- The good doctor is chopping up comics to make a one-of-a-kind hard cover collected edition of the Cheap Keys Checklist. In part 1 of this series, Damian Starr talks about what tools and materials you'll need to do it yourself. He also shows how to prep books for the process.

If I was interested in making an omnibus with the tpb's that I have instead of floppies, would all the same techniques and everything still work??
Great, video btw!
The process would be very different, but it can be done. Unfortunately I do not have experience doing that myself, so I wouldn't want to speculate about the details. One thing worthy of mention is that if you were to punch holes in the tpb and sew them together you would end up with a large amount of "gutter loss" (reduction on the viewable portion of the pages), so simply gluing the tpb together would probably be the way to go. I would also think that you would want to remove the covers for this, as the rigid cover material would cause the book to try to open to the beginning of the next volume, or end of the previous volume while you are reading. Sorry I can't provide more concise advice on this topic.
I have a set of trades I am willing to try with. Might be a bit before i can make a video though. Gotta order supplies and find time

this way we can have a "Spiderman 2099 Omnibus" at last :)
Okay Im hooked! cant wait to see the next vid!
awesome, episode 2 will be posted one week from today. Glad you enjoyed it.
Omg, this is brilliant
I understand if your just doing this becuase you like diy, but there are companies that do this. The book will have a professional look ,you can even design a graphic cover.
Those companies charge around $30-40 a book and usually require a book minimum.
Also you pay to ship the books out, and to get them back. And it could take months or longer.
For certain stories that aren’t particularly valuable other then to yourself, it’s better to DIY. You can always take apart and redo it :)
Using the awl with cardboard underneath helps get it though the books easier without poking yourself
Thankyou for these videos is it possible to bind mini series (3/4 issues? ) the ones I have are imprint ones that are longer than standard issues (supergirl being super, last knight on earth and the last family of krypton)
it is certainly possible, but being that thin will leave very little spine to work with as far a dust jacket goes.
I'm trying to make one of hellshock which is only 8 issues long, would it be harder since it's so short? Or is the process the same
process is the same but you may want to skip the spine board
Where can I find this Cheap Keys Checklist, out of curiosity?
The list is available in the Facebook group Make Comic Book Collecting Fun Again facebook.com/groups/makecomicbookcollectingfunagain/
One thing with volumes is that it's only the main title and don't include tie-ins.
"Mah... The meatloaf"... good content though.
why would you make custom book with random comic issues from different companies? That makes no sense and its just random stories into one
The beauty of custom binding is that one can curate the contents. I have my reason for why I collected these ones, but it’s a longer story than I care to tell.
What size chip board did you use? Whats the thickness?
I will need to double check, but lately i have been gluing 2 pieces together to double down on thickness.
@@dr.omnibus8917 i got a 22pt but thats too thin and flimsy. Even gluing 2 together. When i look at HCs i own they are pretty thick compared
I cant find a great answer and no longer have the package, but a single sheet is 1.5 millimeters
I don't know about anyone else, but it would be a big help to me if you could do one of these series about trade paperbacks.
I’ll poke around and see what i have that i might want bound.
I found a set to experiment with. I’ll try to get it done this week or next
Thank you. That would be great.
Keep an eye out for my new 52 justice league vol 1-4 tpb custom bind video, coming soon
