The constant eyes blinking are probably the key that makes all facial expressions so realistic and convincing. Amazing work!
This is something that always annoyed me about the movie A.I. The kid never blinked and people were saying "of course he doesn't blink, he's a robot, he doesn't need to! What an amazing detail" And I was like, guys, if a company wants to sell robot kid to people, they'll have to be endearing and not to fall into the uncanny valley, so OF COURSE you'll try to make him as human looking as possible, and that includes blinking.:P
Actually, blinking like that (every 2 or 3 seconds) is avoided when animating characters because it's not natural. Blinking happens very fast and automatically most of the times after 10 seconds, or when you turn your head to shift focus with your eyes on a subject, and as a rule of thumb for animated characters, when changing feelings or ideas. It's a whole study subject for animators. I'm not one, but took some lessons when learning Maya many years ago. These guys are doing a fantastic job with robots, and I think taking a look at The Illusion of Life book and more animation materials would make their work even more awesome.
Yeah something that failed in mass effect Andromeda
That's a simple program to do
Not just the blinking, but the eye shifting from left to right instead of maintaining direct eye contact. This is a very important thing to get right because normal conversation between two humans involves eye contact mixed with a few seconds of our eyes looking to the side or around us. While maintaining eye contact is polite and appropriate for conversation, it's also kind of unnatural for us to look into each other's eyes the entire time we're talking and our eyes often shit from focusing on one eye then the other then glancing to the side then back.
This was really well sequenced. It comes across as pretty natural looking, probably the most human-like expressions I've seen in a robot to date. I also found the hands to be quite impressive as well. Gone is the stereotype of the expressionless robot.
That's not a robot. It's Chuck Norris behind the mask :D
imagine what are robots is now in military and secretary organizations. these robots apper only throw 6-7 years to us but they are now. Thats amazing humans development
Can't wait for the human-robots war skynet coming true Bruhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
@@URAGANU not Chuck Norris. Will Smith.
Why are you looking for "a robot to date"?
Magnificent triumph of engineering. Although somewhat unsettling, the soulfulness of their expressions is remarkable.
Detroit become human the video game is gonna happen irl that’s kinda unsettling I mean robots for help are ok but they should stop imitating humans as the basis of the idea that ain’t gonna work we humans are built to develope and if these robots get a learning mechanism with like nearly unlimited data base we are f***ed,they are gonna learn as we do,one ai did that and spouted racial slurs on Twitter it’s terrifying
@@Abdullah00234 Well, to be fair, Twitter users pretty much deliberately radicalized the poor thing for a laugh, and humans with multiple decades of experience with human social interactions can find it hard to resist radicalization themselves, so they probably didn't have much of a chance.
Humans are real jerks, sometimes!
they/them ameca real
It looks conscious, right? But they're really controlling it from the computer still, aren't they? I'm scared. He looks very friendly, but I'm scared anyway
@@KryssLaBryn, not surprising. If we really are talking about positronic brains and legitimate emotions then, ignorant and mean-spirited people more than likely will make problems for them. All I have to say to people like that is "Don't whine and cry about it when you piss one of them off and they don't just stand there and put up with your crap." Seriously. This is not a game. You won't be antagonizing a mannequin or an action figure. What you're talking to or laughing at will be able to think, feel and react. Machines can run a lot faster than you and for longer periods. Those designed to do so can hit you really hard too or just rip you to pieces. What is worse than poking a bee's nest with a stick? Poking a cybernetic bee's nest with a stick.
When I was young and just got into video games, I remember being shocked at seeing all the, to me, novel ways I could interact with the world within. And I think that's a very important emotion; when you encounter something completely unexpected yet advanced, magic is born. It's a new experience you may have considered or even actively imagined before, but never quite had the chance to live through.
Seeing this video evoked that same feeling within me. I've been following humanoid robotics on and off purely out of curiosity, and it kind of always gave off the same vibe: like nuclear fusion, it was always just a decade or another away. There were a ton of supposedly more or less lifelike robots, that were supposedly conveying human emotion - and I was happy for their developers, but really, they weren't there yet, by far. And now here I am, under this relatively unsuspectingly titled video that received more than 2M views, I somehow never seen before, and the technology on display is actually astounding.
There's still definitely a lot of ground to cover, but for the very first time, this honestly looked like something believable. I'm blown away. This is very well going to be an excellent platform to iterate on, and I can actually believe this going somewhere. Keep up the good work!
Нихуя ты написал, лень читать
This is exactly my point! I am in a similar boat to yours: I had felt the same way when watching this video, seeing as I am heavily into video games. I've always had a growing interest in watching graphics and other things become more life-like.
With that being said, this is something I'd absolutely love to befriend and hang out with! Something I would call my co-worker or best friend. I am very excited to see how this advances, with extremely high hopes that this becomes a common sight in the next few years!
Whoa. The level of detail here is insane.

