- "The Toronto Subway Song" was a 78 record released by Ozzie Williams and his band in 1950. (This is NOT the same Ozzie Williams who currently leads the Marion Street Band: learning2share.blogspot.com/20...) I happened to stumble across a recording of the song recently, just after I had been looking at the photos in the City of Toronto archives, and they seemed to cry out to be put together. I'm sorry about the constant zooming. It was my first time using the software and I didn't know how to turn off the "Ken Burns" feature.
Lest anyone should look for a political message in this video, I probably should state explicitly that my enthusiasm for the Toronto subway as it is should in no way be taken as an endorsement of the idea of extending it. That's a complicated problem. Building subways in the mid-20th century still made a lot of sense, but the cost has since sky-rocketed, and sadly, no city anywhere in the world is starting a new subway now. It would be nice, but it would cost three times as much as light rail, so it may be out of reach. - Авто/Мото
Great old song and photos!
Ha
The "old" song is actually the official song of the ttc's opening all the way back in the 50s
That was one fun song! The constant zoom-ins were annoying as anything, but the tune was neat!
I'm not a Canadian, but I do love photos of big cities and what they used to be like. And these photos are *history*, showing an active city with action going on. Bloody nice find and a great photo collection.
The theme song on 78 rpm record was released on the London label, recorded by Ozzie Williams..The Toronto Subway Song!
what a cool song. makes you proud to be a torontonian even if the TTC service is pretty bad
Keep your fingers crossed it will improve
your an rt and im a crazy subway XD
:)
@Tomkat 56: So true.
The trains are so damn packed nowadays. I vote for a Queen subway line running east and west to replace the streetcar route.
The city had begun digging the Queen Subway Line in 1939 but stopped shortly after due to WWII. After the war they abandoned the Queen Line in favour of building the Bloor as a cross town line. The city should have built both lines, but now it's too late.
mycompasstv Yes I remember reading something about that. And there's a ghost station near Bay Station which is only used for movies, which I think was supposed to have been built for the purpose of connecting to that Queen line.
Yes you are right Clinton, the ghost station below Bay is an exact replica of the Bay Station above, it is eerie. This station is used for re-routing and they once ran the garbage trains at night through it. Not very often, but if you are lucky a train will travel straight through the ghost station.
I Rather have both Streetcar route and subway Line on Queen
In the event of a technical difficulty and there is NO Cellphone Network Coverage aboard the subway (once you are underground in the tunnels)
Nice one
Canadian cities should have more Canadian identity jingles True Canadians are proud of their cities and infrastructure
Absolutely fantastic. Great song great pictures. Love it.
The building of the first leg of the subway on Yonge from Eglinton to Union was a major undertaking for Toronto. Now, the city is struggling to maintain the subway lines already built, while trying to extend the rapid transit system. I'm just glad that I left Toronto many years ago, because it's not a nice city now. Anyone who thinks that Toronto is a great city now probably didn't live there prior to the mid-1980s, when it had a better life, for the most part.
Imagine if Vocaloid Meiko Haigo was singing this for the 60th anniversary of the TTC in 2014 it would be a great excitement
The Train is gone because this was in 1954 and retired on 1990
I edited in Jan.10 2020

Sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo nice and plz watch so see because it is nice so watch it so please u do I will be on RUclips so go and please check it because it is nice
I LOVE IT
Mel Hamill wrote the song; the singers were Betty Carr and Charles Baldour. The City of Toronto and CBC dredged this out of I don't know what "rotten record bin" for the subway's 50th anniversary in 2004.
TTC was going to use streetcar type subway cars before the gloucester cars were picked. Two subway stations had there platforms cut back to accomadate the 10 foot wide g cars in 1951.
The lyrics:
Now have you heard what's going on in Toronto?
They're digging deeper, deeper every day
The proprietors are raving,
While they're tearing up the paving
The racket is nerve-wracking so they say
And although the noise may be distressing
Still construction is progressing
And we cannot afford a further delay
So with the help of you an me,
And the blessed TTC...
We'll soon have a real subway
CHORUS:
Yes, we’re gonna have a subway in Toronto.
We gotta get the working man home pronto.
So bear the noise with a smile, and in a little while
We’ll be riding in a new subway!
Now it’s generally conceded that a subway here is needed
For the people have to get to work each day
We have men in Deseronto,
Girls who live in North Toronto
And to all of them we have just this to say:
Modern history’s in the making with this hallowed undertaking
And Rome wasn’t built in a day
You may find it’s aggravating
But be sure it’s worth the waiting
For we’ll soon have a real subway!
CHORUS:
Yes, we’re gonna have a subway in Toronto
We gotta get the working man home pronto
So bear the noise with a smile, and in a little while
We’ll be riding in a new subway!
Now with modern engineering
Dear old Yonge Street’s disappearing
By the truckload they are hauling it away (Stay Away!)
Excavation so extensive will doubtless be expensive
But who cares about expenses anyway? (Anyway)
Though we may have open Sundays
There are plenty of Blue Mondays
When the pile drivers start every day
The workmen do the swearing
While the public do the staring
And we'll soon have a real subway (Yes, sir!)
CHORUS:
Yes, we’re gonna have a subway in Toronto.
We gotta get the working man home pronto.
So bear the noise with a smile, and in a little while
We’ll be riding in a new subway!
Don’t take the streetcar,
Riding in a new subway!

And we can’t afford a further delay
So with the help of you and me and the blessed T.T.C.
We’ll soon have a real subway.

Now with modern engineering dear old Yonge Street’s disappearing
By the truckload they are hauling it away (INTERJECTION: Stay away!)
Excavation so extensive will doubtless be expensive
But who cares about expenses anyway? (INTERJECTION: anyway)
Though we may have open Sundays there are plenty of blue Mondays
When the pile drivers start every day
The workmen do the swearing while the public do the staring
And we’ll soon have a real subway. (INTERJECTION: Yes, sir!)
Repeat CHORUS, then:
Don’t take the streetcar,
Riding in a new subway!
expansion plan
line 5 Eglinton LRT (Orange)
line 6 Central Line (Red)
line 7 Finch (Indigo)
Alexander Ip like thats ever gonna happen so soon
well line 6 is actually sheppard east lrt and line 8 is relief line
If only the Sheppard east LRT line 6 is Red (Not Gray) and Line 8 the relief line is *Indigo (Not Turquoise)
*Color between Line 3's Blue and Line 4's Purple
@@CallMeDrewChristian line 6= finch west
line 3 will probably be the ontario line once the SRT is killed
sheppard east = literally any toronto transit plan ever since it will never happen or will be delayed by a significant amount of time
80yrs later n its falling apart ..needs majo lr upgrades
@OofusTwillip Subway to nowhere is a long-overdue expansion? It's more gravy than beneficial.
It’s satisfying.
If they were to build it now it would take 20 years.
Yeah same
What is the name of the song?
you dumbass
Burned Noodle first rude and 2 why
Read the description.
Burned Noodle so you don’t have to be mean about it you could have just said read the dis
DAT song doe
Ye
Don't take the streetcar.
2020: Please Take the streetcar
So line 5 is building 2020 that is right now
did it say blessed or pleasant TTC LOL? i'm mad how the song outlines all the complaints and then proceeds to tell people to basically shut up about it lol
Captain Bly dude this is when they started but now its getting like a few lines
Captain Bly it’s blessed... also there were barely any complaints during that time of the TTC. The reason there are complaints now is because of people immigrating here and causing overcrowding in both the TTC and on the streets.
We have a real subway, so when do we get a real hockey team?
A Real Hockey Team ?
Long Time, Short time, Anytime Keep Your Fingers Crossed
Ooooo
A Real Hockey Team ?
Long Time, Short time, Anytime Keep Your Fingers Crossed
Looks like we finally have a chance
