I don't recall that era of footy being a period of intense loyalty at all tbh. I was however more fun and less bloated than it is now. Was even better in the 90s. Now its not even enjoyable anymore.

Back then every team had at least one absolute baller who wasn't afraid to do his own thing on the pitch. Now days everyone moves to a bigger club after one good season and are forced to play in a system or a certain way which doesn't exactly suit their playstyle.

It's way more technical now than then. Just the players with the technical abilities stood out more as the game was more physical and you really did have to rely on moments of individual genius to make the difference in a game.

I view footy nowadays the way my dad viewed footy when I was a kid. There's too much money in it and it's become a circus of over the top glitz and glamour. There's so much emphasis on tactics now and cancelling the opposition out it has made the games boring (not a criticism of managers as they're just trying to win games, but as a consumer its boring). None of the players are even remotely interesting and the fact the football is edging ever closer to European leagues and world leagues, the mystique of foreign football has all but faded away. When I was younger only time you got to see Baggio, or Ronaldo play was either in the World Cup or on European nights. And this added to the sense of occasion. Now its just totally boring. All the leagues play the same style too and the winners are literally just the team with the most money.