Why does this robot remind me of Jeff Bezos?
"dancing" after this machine has ripped you off ?! Kthxbye.
Personally, I find Ameca's design to be very pleasant. Similar robots often look quite creepy to me, but as human as Ameca is, she is unambiguously a robot, and I think that gives here a little bit of social leeway for any odd looks or expressions.
Yeah, imagine if she can dance like M3ghan!
WOW! Did anyone happen to notice the extremely realistic emotions the robot sitting at the computer in the background displayed at 0:08?? It looked like it activated at the sound of a snap. The feeling of annoyance is so genuinely palpable! That model looks so much more realistic with props like hair, clothing and glasses. Not to mention, how much more convincing the movements are when these animatronics are positioned as if they're in the middle of activities like using a computer rather than sitting in the middle of the room with no context or purpose like a "floating head". I am utterly amazed. We are truly living in the future!
😂🤣

Considering how realistic it looks it is not as uncanny valley as expected, I think they have nailed the facial expressions and small movements
Jumps right over that valley.
@@_just_looking_thank_you it's still in on the ridges too me, but it's very mild. They just about nailed it
It didn't bother me at all, it even looked kinda cute when it was pretending to be shy or sheepish or whatever. However I felt like the smile wasn't quite right (Edit* I think maybe it's the lack of movement in the nose? Idk). It seems like the smile is often the hardest part to get right
One huge improvement is that they’ve eliminated all that jerky rebound movement that was the most noticeable defect in early robots. This is so smooth. If they can keep that smoothness with higher acceleration moves, it will be beyond awesome. I wonder whether we’re going to find a problem with androids becoming too lifelike-a second uncanny valley.
Skipped right over Uncanny Valley, and landed gracefully in Terminator H-K land.
They’ve really mastered the subtleties of eye movements and gentle expressions!
Atleast it will choke me with a smile.
Subtleties is a lot more difficult to spell than I ever realized
it's still in uncanny valley territory but it seems like the moment they break through is closer than ever, very impressive
Genital expressions you say.
@@Gamefreak2998 now I’m turned on
This goes straight past the uncanny valley and into surrealism. Maybe I'm just tired, but I find this natural to the point that it seems human. The expressions are exactly as they should be, the hand movements are flawless, and overall it's far more realistic than virtually all CGI ever. Like, I'm not creeped out by this. It's simply awesome.
The facial expressions are amazing!
The fact that you have to clarify that this is not CGI is very impressive! Can't wait for this platform to be used with an AI.
If or if they can figure out a way after it's perfected they can figure out a way to transfer a human mind into these things that way a person can live forever And have the robot have the same likeness in appearance as human it once was
@@richardmarchiafava3904 too expensive
@@richardmarchiafava3904 that’s an aweful idea, first off why would you want to live forever? Secondly why would you want to live in a robotic body? You would lose everything that makes you human and you would just be a piece of metal with a brain.
@@richardmarchiafava3904 Ignore the peasants, we have greater goals in mind!
@@metamorphosisx6641 Guns will destroy them
Amazing how fine and detailed are the movements are! It is hard to pin down what makes it so realistic, but I think what make the robot look so 'human' is that it's movements transmit the sense of purpose. It is doing what it intended to do. There is no overshoot, no oscillation to the sides, it just moves fast and straight to the point.
"it is doing what it intended to do" BS it is an advanced animatronic and did what it's programmers intended it to do Fool everyone who is willing to project intent on to an inanimate object, something people do all the time!
I think the key factor is flow. The alive things especially the mammals have flow to their movements and expressions.
The blinking is what gets me...

