Lyrics:
You may be an ambassador to England or France
You may like to gamble, you might like to dance
You may be the heavyweight champion of the world
You may be a socialite with a long string of pearls
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
Indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You might be a rock 'n' roll addict prancing on the stage
You might have drugs at your command, women in a cage
You may be a business man or some high-degree thief
They may call you doctor or they may call you chief
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes you are
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a state trooper, you might be a young Turk
You may be the head of some big TV network
You may be rich or poor, you may be blind or lame
You may be living in another country under another name
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes you are
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a construction worker working on a home
You may be living in a mansion or you might live in a dome
You might own guns and you might even own tanks
You might be somebody's landlord, you might even own banks
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may be a preacher with your spiritual pride
You may be a city councilman taking bribes on the side
You may be workin' in a barbershop, you may know how to cut hair
You may be somebody's mistress, may be somebody's heir
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
Might like to wear cotton, might like to wear silk
Might like to drink whiskey, might like to drink milk
You might like to eat caviar, you might like to eat bread
You may be sleeping on the floor, sleeping in a king-sized bed
But you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
Indeed you're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody
You may call me Terry, you may call me Timmy
You may call me Bobby, you may call me Zimmy
You may call me R.J., you may call me Ray
You may call me anything but no matter what you say
Still, you're gonna have to serve somebody, yes
You're gonna have to serve somebody
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord
But you're gonna have to serve somebody

I'm in total agreement with you Bill Ruffin I'm a 77 year old black woman. Music is what keeps me going . When I was younger I was a gospel singer in CHURCH . I love Good music.......
Hello Dear, it’s nice meeting you on here
I'm a 72 year old white woman and if it weren't for music I would have taken my life a long time ago. Special thanks to Christian pianist Michael Smith ❤
God bless. Everything we receive here on earth is a gift. Form a relationship with the man upstairs, and all of your weight is lifted. Best wishes and stay blessed.
I am a 56 year old Black man. This song is one of the BEST lyrics I've EVER heard. This song has a perfect combination of R&B, Rock 'n Roll, Country, Jazz, and easy listening groove and soul. Magnificent song.🤗🤗🤗🤗
W ELCOME BILLY , TO THE WORLD OF BOB DYLAN A VERY SPECIAL SINGER SONG WRITER, PURE TALENT.
With you brother, might live in a mansion or might ive in a dome :P
Billy - Agreed!
Great song Billy.
get the 30th anniversary and hear Ritchie Havens do Just Like a Woman,, one of the best i've heard
I never liked this song till I got older. Now I see the reality of this everywhere. Can't deny it.
Good comment.
Been listening to Dylan since 1965, the most original artist of all time.
This song and the whole album strengthened my faith. Jesus Christ is Lord.
And mine for many years x
I recall watching Saturday Night Live and Dylan singing this song…it blew my mind; I remember people didn’t like that he became a born again Christian…..but that’s their problem……I serve the LORD, praise Jesus !!! ✝️
Bob Dylan, you are correct! Matthew 6:24
Amen
Was 16 when this came out and my older sister gave it to me on vinyl for that birthday . That combination of Knopfler and the organ with Dylan’s lyrics captivated me and was a catalyst in my journey which to this day , 32 years of marriage and four children later embraces serving Him. Dylan can never know how pivotal his art has been in my walk.
I may not be forever young but I am forever grateful !
Well said my friend
I guess this is the point of Art Critics, so the simple don't miss the point
Understandably so.
I serve my fellow humans.
Joy is found in usefulness!
Amen💙
Amen💙
I remember mom playing this when I was a child. As a child I thought well I'll serve the Lord, and that's what I'm going to continue to do 🙏
Me too
And me and my house even so come lord jesus
I think the point of the song is that our society is set up to wear your always serving somebody even if you don’t want to an the goal is to get to a point to where you don’t need to serve anyone just yourself and your loved ones
@@cameroncandelaria9688 Not the point. The song says, definitely you will serve One or the other. Says nada about serving yourself.
@@tombrown4467 god your small minded prolly why your going to be stuck serving somone else ur whole life😂🤓
This is a testament to the Lord and to the fact that Bob Dylan is one of the greatest song writers of all time.
I'm 71, have been a fan since the age of 14 and what a trip it's been. Thank God for Bob!
Me too
Yes indeed your gonna have to serve someone i thank Bob Dylan for reminding me I get caught up in everyday life like Bob said Your Gonna Have Too Serve Somebody I choose the Lord I've always then now forever!! Jesus saves trust and believe🎶🎵🎶✨✨✨✨✨
When I was a young boy my father told me to listen closely to the lyrics of this song because they had meaning. This tune will always be a favorite and yes the words ring true. Myself, I choose to serve the Lord in Heaven.🙏🏼 Thanks Dad!
True enough
Mary M7 how do you know this?
Armentum I’ve seen that before and it’s cryptic. Remember Bob Dylan was saved over thirty years ago with several albums dedicated lyrically to God.
HAPPY DAYS 🙏🚂♥
@@marianm7468 I've heard similar things and I've had my own suspicions about Bobby Zimmerman as well. One of my favorite sayings, " Even a broken clock is correct twice each day. " may be applicable here. Though he may be aligned with the fallen one, the overall wisdom in his poetry is present. " It may be the devil or it may be the LORD .... ya gotta serve somebody. " If his choice is indeed the adversary , his wisdom ends with the poetry, in my opinion. My service is to our Heavenly Father , the All Mighty Creator. Have a good evening and a Blessed tomorrow, Marian . Thanks for your insightful comment.
I went to bed one night with the thought that I needed to get right with the Lord & become a man of faith. I woke up in the morning hearing this song on my radio alarm clock. Slow train had just been released & I thought that if Bob Dylan can humble himself before God then so can I!
leonardoboy2 me too. I had just gotten born again and Dylan came out with this album. I thought, “wow, I’m in synch with the times. “
Purple Sage Blessings that’s awesome to hear. At that time my experience with local churches & Christian book shops in terms of Bob Dylan’s 3 gospel/Christian albums was disappointing. They didn’t & wouldn’t stock these albums & fellow believers were critical of & judgemental about his testimony & his confession of faith. Additionally, many of his fans were enraged at the same time. Interesting to note that Jesus had the both the establishment & the worldly against Him also. I’d say this is when we know that we’re dealing with a true & genuine work of God when these things come against it!
@@purplesageblessings6393 GREAT TESTIMONY....
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING THIS TESTIMONY...
Beautiful story Leonard. I was 19 at the time when it came out. His lyrics were so uncompromising and a great inspiration as a young Christian. Be blessed. Are you still pressin on?
The entire album is fantastic.

