@@antoinemantoux6049 It's a sure thing that after 2008 all the courts did slow down. The French has of course always been slow. But the other three majors have become much slower in the last decade, encouraging baseline attrition rather than quick points.
Yeah, and Murray reached no.2 for the first time in 2009. Took him 7 years to reached no.1. And it seemed that Nadal was taking too long, from 2005 to 2008.
I love that about Rafa. It's weird, I'm a Federer fan through and through, but imo you just can't help but like Nadal at least a little bit and it's because of little things like at 10:40. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but he always steps aside and lets his opponent shake hands with the chair umpire first. It's just a small gentlemanly act that goes unnoticed, but it's things like that that make him so likable. Whether he wins or loses, that's how he acts.
The first semi-final, Djokovic-Federer was being played in Ashe and this match was supposed to follow it, but they knew rain was coming so they decided to move Nadal-Murray to Armstrong to try to get it in before the rain, but it still got interrupted and they finished it the next day in Ashe.
Yes, it changes....they started playing in the Armstrong stadium but it had to be delayed due to rain until next day....where they played in the Arthur Ashe stadium...which is btw the biggest tennis stadium on earth.
Federer and Djokovic were playing the other semifinal on Arthur Ashe but the forecast called for rain so the tournament officials decided to start Murray-Nadal a.s.a.p. instead of waiting for the other semi to end so that they could hopefully get the match in before the rain. Unfortunately, the rain still interrupted the match, but that's why.
hmm yh i guess you're right about rafa during that period :) still stick by my comments on the h2h being skewed due to nadal not reaching hard court slam finals during federers peak years. even in 2009 federer gave nadal a great game but rafa was the fitter of the two when the 5th set came around and i think federer was and has been past his best for a long time but it is testament to his talent that he can still compete with the younger players at the highest level.
seemed like a nice hand shake and good talks at the end, out of all the big four match ups this is probably the least talked about, its all about the fed/nadal and novak/andy
Also think rafa's rise on grass and hard courts coincided with the slowing down of the surfaces (hard court slams less so), and conversely this affected federer in a negative fashion. it sounds like im a nadal hater and typical federer fanboy lol... becasue i am!! ahaha
Only the final set, because it was the next day. The first day (and first 3 sets) were on Armstrong. I don't remember why the match was broken up over 2 days, possibly rain.
Not a fan of excuses, but 2008 was tough for Nadal having won so many masters 1000, RG and Wimbledon back to back, then the olympics and finally the davis cup. He even skipped the world tour finals. It was one hell of a year, I tell you. However, Murray really played ouf of his normal abilities and deserved the final. Too bad he played terrible vs Federer.
NLLeFa wow masters 1000, RG and Wimbledon. He did it in 2010 and won the US Open and made the ATP Finals final. Yes of course there were no olympics in 2010 but he played fine in this match.
Murray was actually more creative and confusing to play against while younger. For some reason he narrowed his style down to what it later became. If he kept this all around mix it up style, he still could have troubled the other 3, also he probably wouldn't have put all that strain on his body from the grinder/ defend/ counter style he reduced his play to.
they were scheduled to play in centre court but federer and djokovic were playing there and their match started late. so after a while they were afraid that murray nadalcould not play that day unless they already start on another court. the us open has always been a clown slam when it comes to scheduling
@TheFedererNadallover He's a tactician, the way Murray reads and understands the game is so clever. I believe he knows when to be passive and aggressive, he cannot be aggressive 100% of the time, its just not his style or the way he would win matches.
i highly doubt that because federer was in great form. One of the factors that slightly skews the nadal-federer h2h is that whilst federer was reaching every roland garros final (during his prime) nadal being the better clay court player would beat him, however between 2005-2008 nadal was unable to reach the hard court grand slam finals and had he done that i'm pretty sure a federer in his prime and on the faster courts would have easily beaten him and thus slightly equalised the grand slam h2h
@TheFedererNadallover Well he's beaten Nadal to reach slam finals, he's won matches from two sets down or 5-2 down in the fifth, he's won many other finals before and beaten all the top guys. I'd call that pretty big matches.
All you heard haha. Nadal doesn't make a sound until 01:46! Your 'argument' has been disproved. Anyway great that you pick and choose one point as opposed to actually responding to what I've said.
Roger in his prime, is great.. no doubt about that.. but at that time Nadal was in his head ! He thrashed Federer in the French open and beat him again at Wimbledon in that epic final !! Roger would have definitely faltered against Nadal at US open as well !! the great example was, the next tourney they met each other was at AUS open 2009 final.. and Nadal won it in 5 sets... We all know how Roger was in that final !! Rafa was in Roger's head during that period !! That's why I said like that :-)
Andy is the most talented player of his gen by far, that's why i love watching him. A shame he just doesn't play this agressive tennis as much as he sould, because when he's fine is just amazing. Not only the most talented above Nole, Nadal, Del Potro etc., no doubt he's the best touch and variety of shots behind RF........
If Nadal had qualified for the final... he would have beaten Federer... US open is the only tournament that Nadal and Federer haven't faced each other !
Murray is a complete player and now he's competitive on clay too. But he suffers too much the competition with top 3, who are the best 3 seeded all time... However I'm confident he'll can win some slams in case of rafa ole's drop...
i dont understand, murray looks about ten times better here than now?! Why doesn't he go to the net more often and assert his aggression against the big guns now? His body language and general mood seemed positive unlike now. PLEASE MURRAY WIN A GRAND SLAM!
Andy Murray was always aggressive until around 2013 after his 2nd Grand Slam, when he had his back operation and he never became as aggressive after that until the end of 2016.
I miss this Murray. I know he won the USO and all, but still, I'd be much more inclined to really be a close fan of his if he'd just play like this all the time instead of being a human wall like Nadal and Djokovic.
@foul01 They are both good friends. They practice together sometimes.Andy's game matches up well against Rafa's. Rafa's cross FH high to Andys BH is perfect for andy. His weakness is the shortness of his cross forehand sometimes. But this insnt an issue against rafa on his BH. the short forehand works against rafa. I love watching thier matches.

