One of my favorite songs by Dylan (and not just because I was born “on the fifth day of May”!). A strange, spooky story of adventure and love. Virtually every verse sparkles with unique, emphatic, and often FUNNY vocal phrasings (at least they make ME smile/giggle.) Sweet strings from Scarlet Rivera. Devilish drum rolls by Howard Wyeth (who also plays the piano on this!). Isis, oh Isis, you’re a mystical child. What drives me to you is what drives me insane. I still can remember the way that she smiled. On the fifth day of May, in the drizz-a-lin’ raaiiin…!
The love for our greatest living artist in the comments is palpable. We know he’s unmatched, right up there with Picasso and Shakespeare, easily one of the best artists of all time.
My dad had all of the Bob Dylan albums when I was growing up. He also had the Beatles, Kingston Trio, Nat King Cole, Stan Getz. I never got into Dylan. Later on, as a young teen, I bought this album. It blew my mind. Emmylou and the violin. The songs, especially Isis.
im annonymous I don't know, but I think they had a little fling. Judge by her eyes, how she looked at him, I would definitely say yes. But Bob had so many women around him. Everybody wanted him. If I had been on that special road trip, I had wanted him too. Tell me who wouldn't...💜☮️☸️💜
Amazing cruising tune.........driving out east in 1978 on the Long Island Expressway by myself in my '68 Pontiac LeMans in the middle of the summer at 2:00 AM and listening to this Dylan classic when I was a philosophy major at LIU. It all just seemed so right back then and at that time.
"I came in from the east, with the sun in my eyes. I cursed her one time, then I rode on ahead" Makes me teary eyed every single time. Feels like time stops when I hear it.
I know a girl named Isis, named after this song because she was born on the fifth day of May. They changed her name because of world events, actually uses her middle name now.
Bob Dylan's good friend, Gordon Lightfoot, died on May 1, at age 83. Bob once said that when he hears a GL song, he doesn't want it to END. I saw GL 7 times from 1968-76, in Vancouver, B.C. I wrote to GL a week before died, but will never know if he read my letter. I once corresponded with a gal on Classmates, who sat behind Bobby Zimmerman in home room, at Hibbing HS. Her boyfriend taught Bobby to play the guitar. HURRICANE, starring Denzel Washington, is a fantastic movie. Denzel won the Oscar. I read Carter's memoirs written in prison, which was well written. When he was finally released from prison, Ruben moved to Toronto, and helped unjustly accused citizens. The young man who had read his book is now a lawyer, practicing in Vancouver. - Peter R. Whitmey (rare spelling), Abbotsford, B.C.

What a great vocal. An epic song; Egyptology meets New Testament. I was a kid in the 1960's but this was my time for discovering Dylan. How can one man write so many extraordinary songs? Someone should tell it simply isn't possible, Robin Witting
I like a lot of music but with Dylan it's hard to put into words what his meant to me in my teen years in the 70's. It's just .... I can't explain ....
I remember back in mid '70s high school the football team getting drunk after a win at a party all breaking out into this song trying to get as far as they could into it. Freaking hilarious!
This was a tremendous album, and he had so much before it. I realized a few years ago, I don’t listen to Bob Dylan songs, I watch them. He brings you through so much detail and tells such a wonderful story in a few minutes that it’s like watching a movie.
Dylan's vocal delivery on this song is one of the great tour de forces in all of rock music. Song reminds me of being super stoned and driving to the Huntington Library with my sister and her friend about 25 years ago.
The writing style in this song approaches Shakespeare as many, many of his songs do. The last verse is just so clever: he leaves you to imagine the conversation in a way that engages the listener like very few can. And those that can are not anywhere as prolific as Dylan; except maybe Neil Young

The dividing line ran through the center of town

Went in to a laundry to wash my clothes down.

