    the 80's was the golden age of the automobile and motorsports, we had group b, we had 253 mph le man cars that could match speeds of formula 1 cars, we had Senna, Prost, production cars could surpass 200 mph, we had the first production cars with carbon fiber, we had the worlds fastest car (197 mph Porsche 959) going to the Dakar rally and winning, we had the record breaking speeds at nascar shaving over 212 mph, we experienced the last days of rallying for Porsche, Lancia, Bmw and Audi, family cars would do 120 mph and it would be like nothing (bear in mind, 120 mph was the 80's equivalent to 160 mph which is fast for today's standards in my book), we had everything. why can't we have that again.

      Brilliant words!
      GROUP B was a one in a life time experience, they (personally) were the most insane days of any Motorsport, some might disagree but wrc although technologically superior, but in terms of entertainment,health and safety virtually Zero, pure power without any restrictions like today's wrapped up in cotton wool society and the ability to touch the things (if you had the balls) the drivers having the balls to even drive the things like the S4 with the petrol tank under both driver+co arse plus the handling of one that was at times as controllable as a shopping trolley are far superior than today's wrc,the list is endless,anyway!

    This is the greatest sport ever create because there were no regulations. It was about being brave and striving to push those cars to the limit. It wasn't about how fast your car is, it was how fast the driver was willing to go. Many drivers died in group b but we know they were willing to die because they loved the sport. It is a shame it only lasted three years but when we look back we will all know the greatest drivers came from group b rallying.

Raw power doesn't mean faster if over all the driver can't control it well, in the narrow and slippery rally stages, group b cars are sledgehammers while what came after that are precision tools for comparison...

    Wow, moments captured in time.
    The stage was set. From the tires, engines, cars, people, drivers. To get a moment of Group B supercars hurdling down a road. It's such a blessing that we have this footage of these cars and drivers in their hayday. Though not there now, at one point in time all these things came together in a scene, captured in video and are like memories from another era. Photos and videos are amazing, you can capture the look/"aesthetic"/feel/memory/experience of a certain point in time, and pass it on to those who haven't been there and experienced it.
    RIP everyone who died because of Group B.

      @Gp2 Engine That's a very sterile view of the world. There is an element of danger in anything worth doing, and managing that danger in a way that is acceptable to you is part of doing it. What would motorcycling be without the morbid thrill in the back of your mind that you were a mere inches from disaster at every second? Part of why these men are so legendary - Group B, classic Grand Prix, is that they pushed their abilities and their machines to the very limits of their capabilities. It's thrilling to watch an aerobatic pilot enter a flat spin because you are watching someone dancing with a machine that they have taken the time to get to know as a lover, and they are dancing with that machine on a knife's edge. Not trying to be snarky, but if you want safe motorsports, then e-racing is what you're after. But for some the thrill of flirting with disaster calls too loud to ignore. They raced Group B. They ride the Isle of Man. They fly the Extra 300.

    • @Chris-hq7nl
      @Chris-hq7nl 4 года назад +1

      Gp2 Engine I’m in the process of building a vintage road race inspired Corvette, so I think your Audi project is cool. Ultimately though, isn’t the choice of whether danger is acceptable up to those involved? Nobody forced the drivers to race. Nobody forced the spectators to stand in the road and on the shoulder. I don’t think we should be wantonly dangerous. I pull triple digit speeds on a bike sometimes. I’m not doing that in my skivvies. So I’m not advocating throwing caution to the wind but there is a gain in doing things that are inherently unsafe, and that is testing oneself and one’s mettle. I’m guessing that you’re British, but I’m sure you’re familiar with American Football. One of my favorite sports and I played for years. If we had a rugby league around me I’d probably look into going out for a team there. Both of those sports are admittedly dangerous, but that’s part of the allure. That danger teaches you about yourself and where your own limits are. That’s why Group B is wonderful. There’s nothing glamorous about a driver and navigator burning to death in a car at the bottom of a bluff. But there is something glamorous about two men getting into a wild machine where they know death is a possibility and trying to tame that machine better than any others can.

    When i was a kid, my uncle used to take me to some stages in Rally Acropolis, near the village my mother was born at, during our summer vacations when all families would gather. There was something magical, not just in watching those madmen drive, but just being there, in whoknowswhere, actually risking your life just to watch them.
    And im all for safety, growing up i appreciate the turn that motorsports have taken and i respect and i understand it. But i also came to realize that it was just... different. Everything was different exactly because of that risk that everyone involved was willingly taking. And its normal that it breeds different drivers and a different audience too. Its just, different.
    Of course most of it is nostalgia, but i honestly believe, that the circumstances do play a huge part in how the drivers shape up. To this day its just magic to me. They were magicians.
