Onboard USS Joseph Hewes in 1979, had General Quarters for 7 plus hours...so we at Repair 5 got battle messing which consisted of 2 cases of C-rations (opened up from the bottom) for our dinner/supper meal. The C-rats were all dated 1972 and had cigarettes. I was the (un)lucky recipient of the Ham and Lima Beans meal, which of course was the only example out of both cases. Several guys there that day had served during Viet Nam and they were beyond amused at my bad luck in getting what they called "ham and M-F'rs". Did have a pound cake though, so I didn't starve. Wow, the instant reaction the Ancient had to the coffee creamer, priceless!! I was employed as the QC lab tech at a company that made canned chicken. I would check the quality of the hermetic seal on the cans each hour. I'll bet that these cans weren't sealed with a shot of steam that is added just 5 milliseconds before the lid is joined to the can body, then sealed. When the steam cools, you have a vacuum, that greatly increases the shelf life of the product. Not sure if that is the issue, but, more than likely, it is. God bless guys, great videos.

@@MeAncient yup ...I would have loved a menu like that at basic training.
Merry Christmas and happy new year
Botulism in a can. 😁
They stopped adding cigarettes in 1975. Yes pound cake was really good I didn't like The fruitcake that much and the beans and mfers really sucked
No yuck .
Did anyone else cringe when he dumped out the ham and eggs inches from food he then ate with black residue from the leaking cans still on has hands?🤢
I noticed....when I was editing the video.... :-(. TFW, Steven!
@@MeAncient happy you didn't get sick!!
@@stevencsb I've only had a gut bomb twice while eating old MREs. I'm not sure if it was a mental thing or really a physical reaction to what I ate. I have been told that I have a cast iron stomach, pretty much all my life....TFW!
I cant believe youre trying that even at as little bits as youre trying gross lol
Believe it, Craig. TFW
I eat for about a year lost 50 pounds 😢69/70
You smell Botulism!
I have to be careful, for sure.
Do you live in idaho?
Used to live in Idaho. I live in the Southeast now. TFW, Tom.

Excellent! Glad you enjoyed the videos! High Adventure should have one out soon as well. TFW
@@MeAncient well thanks for your service in the USMC. Also have you ever watched Steve 1989 videos. He has some interesting videos. He try’s stuff from ww2 and some stuff is still good. Would you ever be interested in trying something that old?
I don't think even Steve1989 has ever shown a pound cake from that era in that good of condition!
Rebecca, you don't know how much I was hoping it was good enough to eat. They were so good back in the day. TFW
The puond cake is getting dangerously close to those peaches
Peanut 🥜 can be reserved for Eva
The most "elderly" items from C-rats I consumed were Korean war vintage In the early to mid 70s. Candidly, the commercial fruitcake was some of the best to ever come out of a can. I know, I know, some folks dislike all fruitcake, no matter the source and yes most of that stuff is terrible. The canned fruit cake I consumed was close to what GrandMa used to make at Christmas time. NO complaints, sure wish I could find the same except newly manufactured.
Good memories then, eh Jack? TFW
I'm one of the weird guys that actually likes fruitcake. 😄
My great gran and grandma used to make real fruitcake starting in like September. Then soaking them all once or twice a week with a rum/spice/sugar syrup. That fruitcake was to die for.
@@lancerevell5979 You’d love South America at Christmas time then. You can’t go anywhere without walking into fruit cake from giant fake fruit cakes (advertisements) to them stacked all over store windows.
That pound cake is a real treat and tends to hold up well. Glad you found one that was still a winner! Black peaches and pears are typical😕
These videos are so satisfying and fun to watch sometimes funny like this one lol
I appreciate those kind words, Stephanie. TFW!
Please do not taste the baby rattles. HA HA HA.
Might have to reconstitute those cans.......just sayin'. TFW
The creamer turned into Plastic.
It certainly soured.....or something. TFW, Mike!
Per the usual amazing video
You are too kind!
I have a suggestion. Maby a video showing the time temperature stickers the tty round stickers. and what to look for when buying mre meals by the case.
Steve would gobble all that down
I doubt even he would chance black peaches.

Glad you like them! I appreciate that, Aidan. TFW!
I’m furious I’ll never get to taste a c-ration poundcake. BTW, I was trying to eat when you opened those peaches. 😡 😂 Did Jimmy Carter produce the C-Ration PB
himself?

В 1975 в США были жевательные подушечки. В этот же год канадцы приехали играть матч и раздавали жвачку людям. Погибло 20 человек в давке. в 1976 начали делать свою.
should be called harm and eggs....lol