I was thinking about Isis how she thought I was so reckless.
How she told me that one day we meet up again
And things would be different the next time we wed
If I only could hang on and just be her friend
I still can't remember all the best things she said.
We came to the pyramids all embedded in ice
He said "There's a body I'm trying to find
If I carry it out it'll bring a good price"
It was then that I knew what he had on his mind.
The wind it was howling and the snow was outrageous
We chopped through the night and we chopped through the dawn
When he died I was hoping that it wasn't contagious
But I made up my mind that I had to go on.
I broke into the tomb but the casket was empty
There was no jewels no nothing I felt I'd been had
When I saw that my partner was just being friendly
When I took up his offer I must-a been mad.
I picked up his body and I dragged him inside
Threw him down in the hole and I put back the cover
I said a quick prayer and I felt satisfied
Then I rode back to find Isis just to tell her I love her.
She was there in the meadow where the creek used to rise
Blinded by sleep and in need of a bed
I came in from the East with the sun in my eyes

I'll never forget a boyfriend of mine who was a musician playing this and saying he wished he could have the same genius where he didn't need a lot of words and the immense tonal richness with which he wanted to imbue his own music ... he was so right about that .
Its ALL genius. I hitched up my 🐎
yes.
..but l knew what he had on his mind..
head and shoulders his best album, every song good!
My absolute favorite Dylan song.....from a long and distinguished career.
Hello dear, it’s nice meeting you on here.
Mine as well. His best story telling
You get it! We notice the same things :-)
Do you get the feeling Isis would tell a slightly different story? 👸🫄👰🤠
Happy birthday!
@@TheKentuckyNightmare Thanks!
This man's music has changed my life simple I love it
Alot of control,hi,and lo notes,both.i can't hit neither.gifted w writing,music too ~
One more cup of coffee is another absolute gem on this album
The love for our greatest living artist in the comments is palpable. We know he’s unmatched, right up there with Picasso and Shakespeare, easily one of the best artists of all time.
Sounds about yt
Bob is so great to listen to when you've been drinking.
Lol!!
Another gem ... Somebody told Bob he could write songs ...
Another great Dylan epic song. Violin by Scarlet Rivera!
Ya she is great , so tru
I always wondered if dylan n her mightve had a lil thing goin on..but its never been confirmed
im annonymous
I don't know, but I think they had a little fling. Judge by her eyes, how she looked at him, I would definitely say yes. But Bob had so many women around him. Everybody wanted him. If I had been on that special road trip, I had wanted him too. Tell me who wouldn't...💜☮️☸️💜
Watch Rolling Thunder Revue on Netflix...great version of this song...more info. about Scarlet Rivera too!
@@imannonymous7707 he said clearly in the film that he kept his distance, but I think he did because I would have
Amazing cruising tune.........driving out east in 1978 on the Long Island Expressway by myself in my '68 Pontiac LeMans in the middle of the summer at 2:00 AM and listening to this Dylan classic when I was a philosophy major at LIU. It all just seemed so right back then and at that time.
"Once there was a way to get back homeward -- once there was a way to get back home." McCartney
This song just keeps you wanting more. This song and Senor are my two favorites from this legend.
Commensurate story teller. Genius poet. Spokesman for the age.
Surely 'when he died I was hoping that it wasn't contagious' is one of the best lines ever?
I think i rode back to Isis just to tell her lover her is great too
"I came in from the east, with the sun in my eyes. I cursed her one time, then I rode on ahead"
Makes me teary eyed every single time. Feels like time stops when I hear it.
Good line .. I wouldn’t say it was the best
I liked, “if you want me to, yeah”…that doesn’t happen every day
One of the best line of bob is "her eyes where the moonlight swiming"
I will be listening to this on the 5th of May and on any other day of the year 💜
The Maiden i thought it was only me for this and now🙀💦 ok..- here...-🌞!
Well said
I know a girl named Isis, named after this song because she was born on the fifth day of May. They changed her name because of world events, actually uses her middle name now.
