Lake George should be mentioned. Bolton Landing among other places. Absolutely BEAUTIFUL !
I believe it was mentioned in the Saratoga town part.Lake George "Queen of American Lakes".I love Bolton Landing!
Lived in Skaneatles for a while and it really is as nice as they described. Upstate NY is a treasure but you better like snow and high taxes to live there.
High Taxes and plenty of Snow, what’s not to love
It's drop dead gorgeous. The taxes are very high.
Westchester county is Upstate new york dagggg
@@deborahencarnacion5114 Wrong dagg. It borders on the Bronx. Hardly upstate.
Grew up in Syracuse, sailed my little Comet on Skaneateles Lake for many years. New York State is a treasure, overshadowed by downstate and it's many problems.
As a native New Yorker I can confirm to anyone unfamiliar with "upstate" this designation does NOT apply to Scarsdale, which is nothing but a very upscale suburb of NYC.
If its north of NYC, its upstate haha. Although I suppose some people consider anything north of Westchester to be upstate.
AGREE 100%
I wouldn’t include Tuxedo Park either.
Agree, New York City folks think all of Upstate NY is just a few miles up the Hudson River. They have no idea about even farther north, so called Northern NY, like Watertown, Tupper Lake, Massena, Malone, Ogdensburg, Plattsburgh… they’ve heard of Lake Placid and maybe the Thousand Islands. When you think you live at the center of the known universe, geography knowledge is too much to expect
Anything above 242nd. St. is "upstate" to some.
The one thing I regret about living in NYC & Long Island is not visiting upstate New York. I had no idea how beautiful it is.
I have fallen in love with Lake George NY. It's beautiful, quiet and the people are very friendly.
Now you know. Go and visit. Rochester is a nice town too. IMHO
I have lived in lake George all my life , we don't like it when you people from the city come up here.
I live in Milan, which is a few minutes from Rhinebeck and I would be happy to provide some helpful information should you decide to visit this beautiful area, easily accessible via Taconic Parkway or Amtrak in Rhinecliff!
Yep
My daughter recently got married in Skaneatles. It was the most beautiful wedding! The scenery was incredibly beautiful and the town has the nicest people! We love it there. Also a big fan of Ithaca. If you like hiking, that’s the place to visit. It’s trails take you to another world!! Amazing ♥️♥️
Skaneateles is my favorite place in NY state. So beautiful.
East Aurora in Erie county is conspicuous by its' absence. Affluent, historic and scenic with a charming downtown. Knox Farm State Park and the Roycroft campus are highlights.
bravo
We need a video just on Hudson valley
He has one.
@@deanchapman1824 Cheater. He created one after their comment ha. I grew up there so gonna check it out.
Westchester County is downstate. It’s not part of upstate. You don’t leave downstate until at least Poughkeepsie
Yep, somewhere between Newburg-Beacon Bridge and Mid-Hudson Bridge.
Scarsdale is not in upstate New York. As you said it's Westchester County. There is a difference between upstate NY and Westchester NY.
You can say that again.
Yeah Westchester is apart of that dump city NYC lol
@@Charbear25 Westchester is not a dump and it's located in New York State, not the city of New York. The difference between the two is like night and day.
F. A. X. S.
U know they call anything North of NewYork City, upstate NewYork.
New video: split this into Western NY, Central NY, and Upstate, NY. You can leave Westchester off the list like you said in the video. 😆
Dated a Westchester girl in College and was soon wearing Lacoste while listening to Dave Matthews…wondering where my life went wrong. Yet, here I am 20 years later switch tickets to ‘Dave’ in April…while living in Texas. 😔🫣🤠
I’ve visited most of these places, very nice. I love skaneatles and Ithaca the most, I’m from Syracuse.
Good to hear!
Sorry to hear that.
@@acornsucks2111what you mean?
Syracuse the ❤of NY. Hiya neighbor
If you want to see some of the stone buildings shown as being in Rhinebeck, you'll have to drive across the river to the corner of John St. and Crown St. in Kingston.
I live in Kingston, and I though that was John st.🧐
So true. It can be complicated doing travel documentaries without the travel. But they do a superior job to many others. Maybe they will do one on the Stone Houses of Ulster County to make up for that!?
That's exactly what I was thinking.
You missed Hammondsport which won the award of "Coolest Town in America in 2012!" Famous for Gleen Curtiss Museum, Bully Hill Vineyards, countless wineries, breweries and distillers. Along with many fine restaurants. Hammondsport is located at the southern end of Keuka Lake one of only two Y-shaped lakes in the entire world! The water is absolutely pristine and some cottage dwellers still drink the pure lake water.
I definitely wouldn’t be drinking any lake water
These towns are all attractive and appealing, and each has its special places of interest. I grew up in Maryland, which is also beautiful, but in a softer way. New York State's offerings are unparalleled! Things to feast all your senses on range from the roughness and wildness of the Adirondacks to the beauty, rarefied air and sophistication found in towns like Rhinebeck and Skaneateles! And take a jaunt to Ithaca to see its famous gorges: they are amazing and unforgettable! Really enjoyed your video! Thanks!
Thank you for watching!
Watkins Glen is a great park along with the state parks along the Genesee River, like Letchworth State Park.
Anytime I hear scarsdale I think about Jean Harris and Dr.Tarnover..
I think of the TV show Maude
I live in the Capital Region. Niskayuna is pronounced NisKEYuna.
As someone who lives here, it's more so pronounced Nisk-AH-yuna but some pronounce it as you stated. most also just call it nisky.
I hardly call Rhinebeck or Scarsdale upstate. To people in Albany and along that corridor such as myself, those towns are in downstate NY. I vote for y’all to find two other true upstate towns that are rich.
I love living in the Hudson valley. We just need to keep it affordable and not to much density. Close to nyc but just far enough away.
Thanks for sharing!
Grew up in Kingston and did residential construction for many years there. You have the same attitude as many , especially the newly arrived "Cityots" : I'm here ! Now shut the door! I don't want anything to change! In my area because of IBM's downsizing people had depressed or flat housing costs for well over a decade. You can't have affordable, and restrict supply, Basic rules of supply and demand. The best you can do is develop sensibly, as in no one group gets everything they want. I remember telling my fellow 8th grade history class that they had no clue how lucky they were to be living where we were. (In 1974!) They didn't believe me! They ,like me, were kids, and hadn't lived any where else yet. Sorry for my kvetching but I think we both love what we have.
My family lived for many years in a suburb of Poughkeepsie. Easy commute to NYC on the train, and yet far enough from the big city to hopefully not having the problems of most big cities now days. Pleasant Valley was a nice town along with other areas across the Hudson River with its small towns and relatively cheaper living.
Downtown Poughkeepsie is in sad shape, but the suburbs and small villages in the area are real nice. Many in the area like to keep it the way it is and not have NYC people move in. Metro North and Amtrak serve the area and the walk across the old RR bridge spanning the Hudson is spectacular. Never thought it would happen, but it did get done.
And how do you propose to keep it affordable 'with not too much density'??
Have you paid attention to real estate or basic economics, like at all.
Rhinebeck is a truly beautiful town! Great way to end the video
I’m surprised Alexandria Bay is not on this list.
When I was working, I went to Albany and I saw so many farms that I felt as though I was traveling through the Midwest! When I finally arrived in Albany, I felt as though I was in Pennsylvania because it looked so much like it... with the shutters on the windows and the gravel sidewalks. Was quite an experience!😳
Albany and PA... the Dutch connection.
1st Props for the pronunciation especially your given tongue. As you point out There are many hidden gems that are eminently affordable. On the plus side well postioned to thrive in the future
At about 9:45, there's a picture of people outside Rough Draft Bar and Books but it's actually in Kingston, NY - not Rhinebeck. Kingston is across the Hudson from Rhinebeck. Also, the observation tower is in Catskill Park which is also not in Rhinebeck.
Ah deception ,deception!!!!!! this is why we cannot believe anything anymore!! The internet just continually make it harder and harder to believe anything!!!
That observation tower is in Ferncliff Forest, a mile or two north of the village of Rhinebeck, although there are many more fire towers still standing throughout the Catskills and the Hudson Valley.
Saratoga Springs native here, my dad paid $32,000 for the house I grew up in haha. (Purchased in the late 70's though).
It’s going to be a nice sale when that happens!

