I was watching confused because even if they were surprised, I'd have thought they'd at least use what they had learned prior to try and live but I'm not great at real time games cause I'm easily distracted so I can't fault them

Every other fight had you with the initiative to attack first (which means you chill in the menu before you have to dodge anything) so most of them were metaphorically caught with their pants down, fingers not in position to dodge and being baffled both by being attacked first and Sans's already deadly and fast series of attacks. Basically how every regular monster shmuck felt facing us.
It's something hardly any of us realize at the time, but the thing that's the most difficult about the first time is that he attacks first, unlike every single one of the other monsters

I just noticed he isn't insulting the player by calling us an old lady. But talking to Toriel, but doesn't know her name but calls her "Old Lady". 6 years, and I've never noticed.

I really like the thing that Chara says to you. That when HP - ATTACK - DEFENSE - GOLD - LvL - EXP increases, that feeling.. is me. So that nice feeling you get from seeing your character grow stronger and grow more capable, that nice feeling of progress that makes you want more, that feeling IS CHARA. It's a really cool and makes you think, look at what you did to so many monsters just because you wanted to see what would happen. You killed countless.. just because you NEEDED to see what would happen. It's fascinating. Truly Fascinating.

His attack is more like 1 dmg per frame
But he always dodges and ignores your post-hit invincibility frames
