@@danielkokal8819 several commentators have shared their ideas on the depth and meaning in this song's lyrics. Michael Gray, author of The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia, commented that "Changing of the Guards" is a thorough description of Bob Dylan's personal journey, from the beginning of his musical career, about sixteen years prior (the opening line is "Sixteen years"), through his marriage to and divorce from Sara Dylan, up to his conversion to Christianity, which was announced soon after this song was released. Much religious and biblical imagery is found in this work, especially apocalyptic imagery. Bob once commented: "It means something different every time I sing it. 'Changing of the Guards' is a thousand years old'". The seemingly deliberate ambiguity of the lyrics marked Street-Legal's effective abandonment of the narrative approach that dominated Dylan's previous album Desire. "But Eden is burning! Either get ready for elimination or your hearts must have the courage for the changing of the guards." When Bob is right, he's very, very right.
"Peace will come, with tranquility and splendor on the wheels of fire, but will offer no rewards when the false idols fall, and cruel death surrenders with its pale ghost retreating between the King and the Queen of Swords." One of the greatest songs of all time, sung as only Bob can sing it!
Inspired me quite recently when I decided to make a massive life change - 'Your heart must have the courage for the changing of the guards'. I wish I could thank him personally.
As always Bob Dylan knows how to combine instruments (combo organ and sax is outstanding), the powerful and the dramatic/melancholic, musical completeness and deep, symbolic words. Speechless
I have to agree with all who say this is his most underrated album. In 1978 I was studying for my 'A' levels, the exams that would decide whether or not I got into university, when Dylan came to play six nights in London, right in the middle of my exams. I queued for 27 hours to get the maximum four tickets, took two of my exams on three hours sleep. Never regretted it.
I adore this song of which I know the lyrics by heart since I was a young adult, decades ago. The lyrics are among the best in music history, his hoarse voice, the chorus, ... I collect the 7' versions of this record, have more than 100 copies, many are doubles of course. This is how good I think it is. Greetings.

@Greg Normal How strange yet, not surprising, I read a poem that has an inspiration notation of the title of changing of the guards today and then I am asked if I am a fan Orange star fire in the distance highlights tall, blackened, trees. Define the picturesque Horizon Hints of whispers, gossiping breeze. I lean mine ear toward the quiet Glimpsing movement on watery grey. Burst orange, yellow lighthouse Glow on liquid stillness In triangular shape. Nameless birds sprinkle like glitter Up across the clouded blue. Then the sun, a ball dropped down Strewing light across the shadowy moon. Then I spy in the distance, Yet, not so far away A large bird flapping above the falling Sunlight called, “Today!”. This miracle of Flight unknown to This envious one- Vicarious onlooker and stalker sees Darkness kissing the sun. Jealous voter of nature’s display Changing of the guard’s dismay The blackened trees disintegrate Into black as yesterday. Darkness spreads her cloak like ice When the Heavens and Lake collides. And mirror man’s greatest foe- The darkness of his eternal soul. Leave no room for error Fulfilled by God , man made whole Or abandoned by Satan’s glamorous terrors. Does it profit a man to gain the world yet lose his very soul? Though darkness brings no insight to the blind and the weary She whispers a chant, “It is here you may rest It is here you may rest Come lay down your burden dreary. Rest as you might, Realize the stars burn bright. There’s room for the moon tonight. Know, Life extends beyond every man’s plight; That Dawn is nearer now Than the silent grip of midnight. I read this one and of course dedicated it to Bob Dylan When his talent comes to fruition he repeatedly touches common wonder of the human experience in all who identify with him globally. Yes. I am a fan. Sunset/Man’s Plight 11/15/13 Thank you

It is really difficult for me to not say that this is Bob’s finest piece of music. Any other musician/artist/wordsmith, this song would be their defining creation in life and their finest moment as a sentient being. Their personal “Stairway to Heaven” that stands head and shoulders above any other thing that they forged during their time on Earth…Then I remember “It’s Alright Ma” and “Don’t Think Twice, It’s Alright” and “Idiot Wind” and “Buckets of Rain” and “Lay Lady Lay” and “Visions of Johanna” and “When the Ships Come In” and “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” and holy shit I haven’t even said “Like a Rolling Stone” or “All Along the Watchtower” or “Subterranean Homesick Blues” yet. Or ______ nor _______, etc, etc, ad infinitum…..Thanks for the embarrassment of riches and for setting the bar, Bob.

