As an American who's lived in Germany for 1 year and Austria for 6 years, I have to say it is so refreshing to see somebody like yourself reinforce so many observations of cultural differences.
Sometimes I think I'm hallucinating, but then to see somebody who's experienced the same things reassures me that I've not gone mad.
There are some differences between Germans & Austrians - apart from dialect.
Like you've said, the Germans are by enlarge very cold or stoic. The Austrians are like Germans in language but like Americans in mentality - much more relaxed. It's almost like whenever a German laughs, it's forced in order to comply with societal customs.
I obviously love Austria; otherwise, I wouldn't live here. There are things you love & hate about every country. I love the mountains, the small villages with cafes, the lakes, train rides, food, beer, hiking, the basic level of civility, the safety (low crime - especially the violent sort), devotion to art, music and animals, etc.
What I hate about Austria is how EVERYBODY stares 😳 It isn't just sometimes - it's everywhere, and it is is V E R Y C R E E P Y !!! Just this morning while driving to work, two bicyclists riding in the opposite direction literally stared at me till the last inch we passed by and their periphery would no longer enable staring.
When I go jogging, walkers & hikers on the trail literally stop, turn around and stare at me till I've passed by - so cult-like and uncomfortable. 99% of the time I pretend like I don't see them, but every once in a blue moon I play stare-back to see how long it will take the peeping Toms to finally exercise some manners and look away - they never do!
Last month I traveled to America for the first time in 3 years, and the reverse culture shock was unbearable. The shock was compounded by the fact that I traveled on business to L.A. - out west I feel like an alien ... I feel far more at home in Austria than in California.
The first shock were all the fat people dressed like bums - really sad to see what has happened to America.
The 2nd shock was how insanely, indescribably horrendous LAX Airport is.
Airports are supposed to embody the best & brightest that a city has to offer in terms of architecture, efficiency, modernization, etc.
I could not believe my eyes - filth everywhere.
And the rental car agencies aren't even located in the airport - you have to take a decrepit shuttle bus to the rental car agencies, where a mere 2-mile drive takes a whopping 45 minutes!!!
I cannot begin to imagine how many passengers miss their flights every single day due to this unforeseen disaster.
Then, after waiting another 45 minutes in line at the highly inefficient rental car agency, the lady called Latasha at the counter was so rude I could not believe my eyes.
Without even granting me the decency of showing a little eye contact, she kept her head down and smugly said name, ID & credit card.
She couldn't even be bothered to respond when I said "good morning".
This type of animalistic behavior would NEVER EVER happen in Austria.
When I finally picked up the rental car, I noticed that the front bumper fascia's clips were partially unfastened (I'm guess the previous driver had backed away from a high curb that grabbed the fascia's underside).
I brought this to the attention of the rude parking garage attendant who simply said to fill out a form and hand it to the guy at the exit gate, which I did.
Then I drove for 5 miles where the fascia was shaking violently and making a loud noise.
I returned to the airport - another traffic nightmare - and exchanged the car.
The lady at the counter did not even bother to offer an apology or anything for all the inconvenience.
When I returned a week later, after dropping off the car, I was again on a shuttle bus, this time heading to the airport.
It was getting dusk outside, and the pretty girl sitting across from me was very scared about having to get off the bus soon, and then walk to her hotel adjacent to the airport.
Why? Because despite the fact that we were in the immediate vicinity of LAX, the level of criminals all over was staggering.
The police there (or better yet the politicians) are not even capable of creating a safe environment for families or single girls - many of whom travel from around the world and are oblivious to the high crime.
    Think I'm kidding?
While filling up the rental car at the gas station located literally within 1 mile of the airport, I was approached by more junkies and criminal types than I could count.
It was like the worst horror movie - only a movie so bad that no one would ever believe.
Long story short: as much as I miss so many things about America (football, baseball, live music, wide openness, fishing, etc.), there is not a chance in hell that I will ever move back to the country that I fought to defend for four years.
It's a lost cause - and you can see it's getting worse by the day.

Sehr gut.