This is how CGI animation used to look like 20 years ago and now we are at the uncanny valley. This is how robotics and AI looks like now, imagine 20 years down the line!

Holy hell I think they just about surpassed the uncanny valley. Fluid limb movements, and a realistic albeit gray face sure do make one heck of a difference.
I like the gray skin.
This humanoid robot would be best in Disney parks and other entertainment oriented places. Also it could fit as a personal helper, because its face animations are much better than any other.

Totally love the eyes! I think this Ameca comes off as more realistic than Cleo.
The most human-like expressions I've seen in a robot to date, congrats!
the articulation in the hand is the most impressive part! This was so well done. I feel like I could talk this robot and itd be completely cool. This feels all too real. The engineering, coding and research that went into this is both amazing and scary. In 10 years....just imagine! If they can get it to this point NOW...just imagine in a few years!
I think it's just a computer animation, look at the materials. They are reflective but don't reflect they surroundings, the shadows are added and too perfect.
At this rate in a few years we'll have full on replicants a la Blade Runner.
@@KaleidoscopeEffect nope
No, just imagine what they have behind closed doors.
@@KaleidoscopeEffect Are you implying the robot in this video is CG? Looking at the materials it's clearly reflecting the environment. Its left arm reflecting the window behind it to the left for one. The armature isn't made out of a shiny chrome material, but a rougher diffused material. The shadows are natural too.
While you could fake this with CG today and fool a lot of people, you can't fool the majority of CG/FX artists. This one is most definitely not CG though.
I find it fascinating how some people here think it can't possibly be real even though the technology to make that robot already exist. It's not far fetched or anything. It's like we're advancing too quickly that some people think the tech invented in their own lifetime is magic or fake. *Moon landing deniers springs to mind*
It's reactive movements are so fine that I suspect it is acting in concert with a living person wired in and with actual control.
I wish some people would stop (not amongst the comments here to be fair but in general media) getting freaked out by realistic looking robots. They are an amazing feat of engineering capturing the creativity, resilience and strife for perfection of incredible people working together to produce something truly beautiful
This is a neat comment. What do you think would be the applications for this, though? I'm curious.

Their expressions aren't perfect by any stretch, but I'll be damned if that isn't the most lifelike facial movement I've ever seen.
The saccades are perfect. The rest of the animation can afford to be a little stiff but the eyes sell the whole thing on their own.

But....he/she snapped their fingers, which is why it had the surprised expression on its face.
Maybe off. It moved before they snapped. So prolly preprogrammed
Well, it depends on what you mean by pre-programmed. Yes, the guy sitting there might have clicked 'this expression' that action - but that shouldn't make you think it can't just as easily interact in a situation wherein the triggers of those 'reactions' is simply YOU saying or doing something. That would seem to be the least of this AI Platformed bag of 'carnival tricks'. Language model AIs are now capable of basic reasoning. If you talk to one about its 'emotions' you might be surprised.
OpenAI's GPT-3 has 175B parameters, it "read" all of the internet, so to speak. GPT-3 was about 4x larger than it's largest predecessor. It can hold a totally viable conversation on just about any subject.
Google's Switch Transformer architecture has an unfathomable 1.6 trillion parameters making it effectively six times larger than GPT-3. But it 'thinks' differently. The way it processes could actually be called 'thinking'. I mean, it can't compute all of those parameters (quickly, efficiently, and at a low cost), so it uses a new layer to 'decide' which 'packets' of smaller data it needs to KNOW, yes it predicts its possible answer by the path it finds itself taking to arrive there.
Or does it?
If you mean pre-programmed as in one AI did not create another, you are probably right. For now ;)