Lyrics:
Sixteen years
Sixteen banners united over the field
Where the good shepherd grieves
Desperate men, desperate women divided
Spreading their wings 'neath the falling leaves
Fortune calls
I stepped forth from the shadows to the marketplace
Merchants and thieves, hungry for power, my last deal gone down
She's smelling sweet like the meadows where she was born
On midsummer's eve, near the tower
The cold-blooded moon
The captain waits above the celebration
Sending his thoughts to a beloved maid
Whose ebony face is beyond communication
The captain is down but still believing that his love will be repaid
They shaved her head
She was torn between Jupiter and Apollo
A messenger arrived with a black nightingale
I seen her on the stairs and I couldn't help but follow
Follow her down past the fountain where they lifted her veil
I stumbled to my feet
I rode past destruction in the ditches
With the stitches still mending 'neath a heart-shaped tattoo
Renegade priests and treacherous young witches
Were handing out the flowers that I'd given to you
The palace of mirrors
Where dog soldiers are reflected
The endless road and the wailing of chimes
The empty rooms where her memory is protected
Where the angels' voices whisper to the souls of previous times
She wakes him up
Forty-eight hours later, the sun is breaking
Near broken chains, mountain laurel and rolling rocks
She's begging to know what measures he now will be taking
He's pulling her down and she's clutching on to his long golden locks
Gentlemen, he said
I don't need your organization, I've shined your shoes
I've moved your mountains and marked your cards
But Eden is burning, either getting ready for elimination
Or else your hearts must have the courage for the changing of the guards
Peace will come
With tranquility and splendor on the wheels of fire
But will offer no reward when her false idols fall
And cruel death surrenders with its pale ghost retreating
Between the King and the Queen of Swords
(If you've read this far, to the end, then you realize what a Masterpiece of poetry Dylan has painted. What all it means is up to you, allegory or otherwise.)

@@TheJazz61 I also have the cassette, the minidisc, the 8-track and many copies of the album on vinyl, the 7' as well, that's how much I love this song. Greetings.
It's his best album. Period
Who cares what people think?
✌️
Brasil.
Street Legal has been called underrated for so many years now, that I no longer think it qualifies as "underrated" anymore.
For my good friend and fellow Bob Dylan fan Davy who died suddenly today 30th may 2024 on holiday 😢I will always remember you mate and never forget you 😢😢 "At peace"🙏
Sorry to hear of the passing of your friend, Davy. I’m a female and my nickname as a child was Davie. A good song to remember him by. Blessings to you and to the good memories of friends.
❤Hats off to Davy for having such a friend as you 💜💜💜
Sorry for the loss of your friend❤
Sorry for your loss....
He had fine taste in music
Made me Cry, sorry ❤
"But Eden is burning! Either get ready for elimination or your hearts must have the courage for the changing of the guards." When Bob is right, he's very, very right.
Wow you made me think of Covid. Eden is burning it eliminating the past, need courage!!!!
"Peace will come, with tranquility and splendor on the wheels of fire, but will offer no rewards when the false idols fall, and cruel death surrenders with its pale ghost retreating between the King and the Queen of Swords." One of the greatest songs of all time, sung as only Bob can sing it!

For me the B' best song!
Me too
Inspired me quite recently when I decided to make a massive life change - 'Your heart must have the courage for the changing of the guards'.
I wish I could thank him personally.

Another great from the greatest of the 20th century
As always Bob Dylan knows how to combine instruments (combo organ and sax is outstanding), the powerful and the dramatic/melancholic, musical completeness and deep, symbolic words. Speechless
The ultimate story teller sensational sound as always from a master story teller
Dylan probably wrote a full dozen of "the best fucking song ever written".
This masterpiece is one of those. It's perfect in its simplicity.
I rember playing this in my 6th form class room
Saw him 4 times in uk 👍👍👍
I was in that queue too. All night in Hanover Square.
@@44zaydin Night of the FA Cup final I seem to recall. Lots of somewhat bemused football fans wandering about.
Rock n roll ✌️
Absolutely terrific song, up there with his best. Great arrangement.
I adore this song of which I know the lyrics by heart since I was a young adult, decades ago. The lyrics are among the best in music history, his hoarse voice, the chorus, ... I collect the 7' versions of this record, have more than 100 copies, many are doubles of course. This is how good I think it is. Greetings.
My brother bought this album 40 years ago, it's what got me into Bob. Imho .. I still play Hurricane to this day
God bless you Mr. Dylan. Thank you❣️
Majestic literature..
Only bob ❤️
I've more orless grown up listening to this song
An I'm so proud to have the privilege to have this music played in my life span on earth.
Absolutely fantastic.
THANK YOU
His influence ,on the music ,is immeasurable .Not just in 60's and 70's 80's and 90's . Even today .He IS a genuine American legend . Not just in u.s.a ,but around the world
And so say all of us dear friend !!!!
Dylan is god
Very special phenomenon for 60s and 70s. Unique lyrics and huge cultural importance. But an annoying and complex person. Cannot take away his greatness from him though. Not that I am trying to.
Dylan inspired the Beatles. That’s pretty much all that needs to be said.
You better believe it,,!!!! I'm from Peru....
This album is so underrated, definitely my favorite of him

"I've worked with a couple of the greats...but Dylan takes the cake."- G.Harrison 🌹
You were one of the lucky ones in more ways than you ....all the greatest you had the privilege to work with ....not to mention ...they had the privilege to work with you ....another one of the GREATEST
I would have GIVEN you my girlfriend just for the opportunity to hang around in your shadow
I hope you know I'm talking to George...not you Jeff
He deserves it!
Yes!!@@GrantAnderson-p6v
one of Dylan's best tracks , simply the best .

