I didn't think I'd sit thru your video, but it was really interesting! I feel encouraged, even excited to complete the book myself, thank you! Right now I'm still learning to color individual items such that completing whole pages seems a long ways off but Im getting there. God bless you! And you did great on those two copies!
Seeing your two versions was absolutely fascinating! Your progression as an artist is clearly seen, as is your confidence. I'm a beginner and my pages show that I am a new colorist; but your two versions give me hope. Thank you so much for sharing!
It really is, come to think of it. I really like one of her books but I don't use colored pencils so found that the paper made it difficult for what i wanted and putting it in a home copier wasn't working. I finally started putting velum over the prints i liked most and traced them so I would essentially have a print of my own to do with a thousand ways. Then said fuck it, finally just went ahead and cut the page out and now i I find the pages sweet spot (because even tho the pages are larger the print itself isn't even quite 8.5x11 in actual size) so now I'm gonna try some of the challenges you've mentioned trying yourself and see if I can't force myself into something new while still discovering what it is i like
First of all - I am super impressed that you have actually finished BOTH copies! Wow - what an achievement! I lapped up looking at each comparison - so interesting to see how you coloured in each version and all of them an inspiration.
Thank you. I am now working through my second copy of Enchanted Forest but as one double page spread took me two weeks it could be a long while until I can do another comparison video!! Especially with Johanna bringing out a new book in April!
It is great to see your colouring transformation. I love the way you added some background and they are quite lovely. I am a beginner, and my stage is at your first book. Need to hone my skills, my patience and my hand stroke. Your video gives me hope towards that aim. so thank you!!
Absolutely stunning work! I’m trying to complete the book right now myself and I think you’ve inspired me to buy a second one. What a fantastic way to sharpen your skills, eh? Absolutely gorgeous work. Love seeing your progress.
I've been coloring for years, but picked up many things that will improve my art. Particularly you techniques of shading, highlighting, and creating depth. Thanks for being such a giving person.
Beautiful work! It's amazing that you've completed both books. Comparing the two, it's evident that you've made significant progress-the newer pieces are richer in color and detail. I also see how well-coordinated the colors are in your new book; they complement each other beautifully. Thank you for sharing this with us!
Wow. You just turned up as a recommended video, and I was absolutely riveted the entire time. I'm a beginning colourist and there are some lovely ideas in both the 2013 and the 2020 versions for colours and approaches. This is wonderful. Thank you so much. Now I'm off to investigate your other videos.
What a beautiful accomplishment to color 2 books completely. Your evolving style and skills are very encouraging to a beginner like me. Thanks for being such a positive influence.
Absolutely beautiful 🥰❤️ it's a great feeling when I finished my first adult coloring book. Haven't finished any of the others yet. Enchanted forest was the one I finished. I loved it so much. I bought a second one. Happy coloring to you and have a wonderful Saturday! ❤️❤️❤️🌹🌺🌼🍄🍄🍄🍄🍄

Rachel, it is simply astonishing how much more vibrant your colors have become in a few years !!!! First time I see anything like it ! You are amazing! Congratulations! 🦋😉😎

Absolutely beautiful ! You are so very artistic already but the second time round the images are so much more mature and skilful! Really inspiring thank you for sharing ❤!
Thank you Rachel your video was very interesting. I'm new to colouring and seeing your work has inspired me to persevere even though I'm not very confident.
I am so pleased. Do keep going it is so worthwhile and practice makes such a big difference. Be careful comparing yourself to others, we are all different and start in different places and have different amounts of time to practice and learn. It should be about having fun and enjoying yourself and improvements will come naturally.
I really enjoyed this video Rachel,Ive got a few of Johanna Basford's books, but I always found them a bit intimidating, probably because I've seen so many of them beautifully done and completed, like yours are,and think I could never achieve the same, but Ive dug them back out,and got a batch of new books over the past 3 days,3 by Kerby Rosanes,,and the Disney one by Thomas Kincade, which is stunning and I'm terrified to go near it in case I ruin it lol I need to be braver :) The Kerby ones are amazing, the artwork is gorgeous and I'm a bit scared of them too, just don't want to ruin such beautiful books, but I will have a go and hopefully produce something halfway decent :) Looking forward to seeing more of your work :),thanks for the inspiration :)
Thank you, try to be brave with your books. Remember the artist wants you to colour them in and you can always buy another copy of you don't like what you did in it! I have flip throughs of most of Johanna's books that I have completed, so if you need more inspiration so take a look. Hope you have fun with your books
Loved this!! Forget Book Club. I need a Color Club. I am trying to determine what you used in a lot of these. I'm a newbie and am missing what you're identifying
Thank you very much. I am hoping to finish my second copy of Enchanted Forest soon and do another similar video as I found it so interesting to do myself! I think I have about 40 pages to go though!
@@RachelHendersonColouring that’s fabulous….I used to draw and colour a lot but then had a break of several years, just getting back into it now and love it again!
@@RachelHendersonColouring thankyou. I have other colours but not gold, but I have never tried doing a background with them. I might have to try this but will need bigger nibs, as I only have fine line ones. Im just starting out in this colouring world.
The colouring in both books is just delightful to see! I have a question though: you refer to the “artist’s edition” of the books. Would you mind explaining what that is please? Thanks!
thank you. For Secret Garden, Enchanted Forest and Lost Ocean there was an Artist's Edition published. This was a slightly bigger book, with a smaller selection of pictures on one side of the page only and on thicker paper. They were designed so that you could complete pictures in alcohol markers, paint etc which could potentially soak through the paper without spoiling a picture on the back. They were also perforated so they could easily be removed for framing.
I used a PC-1MR and they do not bleed through as long as you use a book which has been printed in the last few years as the paper has changed, I did not layer it up.
Both books are absolutely beautiful - I wonder if your style in the first book would have been different if you'd used the Derwent pencils to start with. You've clearly developed a lot more confidence - what an amazing achievement. I was going to avoid this book because of the text instructions, which I find too distracting, but you mentioned whiting it out? I may have to try that on one of her other books to see if it works for me.
Lol, I did not realise I said it that often!!!! I used white gel pen or posca pen to erase the text. It doesn't give a perfect result but works well enough for me!
2 questions: 1, where do you get your colouring challenges? It sounds fun, I want to join! 2, on the page opposite the scarecrow, what was the technique for the blue background (around the branches)? Thanks!
Colouring challenges are from Facebook groups I am in 'Johanna Basford Your Pages' is the one I belong to that is running lots at the moment. The blue sky around the branches was just lots of blending with different shades of pencil. I used several Derwent Lightfast pencils which are really soft and are easier to blend than some other brands. I basically applied a darker shade (either pink or blue) then faded it out a bit with a lighter one and then used a very pale shade to blend over it, mix them together and spread them out more. I hope that helps!
I have got a video showing some tracing - ruclips.net/video/-sLCvCp4wFc/видео.html However if there was something more specific that you had in mind please let me know and I will see what I can do!
I have an old copy of Secret Garden and the paper is really rough, its really hard to layer pencils on before the paper starts to ‘splinter’ (can’t think of a better word for it, literally little paper splinters break away). Is the paper in the newer books smoother / better? I have totally avoided all Johanna’s subsequent books due to how bad the paper is in Secret Garden
The paper has really changed over the years. The first printing was not good but it improved on the second printing and has been changed a few times. Johanna now picks her own paper so it is now thicker and smoother and can take lots of layers of pencil.