@@max61203 literally the best comment i have ever read in my entire life
Very funny but he could not hold on to her very long. LOL
Such a Wonderful tour..Caught both legs. .The Providence Show was flat out killer,Dylan wearing black leather, hat included, Ruby, s ,man you don't see that often, He just knocked me down he was so Good,
Redemption song right here.. we all got that mystical child in us.. sometimes we ditch it for an interesting character we form in our heads but we will always crave that feeling of home.. however far you get you can always make it back but you’ll have to go through a lot to leave the fake you behind. Songs amazing, best song writer of all time no contest..
I have no coment.....
YES.
I can't listen to a song without digesting the lyrics.
This one is a mouthful...
One of the greatest stories that I ever heard
That was the 1rst Dylan album I remember my mom playing. And that was the first verse I fell in love with. It's still my favorite
My favorite song by Bob Dylan
I love the piano on this song. Easy to learn and to play as well.
Special place in my heart in this song. Talk about putting your soal into a song. Pure class..
Toutaly
Love the harmonica and violin too
Desire, blood on the tracks, infidels. 3 of the best albums ever.
besides another 20 others
Desire, Blood on the Tracks and Blonde On Blonde.
Freewheeling was good.
Possibly the best of all the album's?
@justgeorgeous Just depends what one you're listening to at the time 😉
Love the violin 🎻
What a great vocal. An epic song; Egyptology meets New Testament. I was a kid in the 1960's but this was my time for discovering Dylan. How can one man write so many extraordinary songs? Someone should tell it simply isn't possible, Robin Witting
Especially since he is STILL DOING IT.
I might never be able to understand how anyone can capture thought, impressions, emotions, like this man has been able to. Just fabulous.
I like a lot of music but with Dylan it's hard to put into words what his meant to me in my teen years in the 70's. It's just .... I can't explain ....
I think this is Bob's best song
I remember back in mid '70s high school the football team getting drunk after a win at a party all breaking out into this song trying to get as far as they could into it. Freaking hilarious!
This was a tremendous album, and he had so much before it. I realized a few years ago, I don’t listen to Bob Dylan songs, I watch them. He brings you through so much detail and tells such a wonderful story in a few minutes that it’s like watching a movie.
And the classics just keep on a comin'
So unknown was a great song. Hypnotic and intense it takes u in heaven through Dylan'S genius...Wow
Dylan's vocal delivery on this song is one of the great tour de forces in all of rock music. Song reminds me of being super stoned and driving to the Huntington Library with my sister and her friend about 25 years ago.
Fuck drugs and fuck driving impaired. Song is awesome.
Happy birthday to a living LEGEND AND ICON! Isis is a great track. Bbc6 played a terrific live version of this song, from 1975, just last Sunday.
Thank You Dylan...! (Great Song!!!)
I believe it is ! I've turned 64 this April,
I've been listening to
His musical arrangemens and
Song his words since
I was 7 years old.
Yep! His best!
Best album of his. Cover is great too, sooooo "Bob".
I love this song and have never heard Bob perform it. Great comments - it's great to be in the company of so many Dylan fans!!!
Watch the audio of RUclips for the live Rolling Thunder version. Awesome. Also the footage is on the doco
I've got most of his Albums but this will always be my favourite
The writing style in this song approaches Shakespeare as many, many of his songs do.
The last verse is just so clever: he leaves you to imagine the conversation in a way that engages the listener like very few can. And those that can are not anywhere as prolific as Dylan; except maybe Neil Young
Love Dylan's song writing, they tell a story
"...we chopped through the dawn." They broke the mold with this Guy

First Bob Dylan song I ever heard. Never became a big fan but this one always had a special place for me.
Bob is singing his ass off when he hits that, “But I made up my mind that I had to go on..” 🍻
The whole album is so soothing.
I rode back to find Isis to tell her that i love her.. epic songwriting
The best singer of Bob Dylan!
Well slap my biscuits and call me Bertha this is the best thing I've ever heard 💃🎶
Thwack! You have good taste, Bertha.
