    You may have noticed the disturbing ship horns that honk all day long.
    The inconvenient sound is coming from the NY Waterway ferries and interrupts our sleep every morning at 6:00 AM.
    Even during the day it's no pleasure. Therefore, we already sent a complaint to NY Waterway: (Bernice Ramos, Customer Relations, 4800 Avenue at Port Imperial, Weehawken, NJ 07086, Office phone is 201-902-8754) email is: ramos@nywaterway.com)
    and we got the reply, "Coastguard regulations!".
    We then wrote an email to: U.S. Coast Guard New York, 1 South Street Room 206, Battery Park Building, New York, NY 10004, (212) 668-7114, email: padetnewyork@gmail.com
    and have not heard anything back until now.
    Maybe everyone who feels stressed out by this could write an email or call them to stop this.

    PS: Mentioned in "The New Yorker" in an article (07/22/2013) from Nick Paumgarten "Kayaktivist"!

    Nice work on the video, sound, close-ups, time-lapse. editing. Great work for a bad circumstance.

    An editor from The New Yorker was here - and he also saw the video. He didn't mention what you are describing here, but he mentioned that "...after forty minutes it began to fray the nerves..."
    After all there is no increase in security, which is pretty obvious for everyone with a brain, but unbearable noise pollution!

    Amendment: This is no harbor. This is just a ferry station, everything is clearly visible for all other captains!

    Hi Wolfgang -
    The honking is required and enforced by the United States Coast Guard to warn other and all watercraft (other vessels, small boats, speed boats, ferries, kayaks, jetskiis, etc) that may be in the direct path of the ferry . This is to ensure safety in the waterway! You will noticed other ferry boats doing the same. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact us directly at alissa [at] nywaterway [dot] com

    you're right, gogo6969, and in addition, all the honking could lead to chaos, it could be confusing if it's coming from all directions. It should be used sparingly as a warn signal in a potentially dangerous situation. I have a sailing license. We were taught to keep our eyes open!!! Large crafts have the right of way and small crafts have to abide by it or they shouldnt' be on a dangerous water like the Hudson river or the ocean!

    Rules are good where they are needed, they are senseless if they are just there to be obeyed... and this is the matter in this case.
    25 years no accident without honking - and now it's important? Come on!

    Okay, change those horns with (heck) flashlights (no noise, but clearly visible) and use the horns only when it's foggy out there!
    All the ferry terminals in NYC are not inside a harbor and the ferries depart every minute. All other boaters should know that they should not stay close to them.
    Not every rule is good just because it is a rule!

    If there would be any kind of increase in security this excessive horn usage could be one possible solution, but please come down have a look and try to figure out if the situation has changed positively because of that noise pollution.
    Ambulance horns and foghorns are absolutely necessary, there is really no question about that!

    I already bought ear plugs, but we have smaller kids... which may need their parents at night!

    I know that you are not responsible... Just imagine every car making a turn would use turn signals and would honk 4 times. The city would be so noisy that no one would want to live there anymore.
    We are in this situation - we hear around 1.000 horn sounds a day - and maybe a flash light would do the same job!

    Who says you couldn't film at the NYC ferry terminal. why?

  • @Gogo6969
    @Gogo6969  11 лет назад

    Just change the horns to flashlights and the noise pollution is gone!
    Use the horns only on a foggy day!
    This is a very simple, but working solution for this problem!

    @Gogo6969  11 лет назад +1

    That's not true. The ferry schedules are the same for years.
    Maybe you would also complain if there would be a new regulation that every car has to honk 4 times while exiting a parking slot - with the argument this could save lives! This maybe makes no sense... right?

    This is the equivalent of moving next to a railroad station, then complaining about the noise of the trains.
    Lower Hudson River and New York Harbor are some of the busiest waterways in the world. Both commercial and recreational. And now more and more people are getting in on the action, so it is becoming necessary for all of the users of the waterway to follow international maritime law. One doesn't need to wait for a major accident to start following basic safety protocols.

    So, how do you feel about running stop lights when you can't see any other traffic?

    Come to Brooklyn where people honk for no reason at all, all hours of the night.
    Buy ear plugs.

    The audio levels on this video have been dramatically boosted above normal levels. What you hear here is not an accurate representation of the actual noise experienced. Don't believe me? Just go there and listen for yourself.

    Stop complaining. 6 is a good time to wake up. Best part of the day and its only working days.

    Gogo, honestly, you ought to venture out into the harbor in a kayak a few times, or speak with a ferry captain, before posting about visibility at ferry terminals.
    All ferries have blind spots -- especially directly aft, which is a big issue when backing up. Weather conditions often make visibility even more of an issue.
    There is a wide variety of skill and experience on the river. While there haven't been any fatalities, there's been a number of close calls. The rules exist for a reason.

    USA - the land of the free, but I have to wake up when the USCG commands it? I thought I'm able to choose it for myself... ;-)

  • @Gogo6969
    @Gogo6969  11 лет назад +1

    No, thanks! ;-) - So why are cars not allowed to use their horns except in dangerous situations? Why do we use blinking lights for cars instead of horns for showing a change of direction? Because it works and people don't go crazy because of the noise...

  • @masontarwater
    @masontarwater 11 лет назад +1

    Sorry, but you chose to live within a few dozen feet of what is known by boaters as The Blue Highway. Horn blasts upon disembarking are one of the ways we keep that highway safe. The recreational community has been lobbying the USCG to enforce these FEDERAL rules for many years and we are deeply gratified that the ferry operators are now following this protocol.
    Also, the shadow of whatever you did to make your cat jump is clearly visible, so don't think you're getting away with that, either.