Got to know about this song when I was from doing my quiet time: "You're gonna serve somebody "

Jesus, I LOVE how he sings this one! Believe it or not, I haven't heard it before. I have a lot of catching up to do.
This might be his very best ever!
I am 65yrs. old and bought Brave by Nicole Nordeman when it first came out. My niece turned me on to it. I love this song. I love Bob Dylan and have been listening to his music since I was a teenager. The fact that he wrote this simply BLOWS me mind. As for me and my house, we have and always will serve the Lord. What a mighty God we serve! Thank you Jesus. My mom passed away this morning. She was 93yrs. It's because of her that I became a Christian! She is Home. I can't wait to see her again one day!! GREAT SONG.
She is free and above the fray .As my dear family is. Be strong.
Thank you, Elizabeth
Bob Dylan knows life in a spiritual way . we are truly servants but the best servant is the one who worships his creator not the one who was created
perhaps
This song does have religious undertones but it is not a religious song. Bob Dylan was not a religious man
That's the Truth just a few can understand! You can serve the Creator or the one who has been created. 🙏💙🙏
if you worship your creator does that not imply you were created ? i guess it's some reference to the another imaginary character in that fiction .
Happy Birthday, Bob Dylan! I grew up 20 mes from Hibbing,
Minnesota. Loved your music! I got saved and was excited when you came out with your Christian Album... Especially this song:
🎶"You're gonna serve somebody, Yes, you are, You're gonna serve somebody.
Well, it may be the devil or it may be the Lord!🎶 Sure pray you are serving the Lord Jesus Christ!🙏❤
He’s no Christian….smh. He’s about as Christian as Alice cooper because cooper isn’t Christian either no matter what he says. Know them by their fruits
To God be the glory ❤❤❤
I absolutely love this song!
Great song by Bob Dylan. This is one song that doesn't usually get played on the classic rock stations but it deserves to be played on those stations.
It was playing on a classic rock station when Tony Soprano was listening. Totally got me into Dylan and I never looked back.
Not surprised, there is wisdom in this track, if I were me, I know who I am serving, The Lord, Jesus Christ!
One of the most relevant songs ever produced. He really changed and influenced so many that followed him. Great to listen to occasionally to realize how inconsequential we really are.
@jerryhow. We are all just blades of grass as humans. Some of us with more glory than others but no less important.
My pastor talked about this song in his message this morning...it is a great song. Very true....we are all serving somebody.
That’s ironic..
Yes sir !
Im 56 years old and just happen to hear this tune on the local radio station, last week! Didn't know this was Bob Dylan until I came home and looked it up on U -Tube! Wow!!! Been playing this great tune since
One of my favorite sayings all my life was you can’t be in good with God and the Devil you gotta choose! A young friend of mine at work said to me “ Bob Dylan wrote a song about that, so that’s how I discovered this beautiful song. I have the record and I listen to it in my car. I’ve always thought that music is the best way that God has to communicate with us.
This is the best vocals Dylan has ever done.
This song is so prevalent today. The lyrics are so appropriate. It stands the test of time in every aspect.
yeah man, when ya think ya got it all figured out along comes lucky with another thang that might make ya sway
A classic example of the songwriting prowess of Bob Dylan. He is "The Poet", His given nickname, but for me its his lyrics that cut through the noise like a razor sharp double edged sword. His understanding of songwriting goes way beyond the higher levels of the craft. He understands the human condition so well, his words are like missiles aimed right at the heart of it. Definitely a must listen for anyone interested in the craft of songwriting. Cheers...!
He's adaptable too.
Zackly. And well put.
Anybody who doesn't 'get' what's great about Dylan, never heard this song on good headphones.
I bought the album in high school.
he sould his soul to satan.

Some people don't serve anybody but themselves! Need to hear this song and be reminded!

Is Dylan a deciple of our Lord ? Absolutely a stunning writer with insight
Mark Knopfler being a genius as usual.
Is he on guitar? Or is this his song originally?
I'm confused.
Huge fan of Mark BTW
@@TheJustin574 Yes he is, he's quite low in the mix, but you can hear his distinctive playing if you listen carefully. He's on the rest of the album, and also plays with Bob on the album 'Infidels'

Where precisely is Jesus in this song? If Dylan wanted to praise Jesus he would have mentioned his name. He didn't. Its a great song and one of his best please don't demean the poet that wrote it. The words are quite CLEAR. Dylan mentions The Lord and the Devil and Timmy, Bobby, Zimmy, R.J. and Ray. Never mentioned Jesus once. . . and why would he?
@@marcushale678
Dylan doesn't want to lose his fanbase that hasn't found their way YET. So he intelligently leads them towards the light without them even knowing it. He speaks of Jesus throughout all of his music leading up to his newest releases...if you don't hear it then that is on you my brother...
