Bob Dylan and his wife Sara were estranged at the time..He wrote this song for Sara. Sara was present at the studio and listened "from the other side of the glass" as Dylan recorded the song , Dylan turned to Sara just before beginning the song, and stated, "This one's for you." This is the first take and its perfect.

Circa 1990 I was in my pajamas, sitting on an old wooden, rectangle coffee table with an old ashtray on it stuffed with butts from my mother. The night before, my parents had a pretty bad fight, glass was broken, and plates were smashed all over the floor. My father was up still with his huge speakers blaring my mother was nowhere to be found and he sat with me and we listened to this album and I've been in love since. Miss my dad and my mom, even though it wasn't the greatest those moments made it worth it.

Bob Dylan is an absolute legend, all these years later and there's still no one with his unique kind of raw talent. His success wasn't based on his looks or dance moves or the traditional idea of a "good voice" it was based on his artistic ability and his poetic way with words. All his songs are so different to everything else and somehow seem more meaningful than alot of others. His one of a kind and should never be forgotten.

Lennon and McCartney are very good but for me the only one that comes even remotely close for depth, sadness, laughter, love, feel and poetic beauty is Shane MacGowan. His catalog of songs is unparalleled by anyone in this day and age. No dancing, looking pretty or changing to suit a wider audience. A true poet that will live forever in the hearts and minds. Lyrics:
I laid on a dune, I looked at the sky,
When the children were babies and played on the beach.
You came up behind me, I saw you go by,
You were always so close and still within reach.
    Sara, Sara,
Whatever made you want to change your mind?
    Sara, Sara,
So easy to look at, so hard to define.
I can still see them playin' with their pails in the sand,
They run to the water their buckets to fill.
I can still see the shells fallin' out of their hands
As they follow each other back up the hill.
    Sara, Sara,
Sweet virgin angel, sweet love of my life,
    Sara, Sara,
    Radiant jewel, mystical wife.
Sleepin' in the woods by a fire in the night,
Drinkin' white rum in a Portugal bar,
Them playin' leapfrog and hearin' about Snow White,
You in the marketplace in Savanna-la-Mar.
    Sara, Sara,
It's all so clear, I could never forget,
    Sara, Sara,
Lovin' you is the one thing I'll never regret.
I can still hear the sounds of those Methodist bells,
I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through,
Stayin' up for days in the Chelsea Hotel,
Writin' "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for you.
    Sara, Sara,
Wherever we travel we're never apart.
    Sara, oh Sara,
Beautiful lady, so dear to my heart.
How did I meet you? I don't know.
A messenger sent me in a tropical storm.
You were there in the winter, moonlight on the snow
And on Lily Pond Lane when the weather was warm.
    Sara, oh Sara,
Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress,
    Sara, Sara,
You must forgive me my unworthiness.
Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp
And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore.
You always responded when I needed your help,
You gimme a map and a key to your door.
    Sara, oh Sara,
Glamorous nymph with an arrow and bow,
    Sara, oh Sara,
Don't ever leave me, don't ever go.

Second, get some kind of guitar tuner if you can't do it by ear (and trust me, you can't.)

  • @yassineazekri2942

I agree. It's as though Bob's letting us into his world - "that song I wrote, that everyone loves and this is another one".
I love the way it starts with him and his kids on a beach, full of life and fun and the laughter of kids, a real family setting. And then how it ends up on the same beach but now empty and devoid of all past happy domestic scene and just replaced by an old shipwreck and kelp. Just so much imagery,.
Such an evocative song. Sad and possibly angry and perhaps a little confused - he asks "why did you change?". So so relatable.

Yes, but note the minor key, they wailing harmonica and the pleadng for her not to go, which of course we all know she did about 1-1/2 years after this masterpiece was recorded. she couldn't stand his philandering, certainly understandable, and she took him for half of his considerable wealth. many of Dylan's songs, indeed, whole albums, are "sad." Time out of Mind for example, and many others. It is a very sad yet gorgeous song. thanks for commenting Elizabeth. Ihave a daughter with that name, only with an s instead of a z.

Dylan was peerless from 1962 until 1976. He has recorded some of the greatest albums of all time: The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, The Times they are A-Changin', Bringing it all Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding, Blood on the Tracks and Desire were all written in that period.
If any other artist had recorded just one of these he/she would be regarded as a colossus but Dylan recorded them all.
Even after, since his late career resurgence, we have had Time Out of Mind, Modern Times, Love and Theft and Rough and Rowdy ways. And that's not even counting during the course of his career bootlegs such as the Basement Tapes and studio outtakes such as the sublime Blind Willie McTell, Foot of Pride and Groom Still Waiting at the Altar, his stuff with The Traveling Wilbury's nor the numerous songs that he gave to others, such as Walls of Redwing, Si Tu Dois Partir and so on.
He is finishing his career right where he started it - at the very top.
