Rally Group B - Tribute

This is a tribute to the rallying of the middle 80's, when Group B monsters dominated the championship. There were no serious restrictions for the cars and no limitations for developing, the tracks were extremely dangerous and the crowd were as close to the cars as possible. As the result of rapid evolution the cars became as powerful as F1 cars and it was too much for human abilities to keep them on the nasty roads on the limit. In 1986, after several horrible crashes, FIA banned Group B rallying forever.

the 80's was the golden age of the automobile and motorsports, we had group b, we had 253 mph le man cars that could match speeds of formula 1 cars, we had Senna, Prost, production cars could surpass 200 mph, we had the first production cars with carbon fiber, we had the worlds fastest car (197 mph Porsche 959) going to the Dakar rally and winning, we had the record breaking speeds at nascar shaving over 212 mph, we experienced the last days of rallying for Porsche, Lancia, Bmw and Audi, family cars would do 120 mph and it would be like nothing (bear in mind, 120 mph was the 80's equivalent to 160 mph which is fast for today's standards in my book), we had everything. why can't we have that again.

      Brilliant words!
GROUP B was a one in a life time experience, they (personally) were the most insane days of any Motorsport, some might disagree but wrc although technologically superior, but in terms of entertainment, health and safety virtually Zero, pure power without any restrictions like today's wrapped up in cotton wool society and the ability to touch the things (if you had the balls) the drivers having the balls to even drive the things like the S4 with the petrol tank under both driver+co arse plus the handling of one that was at times as controllable as a shopping trolley are far superior than today's wrc,the list is endless, anyway!
DON'T CRY BECAUSE IT'S OVER, SMILE BECAUSE IT HAPPENED.

    Wow, moments captured in time.
The stage was set. From the tires, engines, cars, people, drivers. To get a moment of Group B supercars hurdling down a road. It's such a blessing that we have this footage of these cars and drivers in their hayday. Though not there now, at one point in time all these things came together in a scene, captured in video and are like memories from another era. Photos and videos are amazing, you can capture the look/"aesthetic"/feel/memory/experience of a certain point in time, and pass it on to those who haven't been there and experienced it.

This is the greatest sport ever create because there were no regulations. It was about being brave and striving to push those cars to the limit. It wasn't about how fast your car is, it was how fast the driver was willing to go. Many drivers died in group b but we know they were willing to die because they loved the sport. It is a shame it only lasted three years but when we look back we will all know the greatest drivers came from group b rallying.

Raw power doesn't mean faster if over all the driver can't control it well, in the narrow and slippery rally stages, group b cars are sledgehammers while what came after that are precision tools for comparison...

And the press photographers (who stood in the middle of the road to get a shot of an oncoming car and jumped out of the way at the last second, you can see them in the first minute).

I remember being at Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire watching these fire breathing monsters, on one section of road there was a Rover SD1 cop car with four traffic coppers sat on the bonnet, they wasn't there to keep the peace or nab speeding rally cars, but had a speed laser speed gun on loan from the USA and was 'testing it out', I watched a copper point the gun at a 6R4 coming around one corner, the gun recorded some 80mph, then within 200 metres the gun was reading some 148mph.....The look on the coppers faces was pure excitement.

Jesus isn't a real person so he can't be a racing driver... 😁
These days the cars are great, the drivers are great. That's for sure...
In the old days the cars are monsters and the drivers were gods....

This is the best background song for Rally I have ever heard. It brings lot's of nostalgia. Not memories for me, because I was born 1977, but definitely would've want to see Group B in reality. It's astonishing. Extremely well put video with the pace notes. Thank you!!!! I play Dirt Rally 2.0 on my racing simulator with Lancia Delta S4 on this song as a background, even have Lancia emblems on it 😄. Such a successful company, I can't believe they don't exist anymore or at least they are not the same at all. 👍

The story of Group B, the most insanely dangerous racing series ever known to man. There were virtually no restrictions and the series produced some of the most crazy race cars ever. Group B was so dangerous that it only lasted four seasons before it was abruptly cancelled after a number of crashes resulting in driver and fan fatalities.

In the UK it's sad - they gave up after the Delta and withdrew to the continent, never to return. It's like they finally built a practical and very fast hot hatch that didn't rust, but it was too late.