Im from down state Dutchess county but love Saratoga... The people are so friendly
@@dojocho1894 I found most people in Upstate Ny to be friendly. I lived in a little town called Voorheesville, 15 minutes from Thatcher Park, or Downtown Albany. Upstate Ny is beautiful! I was there for the blizzard of 93! We got 37 inches of snow in about 14 hours. I have many fond memories from my time there.
@@charlesprice7608 I remember the blizzard of 93! I don't remember how much snow Saratoga had though. My dad's side of the family is from near Voorheesville in Amsterdam originally, houses are very cheap there still compared to most of NY state.
Ahh Pittsford! My grandparents lived there. Great town. However as a kid we used to go to their place on canandaigua lake every summer and i always thought those home were pretty luxurious.
I lived in and near Ithaca for a few years sometime ago. I loved it, Cayuga Lake, the gorges, and the whole region. If I were to move back to New York State, I would definitely want to live there again.
The very first picture you show of Rhinebeck is a store called Rough Draft Books, which is located in Kingston, NY, across the Hudson River in Ulster County.
Cazanovia will most likely fall off the list once the college closes for good. They defaulted on a 25 million dollar loan.
The second image of Rhinebeck (showing Rough Draft Books) is actually Kingston, NY, not Rhinebeck. Close, but wrong side of the river!
There are TWO Rhinebeck photos that are actually Kingston.
Sadly, I think Cazenovia may be in for a rough time, since the college will be closing after this academic year.
Oh no!
I believe they are going to make it into a Police Academy now, so at least it will be used.
Cazenovia is only a two year junior college. I was accepted into the 1985 nursing program, but I declined as I chose to go to Syracuse University for a Bachelors in Nursing. It was a girls only school back then.
@@colleenpeck6347 you know Cazenovia college ended up turning into a 4-year college? Right around 1986 they went from all girls to co-Ed with a 4 year degree option.

