Superb content! As a lapsed guitarist re-entering , I remember these kind of terms like 'edge of breakup' from guitar magazines. Back then no one bothered to define them unless you knew someone! Thank you RUclips and Budda for asking the right kind of questions and then answering them for us!

You can think of "edge of breakup" as a threshold. Humans love thresholds, that nebulous point of transition. Sunrise/sunset and the start of relationships are other examples.
In terms of amp or pedal distortion, it allows the player a huge range of expression depending on how hard they play.

I use my amp ( fender tonemaster dr ) as clean pedalplatform and use my ehx soulfood overdrive for that edge of break up sound and an clean boost for the solo's , works fine for me this way , it in fact makes the amp an 3 channel amp .

I like to crank the gain on the amp and turn down the volume on the guitar.