I will always feel young whenever I hear this song! My sweet husband I have 37 years I’ve danced to Bob Dylan by night by day by the blood red moon. We’re going strong clutching his long platinum locks. Thank you, Bob Dylan! Truly I am glad to be in the group who celebrates the one of the kind Never ending fan!
@Greg Normal How strange yet, not surprising, I read a poem that has an inspiration notation of the title of changing of the guards today and then I am asked if I am a fan
Orange star fire in the distance highlights tall, blackened, trees. Define the picturesque Horizon Hints of whispers, gossiping breeze.
I lean mine ear toward the quiet
Glimpsing movement on watery grey.
Burst orange, yellow lighthouse
Glow on liquid stillness
In triangular shape.
Nameless birds sprinkle like glitter
Up across the clouded blue.
Then the sun, a ball dropped down
Strewing light across the shadowy moon.
Then I spy in the distance,
Yet, not so far away
A large bird flapping above the falling
Sunlight called, “Today!”.
This miracle of Flight unknown to
This envious one-
Vicarious onlooker and stalker sees
Darkness kissing the sun.
Jealous voter of nature’s display
Changing of the guard’s dismay
The blackened trees disintegrate
Into black as yesterday.
Darkness spreads her cloak like ice
When the Heavens and Lake collides.
And mirror man’s greatest foe-
The darkness of his eternal soul.
Leave no room for error
Fulfilled by God , man made whole
Or abandoned by Satan’s glamorous terrors. Does it profit a man to gain the world yet lose his very soul?
Though darkness brings no insight to the blind and the weary
She whispers a chant,
“It is here you may rest
It is here you may rest
Come lay down your burden dreary.
Rest as you might,
Realize the stars burn bright.
There’s room for the moon tonight.
Know, Life extends beyond every man’s plight;
That Dawn is nearer now
Than the silent grip of midnight.
I read this one and of course dedicated it to Bob Dylan
When his talent comes to fruition he repeatedly touches common wonder of the human experience in all who identify with him globally. Yes. I am a fan.

Possibly my favourite song ever. I love this absolutely amazing 👏
¡Gracias Bob!
Still just : "Waoh " What a difference to todys lyrics in songs
Do not compare jewelry with trash!!!
Bob Dylan: the unlikely child of Willam Shakespeare and Johann Sebastian Bach.
that opening line SIXTEEN YEARS so simple and yet so powerful, even now after all these years I keep finding stuff in this song, a masterpiece
Reminds me of four score and twenty years ago
I meant seven years ago
underrated song
yeah it does hit hard
"Guards" was released sixteen years after his first album
Poet Maybe??
I’m 53 today sat with my sons listening to it , my 100000th time they’re first so beautiful
whenever I hear this song I don't know if I should be partying or crying
Adoro essa música do Bob! Adoro o Bob!
One thing I love about Dylan is the undertones of rebelliousness. His music just speaks to my soul in a way no other artist could.
Yes, he speaks universally like no other.
@fredlibby8518 folks, try "Van Morrison" Dylan's closest pal, named Van the Man!!!
Genius
Not rebellious a discipel of truth. He can not help himself. He must do it. A true member of the priesthood.
Album wise Blood on the Tracks would be my choice but this is one of my favorite Dylan songs hands down
+Jewfro DZ Ak: Pretty fine post there, Jewfro. You be givin' everybody a little peek of the wordsmith you just may be, eh bro? Takes one to know one. Well done, brother. God Bless us all....from jbeinarizona

my personal favorite, hard thing to say, would be Hurricane. A song that helped free a man from prison. What a talent he is. ❤
"Sweet heart like you."
" Ballad of a thin man"
This song is awesome with a particolar liric never heard before. A true masterpiece!
How many have been moved by this Genius? He Inspired a generation to open their minds. Thank you Bob Dylan

Grande Dylan, marcou muito a minha juventude
Esta é das melhores.
Marcou a minha juventude também
Lyrics remind me of a Stephen King novel. Or probably the other way round -- King's writing reminds of Dylan lyrics. The singers and the band and tune are hypnotic.
Thank You.