You guys do an incredible job! Your vides have made me decide that my next vacation will have to be to New England!
Go for it!
FYI New York is not part of New England, it was settled by the Duch and called New Amsterdam 😊
New York is not in New England. A very common mistake
I grew up in Hartsdale, NY, from 1950 to
1960, next to Scarsdale and the Golf Course there.
My parents had a children's clothing store there in the 1950's, called the Treasure Chest.
We had many customers from Scarsdale, such as Agnes Carvel, from
the Ice Cream business, Dean Rusks wife, where he became Secretary of
State with JFK, and Snookie Lansing
from TV.
It's true it's a nice place, but snobbish
as stated in the video. 😊
I had my wedding reception in 1969 in The Beckmann Arms. It has surely changed since then.
LOl I have a pic of me when I was young by the cannon on the front lawn of the Beekman arms...do you remember it?
I can think of another town not mentioned, The city of Corning / Painted Post NY, where many Corning Inc. executives call home, including the CEO of the company. Homes here average slightly over $250,000 and can sell for as much as $2 million. I'm not sure what the average income is here, but with so many Corning Execs, it's probably quite high.
The community is within 20 minutes of Keuka and Seneca lakes, where there are many wineries, distilleries and breweries. Corning also has two wonderful museums, CMOG (Corning Museum Of Glass) and The Rockwell western Museum. Strolling down Market Street is an event in itself, where there are many many quaint shops and dozens of wonderful restaurants. The Gaffer District also has many planned events throughout the year, including Sparkle, which is held every Christmas Holiday. Honestly, there is just too much to list, but I can say from personal experience, having lived here my entire life, it is a wonderful community and I couldn't imagine living anywhere else. In a word I would say it is down right special.
I grew up in the finger lakes, Ithaca and skaneatles are nice. Pittsford and other Rochester burbs of Fairport and Penfield are great too. I live in the suburbs of buffalo now, and where I live (Hamburg) and orchard park are really nice. If you want rich, go to east Aurora or Clarence
I'm from South Wales, EA has gotten way more affluent over the past 15 years, but especially the past 6 even. It's a very nice little town, but it was way more of an average looking place when I grew up near there in nineties and 2000's. I'm in the Ithaca area now, and it's pretty lousy compared to WNY in my opinion. The Buffalo area/WNY the best in the upstate, the Rochester area is number 2 and then everything else is considerably below those 2 cities and surrounding towns as far as overall living goes.
@@bigwetbutt Ithaca is nice. I grew up in Watkins Glen nearby and it's gorgeous