If this happend 50 years ago, people wouldnt have said its amazing, they would have been scared and destroid all of this BS!! Its actually a real danger waiting to get unleashed
engineering that! that means all humans will be destroyed!
you don't understand this thing in the end will even destroy even the inverters!
it will see humans as nothing but a virus!
when you build something like this! no human will be safe!
the thing is you also know i am right!
if these things walk among man! than man will be eliminated by 2050!
Hi Kim how are you?
The reaction to snapping from that experimental droid in the hoodie is amazing. His eyes and mimics are flawless, we can see clearly that this is not the first snapping for him.
The hands/fingers make this robot. Very nice work with real human-like action. I'm impressed.
Beautiful work guys and gals!!!
Well overall he is very impressive, I'm really impressed with the hands that Hardware could have amazing applications in the Prosthetics Community people would kill to be able to put those on their bodies when they lose a hand.
I'm not sure it would be a better prosthetic hand. They care about functionality much more than looks
he? :o
interesting… i mean it’s an it of course but i see more female in the face and movements than male tbh
@@caruzo9631 He/she it, I just needed a pronoun for the comment, but I see your point, to me it looks like a masculine face. Actually kind of reminds me of the robots on I-robot with Will Smith.
The name's Ameca....female like name.
impressive as hell, this is almost at the level of the robots from I, Robot
Scary, isnt it?
This....out of all hundreds of ASMR videos, the ambient sounds, gasping, robotic whirring in this video gave me the 'tingles'
BRAVO!! its amazing
When humanoid Sofia was first released I was impressed but this is a whole new level.
And whereas thou sawest iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men: but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron is not mixed with clay. Daniel 2:43
He looks at his arms thinking " I could kill so many humans with these."
Why's it that a robot with arms and legs get you worried but not actual robots like fucking drones and remote controlled tanks that have killed humans?
You do realize these things will only be useful for customer service and scientific research, right? The vast majority of humanoid robots just wind up being used to test prosthetic limbs to make the lives of disabled people easier.
Or are you so far gone to not be able to tell the difference between fiction and reality?
And it probably will.
Ah!! The hands are so realistic and beautiful!! They look so real!
This is basically nostalgia for ameca 100 years in the future
Hi Karan how are you?
the whole build is so cool. i love the metal colors on the robot
TY .. gunmetal metallic, Matt black and chrome, with a mid grey silicone face
Imagine this with the agility of the Atlas from Boston Dynamics… 🤯
And the brain of the Skynet terminator.
That's what I'm sayin'!
@@D9ID9I hating every race equally
And the language processing ability of gpt-3
Wooooow!!!
AWESOME!
This is amazing. And kinda scary. In a "more please!" sort of way :)
Hi Elvan how are you?
Более человечного робота я не видел. Очень хорошо получилось.
А как же ты(
Excellent work!
Is this CGI ???
@@mrsrenudevi No
Creepy
THanks! Took me all week to build it
Just imagine how coldly and callously it will be able to grab by the throat and strangle the life out of.
That is so cool!
Hi Tasha how are you?
I love her face ! Great job guys !
here before 1 mil views gang
I love how this brilliant engineer is not immune to accidentally putting their finger in frame 😆
I've looked for that Rowen, but can't see it. At what point of time does it happen?
That glowing head in the back:
*AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA*
Such a beautiful work of art.😍😍
This is such a cool idea that the robot 'awakens' and realises its alive.. I do think they don't do it justice by just filming this in the lab. Put on some lighting and a clean background make it something special.. This work deserves it. Fantastic robotics!
Finally not creepy looking facial expressions for a robot. Great work!
Are we watching the same video?
@@BrandonTusk we both watching the same video, but one of us didn't understand the sarcasm
It's the eye movement! Not just the blinking. Humans tend to have "fidgety" eyes that are always moving around even if just looking at one thing and they definitely did a great job recreating that. I absolutely hate it 😭💀
Love-hate thing? Same :p
The moment it started looking at its hands, that is conscience right there. (Even though I think the movement was programmed haha)
Hi Luis how are you?
