    Just some points to consider:
    1) Don't get the lower-ratio rear end, and you don't lose anything except maxing out on towing capacity. You can have the crew cab, AWD, and better fuel economy than the gasser, especially under load.
    2) The EcoDiesel has a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) and used DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid), so it *shouldn't* stink or smoke like an untreated diesel. This negates the speaker's "livestock won't like it" argument. A properly operating diesel *should* produce fewer emissions that compared to a gasser with similar hauling ability.
We'll see how reality measures up to the "shoulds".

Just traded in my 2017 Ram Rebel Hemi, which I loved, for a 2019 classic 1500 eco diesel. A few less options but very similar ride. I don't like sun roofs. The only thing I think I will miss is the 4 wheel air suspension which worked very well for me. My girl says the ride or seats are more comfy. I live in the country so keep this in mind. My Rebel was giving me 20-25 mpg. The Eco is giving 32-36 mpg. With the dealer discounts, the Eco was cheaper. I also find under load or light city driving the difference is more noticeable. Go figure. City driving empty or heavy load the diesel really shines. I will not be surprised to see my fuel bill cut in half. Hope this helps.

John Perkins great feedback. What axle ratio do you have in your ecodiesel and what trim package per the classic option?

Putting aside dealer markup (?), you can configure a pretty basic big horn ecodiesel, 3.92 rear gear ratio, 4wd, etc. at low 40s. I managed to configure my "dream" ecodiesel at just under $44k. That said, I dont see the need in alot of tech in honestly, any modern vehicle as it just inflates the price and is one more thing that can fail, to each their own.

Good to see you back, Perkins.😉 I'd stick with the 5.7 V8 myself.... the VM Motori ecodiesel (an oxymoron for certain) has had a long history of cam gears and timing chain failures, and the high pressure fuel pump is failure-prone too. I'll stick with the HEMI. Good, informative, comprehensive review and beautiful scenery.🐻🐨😝

Daniel Gross......My wife has the 2014 Grand Cherokee with Eco Diesel, now with 81 K miles, and Grandson has 2014 RAM Eco Diesel with 90 K miles, and neither have experienced what you are saying! Further, the new 3.0 L Eco Diesel is 80 % new compared to the 2014-2016 Eco Diesel.

without getting into all the technical stuff regarding pulling the max load most of the time.... the fuel cost per mile is 20-25% higher on a diesel and that does not take into consideration the added cost of the engine or additives for winter and extra maintenance costs. I pull a large pontoon a few times / yr with my hemi and am very satisfied with the overall performance. Without a load on flat level ground like the Pa. turnpike I can get 24+ mpg. Can anyone tell me why the hell diesel fuel is so much more than unleaded in our country and in europe diesel is less expensive than regular fuel???

This truck is crazy expensive. Costs more than the 3/4 and 1 tons and is not comparable. This is a car engine not a truck.

Wish they’d just downsize the reliable 6.7 Cummins to a smaller V8 diesel for the 1500s... that would be epically popular but no it has to be the watered down ‘ecodiesel’.

Another awesome review, Mike! It almost makes me want to own one of these myself, but not with the diesel engine. Please give my thanks to Carl, too.

I don't understand what he is talking about when it comes to the exhaust.. that is a very common set up especially with older trucks and not to mention that being a diesel with def fluid there is little to no exhaust fumes

Got to take in consideration extra fuel and maintenance cost as well. And a truck is not a truck without being a 4x4.

Did you calc your mpg at the pump or use the dashboard reading?

Great review Mike - love these trucks after watching Animal Kingdom - diesel makes sense when fuel much more expensive albeit a Ford Raptor maybe more fun to own if city based

The day the ram 1500 with eco-diesel and 3.92 rear end gets 30 mpg that is the day I switch unless the V8 is only a couple mpg below it still and then it still doesn’t make sense.

Obviously a guy that doesn't like higher end trims & diesels. I don't believe his MPG numbers without an explanation of how he arrived at them. Lot's of personal bias in this one.

    • @MikeDPerkins
      @MikeDPerkins 5 лет назад +2

I'll freely admit that I usually don't find higher-end trims worth the money, and I also find that diesels generally fail to live up to their advertised economy unless under very specific circumstances. Can't argue how well they handle work, though! I definitely spent more time in stop and go versus highway over my week's worth of testing - probably 60/40.