At one time before air travel, people from NYC spent the summer in the Catskills. Large hotels were built and then more and more started going to Florida and the Catskills were forgotten except for the hunter, fishermen etc. It has changed somewhat now as many "city folks" have discovered whats up beyond the suburbs of NYC. Land prices have gone up, and many locals have been priced out of the area. But there still are many rural areas in the Catskills.
Oh yeah ,Also Air Conditioning and the federal income tax (1913) The Vanderbilt's had Newport and the Astor's had the Thousand Islands The mansions and Boldt Castle are still there. Unfortunately Astor and Strauss of Abraham & Strauss were lost on the Titanic
The Catskill Mountains are the original home of fly fishing everywhere in the world. No one will tell you that because no one knows that fact.
I love hearing this guy pronounce Niskayuna.
You forgot the lovely village of Owego situated on the Susquehanna and Lockheed Martin. Owego was recently voted “coolest small town” in the US.
Has unemployment improved?
I hope they can share their wealth!
You missed what may be the wealthiest town in upstate New York, Hudson. Hudson was fairly depressed until about thirty years ago, but at that time a new group started moving in and utterly transformed the city. A few years ago Bloomberg said it was one of the twenty-five wealthiest small towns in the United States, along with the likes of Aspen. I recall that Rhinebeck, as nice as it is, didn't make the list.
Beautiful
Thank you! Cheers!
You forgot all about the Rhinebeck Air show that's one of the biggest things to do on the weekend up there

Yes, Ithaca isn't wealthy, but it has pricey real estate because of its lively downtown and surrounding beautiful nature. Educators, professors, and intellectuals aren't known for their wealth!

I used to live in Rhinebeck and loved it. It is a beautiful town with lot of history. That's not upstate, I'm talking ADK upstate. None of these are Upstate. Lake Placid, Saranac Lake are Upstate.
Most Upstaters would love nothing more than to see anything south of Poughkeepsie cut off and tossed in the Atlantic. Just like the Michigan Upper Peninsula, should be a separate state.
Oneida, Ny is number one. Saved you a watch.

Well 1st it's spelled Colonie. Honest it is! take that spell check! (I see it was probably not your fault)

A "town" in New York State is what other states call a "township". What other states call a "town" is called a "village" in New York State. If a place a small and unincorporated, it's called a "hamlet".
Skaneateles is both a town and a village (the village of Skaneateles is located in the town of Skaneateles).

And some Towns have no villages!
Upstate is an old term derived from “up the river.” Referring to the Hudson River. So anything up the river from NYC technically counts with this definition. PS: I have lived in NY my whole life and have lived in both NYC and upstate NY.

Buffalo and Rochester are not "upstate." They are part of the region known as Western New York. The region, with it's adjacent Southern Ontario counterpart is also known as The Niagara Frontier, a reflection of it's status as the home of the Iroquois and Seven Nations indigenous nation.
Well, yes, if you want to play that card, than none of these towns are in Upstate New York. Skaneateles is in Central New York, Ithaca is in the Finger Lakes, Saratoga is in the Capital Region, Tuxedo Park is in the Hudson Valley and so on.

One thing that any NYer living in The Bronx, Queens, Manhattan, and Brooklyn as well as Long Island can agree on is that we don’t really represent or consider “upstate” NY, or Staten Island as part of NY. Staten Island is known as the “forgotten borough” for a reason and well upstate is just there.
