Increases your chance to communicate a tiny bit with foreigners. Its also useful to know the Sentence "i can speak english a little bit 🤏". Most people, who are able to speak english, may it their first language or not, will most likely default to a basic version of english and try to communicate with you. See it this Way. Depending what Language-family is, english is probably an "easy" to learn language for international travel. If you would attempt to learn more difficult languages, it will be harder to communicate with natives, because they will probably speak rather fast in their motherlanguage. For the majority of Humans, english is the second language. They will not be as fast as in their motherlanguage AND they know the struggle of learning it, means they can understand YOUR struggle to communicate with few english words. (btw. English is my 2. Well I got to explain something. I understand that japanese people try to be as polite as possible and are very scared or stressed in that kind of situations. But these people on the airport, you must remember that's literally their job to help you and answer your easy or silly questions (where is the toilet, where to go for taxi, where is your gate). As a mariner (working on sea ships) I travel a lot around the world. Last time I travelled i met two kinds of persons. In Amsterdam I remember that KLM employees on check-in were very patient, nice and helpful. I had problem with checking my baggage (my padlock for the bag felt off and caused error on the weight). They helped me solve the problem very nicely, printed out boarding pass and directed to the safety check queue (rebuilding + covid restrictions on Schiphol). Second time I was repatriating to my country through Hamburg airport (Germany), the woman on the check-in had such german accent with the English I couldn't understand her anyhow. She asked for the things I just never heard of, I've just passed all the travel documents. She just looked very impatient and irritiated. I said "sorry but I don't clearly understand you and I don't understand what you want from me to show, I just pass you everything there". Very angrily she printed the boarding pass and didn't say anything in return. I was just perplexed and kinda sad, but that was clearly her attitude fault. Don't be scared. You are the passanger and if you are behaving nicely and kindly, or even if they see you are stressed and anxious, THEY SHOULD TRY THEIR BEST to help you out.
As long as you are not in a rush, going through an airport isn't a problem even if you have no idea what you are doing and bumble through everything. So first time traveling, just plan to be stuck there for a while.
For everyone scared of airports: I have not traveled a lot in my life but from the few flight trips I was on, airports have a lot of huge signs that make it hard to get lost, sometimes you can get confused for a short while but usually quickly you will find your way. As for people talking to you, people talk to you slowly and quietly because they are tired and in Germany they talk to you in english unless you start talking to them in german.
This reminds me of this one time a Chinese guy that basically didn't speak a lick of English was trying to get somewhere and was trying to get some help with busses to get to a place. After trying, unsuccessfully to understand and help him out, I thought "hey, I use DeepL to read Japanese novels, maybe it'll be good to use it here." So, yeah, if you ever find yourself in that situation, MTL's better than nothing.
i worked for 11 years at a small german airport, and we managed to find a solution to everything. hands, feet, google translate. we even got some employees taking some stranded passengers home for a night. i think there is nothing to be afraid of.
