Skoda joins the segment for small, trendy SUVs with this car, the Kamiq. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.
Ten Second Review
What's this? Another small SUV? You could argue that Skoda had a hand in popularising this concept a decade ago with their Yeti model. Today, we've got the Kamiq, which aims to distil all the Czech brand's best bits into a compact Crossover you could really bond with.
Background
Skoda could have been at the forefront of the current craze for supermini-based SUVs - Juke and Captur-class models. Back in 2009 before either of these two cars, it launched a model you might conceivably remember, the Yeti, which used Fabia bits but dressed them up with Crossover attitude.
It was a good start, but the foundation wasn't built upon. The facelifted Yeti of 2013 was disappointingly conservative in a market seeking high fashion and after four years on sale, was allowed to drift out of production without being properly replaced. Leaving the Czech brand to wait until it could launch its own version of the small SUV design possible on the VW Group's MQB-A0 platform, a chassis that by Autumn 2019 had been pressed into service for the SEAT Arona and the Volkswagen T-Cross in this class. That was when Skoda was also able to use it to launch this car, the Kamiq.
Driving Experience
Because this Kamiq uses the same underpinnings as a Skoda Scala family hatch, it can only have front wheel drive and straightforward torsion bean rear suspension. Still, that's all likely buyers will probably want. As an option, the brand offers 'Sport Chassis Control', which lowers the car by 10mm and gives it two-way adjustable dampers. We can't see many customers taking this up.
Most customers will want the base 1.0-litre TSI petrol engine. Entry-level versions get it in 95PS form with a 5-speed gearbox but further up the range, the variants available feature this unit in a 115PS state of tune. Go for that and you'll be offered the option of a 7-speed DSG auto gearbox. Both engines have impressive torque available from low revs - the 95PS version delivering 175Nm from just 2,000rpm and the 115PS version serving up its 200Nm across the same 2,000rpm to 3,500rpm band. In other words, you won't have to row this little SUV along with the gear lever through town. Skoda is also offering two other units, a 150PS 1.5 TSI petrol powerplant and a 115PS 1.6 TDI diesel. Don't expect a Kamiq to ride quite as well as a Scala - that taller, heavier body has to tell somewhere - but for the school run and commuting duties, few buyers are likely to have issues.
Design and Build
With cars like the Roomster and the Yeti, Skoda used to set itself apart with individualistic design. There's nothing like that here. Instead, the Kamiq looks essentially like a version of one of the brand's larger SUVs - the Karoq and the Kodiaq - that's been somehow shrunk in a hot wash. The separated lighting panel for the dipped headlamp beams sits below rather than above the daytime running light strips flanking the grille. Otherwise, the front end here is very similar to the Skoda Crossover norm.
Inside, there's plenty of quality, acres of ergonomic design, little to surprise and nothing to disappoint. Upper-spec models can have digital instrument cluster dials and all get the Czech brand's shiny smart glass-fronted centre-dash screen that sets the class standard for infotainment. Rear legroom isn't of the order you'd find in the kind of Scala or Octavia family hatch model you could buy from Skoda for similar money. But Kamiq customers, who'll typically use this area of the car primarily for ferrying kids from ballet classes to school outings, probably won't care too much about that. The same comment applies to the boot, which measures in at 400-litres, extendable to 1,395-litres when the rear seats are folded.

The Kamiq being 5 inches longer in it's wheelbase was one of the reasons I bought one. That extra length translates into more rear legroom and a larger boot, or load bay length once the seats are folded. The interior styling of the T Cross looked a touch brash for me, and I felt the Seat Arona was a bit to "cutesy", and didn't have quite the load bay space I wanted. The 110 bhp of my Kamiq SE-L has more than enough power for me. I rarely do longer trips these days, but even with only a 1.0 litre engine, the Kamiq's motorway cruising ability is pleasing. And the LED headlights are outstanding at night.....

Great review. I understand that the 1.0 engine, is the most common choice. of buyers ? Anyway , at my county ( Israel) , it seems that the popular engine is the 1.5 petrol ( no diesel optin)
@OSV I can understand the practicality side, but does the Hyundai Kona actually struggles on the driving dynamics side, against the Skoda Kamiq?
Especially if we take in to account, the rear independent suspension and the 1.6T engine against the Kamiqs 1.5T?

Had a test drive yesterday with one, far from a SUV, maybe a mini crossover for sure, very comfy and nice car to sit in and had a Sport Business type with great soundsystem amd much extra, but I felt a bit claustrophobic in it, unless you sit really low...

I drove the Karoq and was pleasantly surprised. How smaller would this model be to the Karoq? I didn't think I would want to go any smaller TBH.
Hi Shaggy, the Kamiq is Skoda's smallest SUV, measuring 4,241mm long, 1,793mm wide and 1,553mm high. By comparison, the Karoq measures 4,382mm long, 1,841mm wide and 1,603mm high. Hope this helps 👍
I'm struggling to find the difference between this and the Fabia . Same engine, Near identical kW/t, Tare weight, looks near identical and the same price... I must be missing something here that's obvious to everyone else...
Is the Kamiq the Fabia replacement?
Actually it's based on the Scala chassis, it's wider and longer than the Fabia. A bit more roomy.

You should perhaps rethink your huge logo. In the rear seat scene, the distance between head and roof is hidden by the logo. Big is not always better;)

The Skoda will be more solidly built......
Looks a good car,my only downside is the seat position is too low,so I might go for T-Cross as driving position is higher!
Go for the kamiq, you won’t be sorry, I promise you that .
T cross comes without parking sensors ! For 2020 it’s No thanks
U can jack the seats up in kamiq quite a bit to get a higher position feel

Dom Dom what’s wrong with it?
There were terrible stalling and kangerooing issues when the engine came out. VW were very poor in rectifying the matter. Please google the issue. More recent 1.5tsi engines appear to be better.

I went for 2020 CHR used. Know that not as practical but it’s a better car than the Skoda and is so economical

How on earth did this car need an hour of video time? 18 minutes in and I’ve seen the MQB visual about a dozen times…. This car is dull as ditch water and everyone knows it.
If your thinking of buying a Kamiq check out the heating controls,they are dreadful, can’t understand Skoda having such a poor system.
Got one since April and heating/cooling controls are just fine, unless you need to manually change the fan intensity every 5 minutes. This goes automatically for a/c and there is also hardware button for instant full fan speed to dehaze the windscreen. This may does not apply on lower trims (I got STYLE trim (CZ), which is more or less the equivalent of SE L trim in The UK).
@@jirik777 Same here. I haven't touched my heating/air con controls in my Kamiq SE-L for months. I haven't felt the need to.... i just set the climate control at 19 degrees, and leave it. The auto setting does the rest.