The last two years he has focused so much on winning slams, especially Wimbledon, that he lost concentration for other tournaments like Masters 1000. Murray used to win 2 masters a year from 2008 till 2011. Since 2012 he has only won one. That is why he is so low in the rankings, even do he won Wimbledon. Alejandro del Valle You're right, and he admitted himself that he hasn't played well enough at the non-Slam events, so hopefully in the near future that's something we'll be seeing him amend.
@foul01 agree totally. When Murray is at the top of his game on hard courts he can beat Nadal consistently on hard courts. Clay is another story. He just does not feel comfortable on that surface and has lost to pretty much anyone. Today's grass plays slower than hard courts and hence nadal has dominated. In the old Wimby surface where Sampras started playing and where Edberg and Becker had their battles Nadal would have never beaten any hard hitter or server.
one of the very very best of andy murray in this match i dont understand why he doesn't play an agressive tennis right now he will be more effective if he plays like that more often !! GO 2015 AO andy!

@dwilliams02 Yeah, I'm a Federer fan, too, but Nadal is just too damn likable to hate on. I hope to see the next six grand slam finals being contested by Fedal again!
Interesting to see how Nadal's game has changed from 2008 on Hardcourts , especially from the forehand side , going to his forehand twise nowadays is a suicidal mission , his inside out forehand has developed greatly and his down the line forehand that's one of his main weapons today was practically none existent back in those years ...
He played great in the Olympics and the Australian Open just a few lmonths after ithe 2008-2009 period , but I think his best period on hardcourts was the 2013 summer hardcourt , he was basically destroying everyone there , he was playing closer to the baseline and his groundstrokes never looked better on the surface .
@hieutiee I am not talking back then. I am talking playing NOW in the surface of the old days and with the old balls. They made the grass slower and the balls heavier to try to extend the points. In the old surface and with the faster ball, any of today's big servers and good volleyrs would blow Nadal off the court. A Karlovic, Llodra, Isner, Petszchner, Feliciano, let alone Federer would have an easy time with the low and erratic bounce of the ball.
No what I see is past history. A record can change with time, players change with time, the game itself changes with time. Federer isn't much older than Murray but enough to suggest father time has called his son home. Fact is this, Federer had a winning record against Murray at the time of this match and arguably the game still rewarded attacking tennis. Federer has amazing variety. That's why he's won so many slams. Nadal has just one plan by comparison. Federer posed many problems to Murray.
Lesson: "How to bully Nadal's forehand with a backhand"
Requirements: be Djokovic or 2008 Murray
watch Murray vs Nadal- Tokyo 2011 final...simillar to this..
except backhand did most of it there. enjoy
Nalbandian 2007.
That and the match against Ferrer in that Tokyo tourny, I still say the highest level of tennis I've ever seen from murray
+Ryo Hitori A 5 sets match with Nadal leading 3-1 the 5th, is not "bully".
Marcos Villavicencio lol nadal lost so bad
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that if Murray played like this for his whole career, he would won at least doubled his current slam tally.
For sure.
GTS what do u mean courts got slower wtf
@@antoinemantoux6049 It's a sure thing that after 2008 all the courts did slow down. The French has of course always been slow. But the other three majors have become much slower in the last decade, encouraging baseline attrition rather than quick points.

Nadal just underperformed as he was really tired after a long season.
Best version of Murray by far. You can see the talent and power he can produce...miss this Andy
Holy shit I never new Murray use to play this aggressive when he was young.
nah he was just enjoying a good match up. murray was more passive back then than he is today (except for this match). but his fh & bh were more fluent
Nadal reached no.1 in that year (2008), Murray reached no.1 in 2016.
Yeah, and Murray reached no.2 for the first time in 2009. Took him 7 years to reached no.1. And it seemed that Nadal was taking too long, from 2005 to 2008.

Nadal was injuried in Aust 2010, but you are correct on this is the only grandslam match Murray dominated against Nadal.
wow, Andy Murray used to be so offensive!
tsangpogorge He's like that against very defensive players.
he always plays aggressively against Nadal tbh.
I love both of these players. Nadal is completely graceful at the end, no excuses, nothing but respect for Murray's unbelievable play.
I wonder how many grand slams he would have today if he had beaten Federer in the final

More than 4...If Murray if you had won the match in 2008 it would have psychologically changed everything

Great tactics from Murray with serve and volley and offensive tennis. He has such a nice volley wonder why he doesn't go to the net more often.
I'm not a Murray fan, but if he would start playing this consistently it wouldn't take me long to convert.
murray pls back to this king of play, very offensive, i like that
Nadal without steroids = Ordinary player anyone can beat.

the serve and volley for andy was really effective during this match, I think he should do this more often.
First real time we saw Murray had the potential to win a Major. Amazing it took him another 4 years.
Hope Muzza plays like this against Roger in today's final, and not too defensive.
Wow; what a great example of how great an all-courter Murray can be. Big booming ground strokes combined with suffocating net play.

Cus this was on a hard court! Nadal is a clay court specialist it's a bonus that he won on other courts as well.
Definitely not the most talented, but definitely the second best variety and maybe the best returner.
