Murray is a very underrated player. He may not have nearly the amount of titles and slams as the big 3, but his skill level was on par with them and at his best he could go toe to toe outside of Nadal on clay and peak Federer on grass. His mentality and unwillingness to be aggressive cost him many winnable matches against the big 3--Wimby 2010 and 2011, AO 2012, 2013 and 2015, etc. He would likely be viewed as an all-time great in any other era.

I remember this match well - I actually had a bet before the match that Murray would win. In those days, Rafa was vulnerable on the fast hard courts of the US Open and could be too passive. Murray seemed much more comfortable on that pace of court. It's interesting to observe how their games have grown over the years since this match, and how much both of them have beefed up physically!

Wouldn't say he necessarily step up. Murray was always a better hardcourt/grass player than Rafa. He moves better and hits flatter than Rafa as well as serving better. On defending as well even though they both defend extremely well Muzz turns defence into offence better on harder courts than Rafa. So although Rafa is a better champion I still think Andy has a better game across all courts than Rafa. What Rafa has way more than Murray is resolve and never die attitude so he beats a hell lot of players by sheer will and refusal to lose whatever the score. Murray can get down on himself whenever things aren't going well for him particularly against the top top players. In my opinion that is the difference. I also think he has a better game than Novak. Novak mental strength a lot better than Murray's. I am a Rafa fan.

Murray had to rob the fans of a Federer vs. Nadal US Open final, which is annoying because they have never played against each other in the US Open. Del Potro did the same in 2009 too when he beat Nadal in the US Open semi-finals but the difference is that del Potro beat Federer in the final of the US Open 2009 while Federer destroyed Murray in the final of the US Open 2008.
TheNewGuy I feel they are much better. I don’t care about their physical peak. I care about their game. People always bring up physical peak or prime, but all of that is irrelevant. When they were at their primes, they didn’t quite have the shots they have now. Rafa and Murray can hit big shots with a little more ease now, and hits bigger than back then. They have better feel. At the same time their bodies back then probably would not have allowed them to hit the way they hit now.

They had ridiculous storms coming so they decided to play each semi on separate courts fed finished but Murray and Nadal had to wait till the Sunday to finish. You’ll notice they’re on ash in the middle of the third set

And since they knew the only chance they'd have to get both SF in and have the tournament finish on time was to have both SF matches played on different courts simultaneously. TheNewGuy I feel they are much better. I don’t care about their physical peak. I care about their game. People always bring up physical peak or prime, but all of that is irrelevant. When they were at their primes, they didn’t quite have the shots they have now. Rafa and Murray can hit big shots with a little more ease now, and hits bigger than back then. They have better feel. At the same time their bodies back then probably would not have allowed them to hit the way they hit now.
@@JiraiyaSama86 Physical prime is really important for them. They cant run as many balls down, they cant position properly (more errors), they cant support the playstyles they had. I think 2010-2013 Rafa would have eaten 2019 Rafa for breakfast.
I don’t think anyone can argue Murray is better right now. But Murray was much more aggressive back then compared to him from 2011-2017. I hope he plays more like that now to account for his lack of movement

No. Rafa was clearly exhausted after a long season since day 1 that included 4 hour match vs Moya, then AO, IW, Miami, Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Rome, Hamburg, Roland Garros, Queens, Wimbledon, Toronto, Cincinnati and Rogers Cup. Then he had Olympics. In all of these tournaments, he either won, or reached at least the SF. Shows the amount of work. He got no time to rest. He was absolutely exhausted. Else Murray would have been thrashed.

They had ridiculous storms coming so they decided to play each semi on separate courts fed finished but Murray and Nadal had to wait till the Sunday to finish. You’ll notice they’re on ash in the middle of the third set
They were trying to beat the rain that was forecasted. And since they knew the only chance they'd have to get both SF in and have the tournament finish on time was to have both SF matches played on different courts simultaneously. Though it ultimately failed as this match started later than the other one, and the rain came and stopped play. And so they moved it to Ashe to finish the match the next day.
