I wear the 5 button vest with a necktie and the 3 button vest with a bowtie. I believe worn in such a pairing it looks much better.

if you don't want to wear a 3 button vest, simply take an Argyll jacket; PC with 5 button vest looks terrible

The only 5 button waistcoats that I have are not for use with my Highland wear but are Regimental, for use with normal suits or a blazer. I agree with the opinion that a 3 button with a PC because the PC also has 3 buttons, so they match so well.

I was having just this discussion the other day. I bought a PC & vest off ebay (£16 and in perfect condition), jacket fits perfectly but the vest is too small. I already have a 5 button vest with my Argyle so tried them together and it looks great. However, I'll probably either buy another 5 button in a "short" fit or get a new 3 button. Not sure yet.

How often do you guys wear the same tartan? I can't imagine that happens much

My problem is that the five but vest hides the details of the PC jacket. I think if the vest was a different color from the jacket, one at complemented it, it would be better.

I see what Rocky is saying, don't wear the belt, and possibly have a higher rise on the kilt itself

I personally prefer the 5 button vest and did it with the PC jacket. It looked great and I think it will last. In 20 years I see 3 button vs 5 button being standard options other than “well normally 3 button is the correct way.” Time will tell though.

Whatever you’re comfortable with. Too much highland wear snobbery, although people do go over the top and sometimes look ridiculous. Thinking of normal suit type jacket and Rayon kilts!!

I prefer the look of a 5 button vest with a PC, but agree with Rocky in that I'd get a shorter cut one to match the jacket.

I like the 5 button look primarily because I can’t tie a bow tie

A pox on the cheap hire places who show PCs with 5-button vests and thus make people think it is even vaguely acceptable! A pox on them, I say.
