to his name, one ranked #17, another #22 (this year). Sorry, that's not terribly impressive when you consider Toledo is ranked #23. At least it's not terribly impressive to a Spartan when we recently finished top 10 with a New Years Bowl win and a win over Michigan. Like I said, we could see as early as February if this whole hire was a total disaster. No Bray and a crap recruit class will be really, really disappointing. Again, I have no clue why so many people think this is a great hire. The odds are totally against Jon Smith being successful at MSU. He'd be better off going to UCLA.
Qualifier; I told MSU not to hire Mel Tucker...repeatedly. Now w that said... I think this too is a mis-hire. Not so much that he's a poor coach but; 1. MSU always seems desperate to get a coach quickly. 2. He didn't consistently win the PAC12, or ever win. 3. What convinces MSU that he can Win the BIG12ish. 4. If PAC12 was in business, he'd likely have stayed there. 5. If MSUs goal is Respectability or consistent upper division of BIG12...3/4th place...8 wins...maybe 9...might be an Ok hire. Truth.

Michigan state fan here. Thank you for the info on him. Seems like a lot of this has happened as you guessed it would.
💯👊🏻
OSU is without a conference. If the Pac 12 doesn’t implode he’s still at OSU.

As an Oregon State fan, RIP to our football program. Might as well invest in our forestry program and become the best forestry college in the country.
We’ll be ok, there’s always ups and downs for every team

If Bray doesn't go to MSU, how screwed is MSU?
Coach Smoth wouldn’t have left if Pac 12 wouldn’t have crashed. Chiles is going to MSU.
MSU has 2 4-star QBs already. I think MSU fans might be kinda pissed if Smith caste them away. Or pushed them out.
